This isn’t something we get asked often…

But if I did ask you, what would your answer be?

What do you want to be known for? What impact do you want to have? How do you want your time on this šŸŒ be remembered?

Here’s some of the answers I got, when I asked the same question to some of the people I trust, respect and feel most inspired by.

Notice anything about the answers?

Rely on this and you’ll fall short everytime.

We don’t start anything full of motivation; because we haven’t seen any results at the start. Things feel hard, tiring, boring or like you’re up against the šŸŒŽ

You say you feel motivated, ready to go, ready to change, all fired up. You go out all guns blazing. All or nothing. Because in that moment everything seems to align and the timing feels spot on.

But what about the times when things don’t feel šŸ’Æ ? You’re tired, overwhelmed, stressed, other priorities, other things to focus on, not seeing the results? That motivation vanishes and a sudden fluctuation sees us feeling lethargic, resistant and really uninspired to stick at what we’ve been doing.

Motivation is such a fluctuating, unreliable state to rely on. Some days it’s there, others it vanishes. But in order to stay overall consistent, we can’t just sack off everything we’ve been working hard on….as soon as that happens.

The real problem isn’t lack of motivation.
It’s noise. Too much conflicting advice. Too many rigid self made rules and pressure. An all or nothing approach that feels shaky whenever it’s challenged with things more prominent.

You can’t do fitness ā€˜perfectly. No one can.

So instead, building routines, structures and the bigger purpose can help you show up on those less motivated days. Having a reason why.

You don’t see progress through motivation. Flip it šŸ”„
You build in confidence and motivation, through consistent momentum and self belief. Which comes from having a proactive mindset and building trust in your ability to show up even when you don’t want to!

I guess I’m that girl? šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø

Growth and maturing in fitness land differently for everybody.

For me, it’s been learning to detach my identity and worth on my body or being just the fitness person. It’s having a clear set of goals, that aren’t all appearance and weight based. It’s being able to enjoy training / sport for all of the things that they add to my life. Rather than seeing it as a way of taking away from myself.

It’s been using training as a positive outlet, that gets me through hard times. Not just hard training, from a place of self destruction. Knowing I can enjoy elements of training and moving my body. That it’s okay to actually like it??

That caring for my appearance and expressing myself, come from ways other than shreds, egg white porridge and following a bodybuilder lifestyle…

That it’s ok to give a s**t about what you look like, without it becoming your entire reason for waking up, training and purpose for fitness.

Somewhere along the line, I cared less about looking lol a fit girl and actually started becoming a girl who was fit. Someone who doesn’t just look the part, but plays that part and has other things to show for it!

It feels nice.

All fun and games, until it’s VO2 Max ā˜ ļø

Then someone ends up hurt.
That someone is always me šŸ™‹šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø

Because you won’t always enjoy the process, love the journey and feel giddy when you see what’s planned.

I’d say find something in your training that keeps you excited, driven, hooked. Enjoy the process and all of that.

But if someone tells me to enjoy VO2 max, Sprint or all our efforts? Then they follow it up with ā€œI love them, me.ā€

I’m sorry hun, me and you aren’t the same. You do you, I’ll do me.

But whilst I joke about it, that’s one of the huge benefits of having a coach. Accountability. Not necessarily to them, but to yourself, your goals and your training. You won’t enjoy every session. You certainly won’t PB every time you train. You might question why you’re doing things.

But having a coach on board who knows how you tick and amends a programme to meet you where you’re at? Who is reactive but also proactive. Who is likely to push you harder than you would yourself, because they know you’re capable.

Someone who has faith and trust in you.
Who writes a programme with intent, purpose and takes the emotion and guesswork out of.

