🌿🍂 Reimagining an Entrance

While volunteers were caring for the Southern and Middle Divisions today, 40 students from NJIT’s Albert Dorman Honors College were transforming the Tiffany Boulevard entrance in the Extension Division.

With an investment of both time and resources, the students helped create new gardens in a gateway that had long been overlooked.

Neighbors stopped throughout the day to share their appreciation—a powerful reminder that when we care for a place, community feels it.

For NJIT students, whose education is grounded in innovation, problem-solving, and improving the world around them, today’s classroom was the landscape itself. We are deeply grateful for their partnership in helping this entrance feel seen again. 💚

Earlier this month, our First-Year Honors Scholars rolled up their sleeves for a week of garden care, clearing mountains of weeds and invasive species before a milestone planting day. For the first time, planting spanned all six ADHC biodiversity campus gardens, bringing 546 new plants to campus!

This is what happens when summer reading turns into action. From “Fruitful City” to “Nature’s Best Hope” to “American River,” generations of Honors scholars have taken what they read and put it to work. It started with biodiversity gardens across NJIT’s campus, grew into the Sustainable Cities project launched in Branch Brook Park, and now, inspired by Majora Carter’s “Reclaiming Your Community,” our newest scholars are tending the gardens planted by those who came before them. 💚

🌷 Want to help keep the gardens growing? Apply to join the Honors Garden Keepers, a new internal service opportunity for scholars to care for our six campus gardens, build leadership experience, and earn internal service hours. No gardening experience needed! The last slide has all the details and how to apply. ➡️

A special thank you to Dr. Stanko and Dr. Devan from the Urban Ecology Lab (UEL), NJIT Green, the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH), the Office of Sustainability, and Facilities for their continued support of our campus biodiversity gardens! 🌎

Reclaiming Your Community
For many ADHC scholars, this marked their first colloquium of the year! 🎉 This year’s First-Year Seminar reading centered on the idea of investing in and uplifting the communities we call home. In her work, Majora Carter challenges young people to think critically about what it means to create opportunity, strengthen neighborhoods, and contribute to lasting change.
NJIT had the honor of welcoming Carter to campus, where scholars heard firsthand that meaningful community change is rarely simple or immediate, it happens through persistence, collaboration, and one step at a time. 🫂

Global Health Systems: Digital Metamorphosis
Professor Martin Curley of Maynooth University introduced scholars to new approaches for transforming global health through digital innovation, systems thinking, and research-informed practice. Drawing on more than a decade of research and examples from Ireland’s health system, he explored how healthcare can shift from being centered primarily around hospitals to being more connected, preventative, and focused on the individual. Scholars also learned about emerging models such as secure patient information exchange platforms and mobile-based care that could help reshape how health services are delivere by @adhc_njit_officialpage

A student proposal focused on restoring biodiversity, strengthening the Second River edge and deepening community engagement at Branch Brook Park was selected as the winning concept in NJIT’s latest Albert Dorman Honors College biodiversity initiative - a proposal titled, “Living Parks by Parks for People” 🌳
“The whole process of our project was very inspiring, especially because we reside right now in Newark,” said civil engineering student Glendy Morocho. “As residents here right now, it's very good to learn more about the parks surrounding us, and how we can try to enhance the biodiversity around us.”
