My name is Adelola George (née Edema).

For the past 17 years, I have worked with children with special needs as a Special Needs Educator and Behaviour Specialist.

In 2012, I began educating people about autism, and through some of my experiences over the years, inclusion advocacy became a major part of my work.

Understanding that the inclusion of persons with disabilities requires both awareness and advocacy, I started the Special Needs Conference in 2017. Our very first edition was the Special Needs Conference for Churches.

We ran the conference from 2017 to 2021—and not even COVID could stop us! 😊

After five years, the Special Needs Conference for Churches is BACK! 🎉

And I would love for you to join me.

Date: September 5, 2026

Time: 4:00 PM (WAT)

Venue: Zoom & YouTube

The conference is completely FREE to attend! 🎉 However, registration is required. Link in bio.

Let’s learn, connect and work together towards building a Church where every child has a place. ❤️

I look forward to seeing you there! Lady smiling. She has Ghana weaving on her head and she's wearing an orange dress with a gold brooch by @adelolageorge

For 15 years now, August has been an important month of anniversaries in my life.

Resumed at my first Autism job at Patrick Speech and Languages Center on August 3, 2009.

Resumed at the Zamarr Institute, Abuja (an autism center) on August 10, 2010.

The very first Special Needs Conference for Churches was held on August 5, 2017 and the subsequent ones were all in August.

This year, I added a new feather to August. After a hectic 9/10 months, I graduated from the @pleasantplacesschoollekki for the QASP-S coursework.

We raised our glasses together virtually and celebrated it. What a day!

I started following @spectrumsis (Toyin Oduniyi) last year and met her physically in August at the @gtbank Autism Conference.

Her brother is on the autism spectrum and she blogs on autism and inclusion. She started a support group for siblings as well, @yoursafespace_ng. I learnt almost immediately that she's not just a blogger; she is an AUTHOR! She has about 13 books published already!

One of those books chronicles life as a sibling to an autistic person, 'The Highs and Lows of Having a Sibling With Autism.'

It's autism month, I just got the book... Let's say we dive in together. I'd read one chapter a day and share what I learnt.

Last year, I shared from @toyinesanadesokan's book, Sailing on a Rainbow. It was such an interesting read. I'll try to post them on my story daily.

Anyway, I really look forward to reading Toyin Oduniyi's book this month and sharing with you.

IT'S WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY!

Mental health matters to us at Jordan Learning Resource LTD, and here's why.

Some children with additional needs also experience mental health conditions, such as anxiety and depression, alongside their existing diagnoses.

Parents of children with special needs often experience significant stress, which can affect their mental health. For some, mental health challenges may have existed even before their caregiving journey.

Our ABA facilitators are not left out. They, too, may experience stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges.

Today, we are reminded that mental health matters for everyone. Children, parents, and professionals all deserve understanding, support, and care.

Let's create spaces where people feel safe to speak up, seek help, and receive the support they need.

At Jordan Learning Resource LTD, mental health matters. 💚

October 8, 2024. You had seen the doctor and ran some tests. Adekiite posted your picture eating asaro on our group, and he shared the doctor's feedback about how well you were doing. You sent me a message that you had gotten home and that the trip to Ondo was good.

October 9, 2024: Mummy sent a message in the morning about how grateful she was about your health. You were up and about, and was taking a walk in the compound.

What I didn't know was that we would get a call that afternoon that we should pray for Daddy because he wasn't responding.

October 9, 2026: Two years has passed. We miss you a lot, but we are grateful for the life you lived and the one we have been living since you left.

Yorubas always pray pe, "Ẹyin Baba a da o." And our testimony is that "Your back is good." 🤣🤣🤣

God has been good to us since you left, and the family you left behind has not scattered. 🙈

Meanwhile, you now have what we can call a great grandson, and I wish you were here to witness it. by @adelolageorge

The first time he buttoned his own shirt deserved a celebration. Did it get one? 🎉

Adelola George reminds parents that they, not the world, decide what success looks like for their child, and that every step deserves to be noticed.

Parents of children living with special needs, please take a break. ❤️

We know you’re doing your best every single day. Special needs parenting can be demanding, and caring for a child with special needs takes patience, strength and a lot of emotional energy.

During the Parents Training sponsored by Tripple A Foundation, organized by Patrick Speech and Language Centre in collaboration, Prof. Olurotimi Coker and Adelola George shared valuable insights on special needs parenting, caregiver support and parental wellbeing.

Prof. Coker emphasized something every parent needs to hear: take a break.

Go on vacation, even if it’s just once a month.
Do something that makes you happy.
Take yourself out.
Rest.
Breathe.
Come back refreshed.

He also encouraged parents to learn to understand situations from other people’s perspectives, because sometimes seeing things differently can change how we respond.

Being a parent or caregiver of a child with special needs doesn’t mean you have to forget yourself.

Your mental wellbeing matters. Your happiness matters. You matter too. ❤️

A very big thank you to Triple A Foundation for sponsoring this programme and making this important training possible. Your support is helping parents and caregivers access the knowledge, encouragement and support they need.

Here’s to raising children with the right support while also remembering to support the people raising them. ❤️

What is one thing you’ll do for yourself this month? Tell us in the comments. 👇🏽