That = an investment I’m glad I’ve made with my own coach (and sure you will too) šŸ¤ŒšŸ¼

Considering coaching or wondering what it would look like, to help you start working towards your own targets? Send me a DM, message or link in my bio and let’s šŸ’¬

Happy spooking season x

Am I entering my running ARC? šŸƒā€ā™€ļøā˜€ļø

Swipe for a story and the entire range of emotion from last weekend. From throwing shapes in the lift hyped on black coffee and caramel Snack-a-Jacks, to panic attack next to Old Trafford half an hour before, vibing under the bridge when they gave us duttttty Techno beats, before lunging across the line and launching myself into the arms of the paramedic (soz to them).

Quite an eventful 90 minutes and 37 secs tbf.

First running race ā˜‘ļø
First half Mara ā˜‘ļø
Therefore automatic PB (I don’t make the rules).

Not my first dramatic finish line pic though šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø guess it’s my signature?

@team26performance making me into a runner now.

One thing about meā€¦šŸ¤

Been a professional TRY-athlete since birth.

Not an athlete. Let’s not get it twisted.

AKA try my best, give it a go, feel inspired and be exceptionally average at everything (but totally ok with that tbh)

The goal over here isn’t and will never be, to become an athlete.

It’s to enjoy the sport, learn along the way, take inspo from behaviours that athletes practice and just give it a bloody good go. Of course I put a lot of effort and time into my training. I get worked up and nervous before events because I care.

Like ALOT.

Which is also normal and cool? In my opinion, it’s cool to care. It’s cool to put in a lot of hardwork. It’s really cool to be determined and things not to come naturally.

I’ve been a try-athlete since I was little. Sport hasn’t come as naturally to me as it did a lot of my friends and teammates. I’m not naturally gifted or blessed with crazyyyyy genetics 🧬

I just try hard, put a lot of effort into things and channel a whole lot of neurospicy šŸŒ¶ļø into what I do (soz coach).

I think it’s almost become the ā€œnormā€ to not care or that effortless is trending. In which case, I unsubscribe from that trend and want to go so far the other direction, that the algorithm hates to see my coming.

So maybe just a baby triathlete (in years in the game), but a lifelong TRY-athlete, who’s happy to try hard and be proud of that.

Regardless of the outcome and result 🫔

A moment for the moments, because there’s been a few.

I’ve been busy stacking them and honestly, how it should be.

#weeklyrecap #triathlonlife #summerloving #spud #brickbybrick

Training with direction, purpose and seeing progress.
Brick by brick baby.

Mates dates ā¤ļø when potatoes are involved.

Gadgets that make life easier / satisfying AF.

Goooooood eating (especially when I’m not cooking).

Surviving and not always thriving.

Lil’ pig.

Levels to this Goretex game (still manifesting summer with shorts)

Feeling strong and celebrating it. Cos it’s not something I’ve felt often with endurance sport and so we have to shot and celebrate when I do!

šŸŽØ

My people, doing their thing.

Running in the sun = the only way to convince myself it’s enjoyable?

Fashion. Icon. Model. Serving.

Cereal = 🐐 and I won’t hear anything less than.

Touch grass.

I’m a savoury not sweet gal and even my sweat agrees

New gym lighting is šŸ§‘ā€šŸ³šŸ’‹

Not many I’ll share food with, but A & J Meade I’ll make an exception.

I’m never surprised when I hear one of these…

ā€œIt’s boringā€
ā€œIt’s just really hardā€
ā€œI’m not good enough for thatā€
ā€œI don’t look like the typeā€
ā€œFitness just isn’t for meā€

Because we live in a world where the idea and image of being fit and active, paints a picture in our heads. Advertising, campaigns, social media, clothes brands models play a part in making us believe that in order to be into fitness, you have to look a certain way.

Matching gym kits, lean bodies, expensive brands, photoshoot ready looks, really muscular, seemingly confident and alwaysssss ready for an Instagram story.
Thanks to everything being at our fingertips, we can see everything that other people do and instantly compare to ourselves.

Slaves to Strava. Addicted to fitness watches. Obsessed with social media highlight reels.

So we naturally create barriers in our minds as to why fitness isn’t for us. Because it feels safer to say that, than accept we don’t fit into those groups or can’t keep up with other people. It makes it seem like if you don’t fall into a set group, you’re not worthy of trying.

