Two weeks ago at Fort St Elmo, we launched the catalogue of AMEN:NEMMEN. Thank you to everyone who joined us for the evening.

The catalogue brings together four commissioned poems by Norbert Bugeja and essays by Alexandra Pace, Alexander Zammit and Eva Zanardi, each offering a different view of the work. On the night, curator Andrew Borg Wirth sat down with the artist, Vince Briffa, essayist Eva Zanardi and interviewee Omar N'Shea to discuss the ideas and process behind the project, and the conversations it has sparked.

If you missed the launch, there's still time to experience the exhibition in person. AMEN:NEMMEN closes this week, on 8 October.

The catalogue is available for a donation of €10. To reserve your copy, send us a DM.

The weather kept us off the rooftop last Sunday, but Gonzi Hall at the Catholic Institute, set against the backdrop of Cremona's artwork, turned out to be a great stage for this reimagining of Francis Ebejer's landmark work ‘Il-Ħadd fuq il-Bejt’.

Ron Briffa returned to the stage to reshape one of Maltese theatre's most iconic scripts alongside Sarah Camilleri, Talitha Dimech and live soundscapes by Analise Mifsud, with sound designed by Mirko Galea.

Grateful to everyone who joined us for the closing of the Rooftop Series 2026, conceived and curated by artistic director Annalisa Schembri.

Rooftop Series Summer Festival 2026 was supported by @visitmalta, @aps.bank, @mapfremsvlife and @pwc_malta.

For this year’s visual arts project, the @adfculture has worked closely with @vincebriffastudio to reimagine AMEN:NEMMEN, an installation initially presented in 2002 in the chapel of @johanniterkirche.feldkirch in Austria.

Occupying the chapel of St Anne in Fort St Elmo, Valletta, AMEN:NEMMEN straddles between what one is ‘faithful to’ and what one ‘has faith in’. For weeks, Vince sat with twelve interviewees. What emerges is how universal the experience of faith can be. It paints a picture of hybridity, difference, empathy and hope. It is an exercise in language, an interrogation of hope and fundamentally, an encounter with one of the most significant facets of the human experience.

This artwork was curated by Andrew Borg Wirth and Sera Galea, and was only made possible through the immense support of @evansperspective from the Digital Presence office at @archdioceseofmalta.

Supported by @heritagemalta, @aps.bank and @visitmalta.

Special thanks to Alexandra Pace, Alexander Zammit, Eva Zanardi and Norbert Bugeja; Dylan Seychell, Giulia Privitelli, Ioulia Chante, Jamie Attard Biancardi, Jean Ebejer, Lydia Sant, Marama Corlett, Omar N’Shea, Payam Akhtarkhavari, Richard Scicluna, Shahed Bensaid, and Stephanie Sant.

Fort St Elmo opening hours apply, and entry is included in the €10 ticket price available for purchase on-site.

Our latest Rooftop Series Summer Festival event brought together Maltese immersive sound artists parpeduni and Barcelona-based trio FLAN for the first time, for an evening celebrating music and literature.

We now look forward to the next and final Rooftop Series Summer Festival event for this year on September 13, starring @ronbriffa_ and featuring a compelling new stage adaptation of Francis Ebejer’s celebrated Maltese work, Il-Ħadd fuq il-Bejt (“Sunday on the Roof”), a landmark play of modern Maltese theatre.

First staged at the Teatru Manoel in the early 1970s, the work explores the emotional and social tensions of Maltese life through themes of love, class, identity, tradition and change.

The Rooftop Series Summer Festival 2026 is supported by @visitmalta, @aps.bank, @mapfremsvlife, @piscopogardencentre, @pwc_malta, @inkontru.app, the Embassy of Spain in Malta and @bandaidmusic

Join us for the opening of REFUGE AND RECONSTRUCTION, an exhibition by Martin Bertrand

27 September 2026 | 18:00
Archbishop's Palace, Valletta

In the centre of the Mediterranean, Malta encapsulates many of the contradictions currently facing Europe. The archipelago had a population of nearly 590,000 at the end of 2025, a figure whose growth is partly driven by migration. Whilst arrivals by sea have fallen significantly in recent years, Malta remains on the front line when it comes to receiving people seeking protection. This decline does not, however, eliminate the challenges associated with asylum, accommodation and the integration of those now living on the island.

When Martin Bertrand began this project, the intention was to document how this small island was dealing with migration in the Mediterranean. He wanted to meet the people being received, observe the systems put in place and recount the human consequences of European migration policies. Over the months, the focus of the project gradually shifted. It was no longer simply a matter of photographing the reception or the waiting, but of understanding what comes after arrival.

To answer these questions, Martin Bertrand worked alongside various Maltese organisations, notably the @migrants.mt and its Welcoming Centre in Balzan, the sporting activities of SkateUni, the community activities of Spark15 and explored the different reality at state-run centres in Ħal-Far: that of geographically isolated places, situated far from the main urban centres and everyday Maltese life.

The exhibition will be designed as a journey through these different spaces and aims to offer a counterpoint to the usual portrayals of migration in the Mediterranean, which are often limited to boats, borders and emergency situations. It tells the story of what happens afterwards: the waiting, the learning, the bonds that are formed and the initiatives that gradually enable people to regain control of their own lives.

Presented by @franceinmalta and the Migrants Commission, in collaboration with the Archbishop's Delegate for Culture and @mela.org.mt
