Boys with ADHD get noticed because they’re loud about it. Girls turn it inward, and the world calls it a personality. Dreamy. Scattered. Too sensitive.
The after-school meltdown is the tell: holding it together all day costs everything, and the bill comes due at home, with the person she feels safest with. That’s not bad behavior. That’s trust.
Was your daughter (or you) missed for years? I keep hearing this story. 👇

The Lego thing confuses everyone. Grandparents, teachers, me for years. “They can focus fine when they WANT to.”
The interest-driven brain isn’t a character flaw, it’s the wiring. Once I stopped reading “won’t” and started reading “can’t right now,” everything about how I reacted changed. And weirdly, so did my kid.
Send this to the person in your life who still says “lazy.” I’ll wait. 👇

Somewhere around the teen years the meltdowns turn into slammed doors, and underneath it’s often the same thing: the criticism lands ten times harder than we sent it.
“You’re not in trouble” is the most powerful sentence in our house now. It unlocks the conversation before it starts. Problem on one side of the table, us on the other side together.
Anyone else’s teen a door-slammer? What’s working? Actually asking. 👇

The single best $10 I ever spent was a visual timer where the red disappears as time runs out. Not because mornings became perfect (lol) but because the fight moved from me-vs-them to them-vs-the-clock.
Time is invisible to a lot of these kids. Make it visible and half the battle changes shape.
What time do school mornings turn into a hostage negotiation at your place? 👇

The hardest lesson of my parenting life: in the meltdown, my words are noise. My calm is the message.
The conversation about “it’s just a cup” is real and worth having, but it only works once the alarm has stopped ringing. In the moment, my only job is being the calmest thing in the room. I fail at this plenty. It works anyway.
What’s the “wrong cup” in your house? Ours is also socks. Always socks.

Your ADHD kid isn’t ignoring you, and they’re not being defiant. Their working memory just drops things, and the first instruction knocks the rest right out of their hands.
The picture that fixed it for me: I was handing them four grocery bags with a broken handle. Everything fell, every time, and I blamed the kid for dropping them.
One bag at a time. A hug between bags. It feels slower but it actually happens, and nobody ends up yelling.
How many instructions do you stack at once? I was a 5-stacker before I knew. 👇

“Just start” is the most useless sentence in our house and I said it for years.
What finally clicked: the task isn’t too hard, the STARTING is. So we shrink the start until it’s almost silly (one problem, one sentence, five minutes) and momentum does the rest. Some nights just me sitting next to him folding laundry is enough.
Try the one-problem trick tonight and tell me what happens.

The interrupting used to drive me crazy until I understood what it actually is: their working memory is a leaky bucket, and that thought is water. They’re not trying to be rude, they’re trying to save the thought before it evaporates.
Giving the thought a safe place to live (a squeeze, a sticky note, a code word) works better than any amount of “be patient.”
What’s the interrupting like in your house? 👇