Maybe it isn’t that fitness isn’t right for you.

Maybe you’re coming at it with the wrong expectations and pressure?

Setting goals that are unrealistic for you. Aiming to achieve things that other people say are important. Trying to fit into an image and a box that wasn’t the right shape for you to start with. Copying what you see online. Using exercise as a form of punishment. Following trends that have zero connection to your life. Investing money in things that are literally scamming you.

Or you use exercise as a form of punishment, destructive behaviour and negative associations. Then wonder why you don’t stick at it.

Not meeting yourself where you’re at, then feeling disheartened when things inevitably go pear shaped.

So instead of ruling out fitness, training, sport and exercise….

Simply because you don’t fit in.

Maybe we need to ask ourselves and remind ourselves.

Rather than making myself fit into a pre-made box…
What box is the right shape for me, now.

Then go from there.

I’ll give you a clue… šŸ•µļøā€ā™€ļø

Not a single person that I asked, gave a word that was in anyway related to their body. Nobody quoted their body fat percentage or their clothing size.

Nobody gave their VO2 max score (regardless of how impressive) or marathon PB.

Not a single bodyweight was named, or max bench press quoted.

These were answers taken from when I asked a group of people I respect, trust and am inspired by, a set of questions.

All of the answers had much more to do with a personality trait, achievement or how someone hoped they showed up for others. Which isn’t to say that the more aesthetic based goals/physical attributes shouldn’t be important or meaningful. Especially if they’re things you’ve worked hard and taken a long time to achieve. These things or course hold value in our lives.

But they’re not our sole identity. Or our most valuable trait. The goals and targets we have, can and should be expand past just aesthetics and body based. They shouldn’t become our entire self worth.

Because if your number one quality as a human, is that you have a sub-ā€œxā€ body fat percentage or you fit into ā€œxā€ size jeans. Then your actions, behaviours and entire existence outside of that, aligns with it. So much so, that if it’s ever taken away? We can feel lost.

So if I asked you, what’s one word you’d use for yourself….

What’s your answer? Stay tuned for part 3.

Fitness and health might seem complicated…

But when you use analogies, sayings or cues to help you remember it can start to feel a little more familiar.

Here’s how I think cars and fitness = same same.

If you do anything this week, plssssssss avoid putting diesel in a petrol / leccy car. Give your engine the fuel it needs šŸŽļøšŸ’Ø

If you do one thing this weekend.

Make it something that both aligns with your goals and comes from a place of self respect.

That looks different for everybody.

What one person sees as self care, another might see in a different light.

For some of us, slowing down might be the better option, whilst there are some people who could do with a bit of energy and direction. Likewise, for some saying yes to something, is the harder but more beneficial choice. Then on the flip, there might be things whereby ā€œnoā€ would be a more sensible informed choice.

But when self respect, is the goal and standard…

All other actions that follow, align with that. They come from a more mindful and intentional place.

Some call it discipline?

Others call it alignment.

But when that is the standard you’ve set for yourself, to live trying to improve your quality of life in some way?

You’ll probably find yourself making better decisions. Or at least, one choice that will improve the rest of your weekend. Those small choices and actions stack up šŸ¦

Everybody knows someone like this…

Maybe you’re that person.

You can always count on us to ā¬‡ļø

1) have our gym kit ready and raring to go for any session, any time, any place. HMU!

2) to join you on that run you’ve been avoiding because it’s a lillllllllā€ bit rainy outside. Doesn’t matter, the cold never bothered us anyway.

3) have a spare hair tie, scrunchie, pair of socks, water bottle, emergency gel lurking. We got you boo.

4) down to double up on the world’s grimmest looking partner session. We might even offer to do all the burpees, because we are a good person and best kind of friend.

5) need someone to drag you to the gym? Or persuade you to sign up to that class? Don’t worry mate, I’ll probs be there anyway!

We just love it.

Just don’t ask me to share my food, because honestly, that’s too far xoxoxo
