POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Big sponsor shoutout to our friends over at @thebear.us an Austin-born, woman-led, Emmy-winning production company making some of our favorite commercials, branded films, and documentaries around.

Founded by Texas Playboys @bensteinbauer and @admiral_bernside (Berndt Mader), The Bear has collaborated with folks like Richard Linklater, David Gordon Green, and the Austin Film Society, all while helping tell stories for some pretty iconic brands.

Around here, Ben and Berndt are more than sponsors, they’re teammates, familiar faces in the dugout, and longtime contributors to everything we do at The Long Time.

And while you’re at it, give Ben’s new podcast @docwalkspod a follow. Hosted with Ben and Keith, it’s a walking conversation about the art, craft, and business of nonfiction filmmaking. If you love documentaries (or just hearing smart people talk shop while getting their steps in), it’s worth a listen.

Thanks, Bear, for supporting sandlot baseball and tellling good stories. taken in The Long Time by @admiral_bernside

Just picking myself up off the ground from the news of Bill’s passing. It’s been very moving seeing the outpouring of love for Billy Big Head. I think he’d appreciate the tears—hey, at least we were paying attention!

Bill Wise was a lot of things. A big heart, a great laugh and a really solid hugger. He was also a pain in the ass. He would and could go toe to toe with you over an idea, a decision. He was passionate and a fighter when he needed to be. But man was he talented. Quicker with a smart joke or turn of phrase than most anyone I knew. Brilliant ideas flowed from him like melted Irish butter. I hadn’t seen him in a minute, but we texted several weeks ago. We had had our falling outs and falling ins, but something special—maybe just the love—kept us both coming back in touch. I wish we had done more of that. Miss you Billiam Wise. Love you brother. by @admiral_bernside

We mark 50 walks with business partner, co-conspirator, and professor of things cinematic—Berndt Mader (@admiral_bernside) co-founder of The Bear (@thebear.us) and Ben’s filmmaking better-half of nineteen years. Lady Bird Lake, placid gray spring weather, and Berndt tracing his arc from sandbag-slinging grip on David Gordon Green’s GEORGE WASHINGTON to Austin’s hybrid-film provocateur.

The main event: the $2M Kid Rock documentary that was, until it wasn’t. Berndt pulled Ben past “no way” and into Nashville, where Danny McBride’s blessing got them into Bob Ritchie’s house weeks before COVID locked everything down. Katie Steinbauer sewed a mask, Berndt drove up anyway, and they captured an apology scene where an aging rockstar says he’s going to “try to sneak into heaven.” Then June 2022 happened—a homophobic slur went viral, Roughhouse evacuated, Live Nation grabbed the hard drives, and MY NAME IS KID became a film that will never see daylight.

We get into the art of directing real people through fake scenarios with BOOGER RED, Berndt’s CLOSE-UP-inspired hybrid adaptation of Mike Hall’s Texas Monthly exposé of the Mineola case, and how that story got a second life as the HBO docuseries HOW TO CREATE A SEX SCANDAL. Plus Werner Herzog impressions, the Pete Best of The Bear, a Richard Linklater dream collaboration, and the thesis statement for episode 50: “We follow the heartbreak.” taken in Lady Bird Lake - Downtown Austin, Texas by @admiral_bernside

A lot of people will tell you slow and low is the way to go when smoking a turkey. Well, slow and low just ain’t in my DNA. I smoke turkeys like I play Mahjong, hot and fast.

Happy New Year!

Dear Friends. I know I tell many of you about @texasplayboysbaseball and this sandlot baseball world I'm involved in. But this Saturday is another great opportunity for you to experience what I'm always yapping about. Again, the baseball is the backdrop to what is always a festive hang with family and friends. @scholzgarten brings the dogs and brews, @spaceflightrecords is bringing the tunes. It's gonna be another legendary day @thelongtimetexas

Details below:

This Saturday, April 13th at @thelongtimetexas we're stepping up to the plate and you can too for @spaceflightrecords because they develop, promote, and advance the careers of musicians and recording artists by stripping down economic barriers and increasing representation, diversity, and access to the industry. Please consider donating $10 or more * link in bio * By doing so, you’ll be automatically entered into the game day raffle, which includes tons of cool stuff from our sponsors and friends.
