The theatrical opening of WINNEBAGO MAN, summer 2010.

We opened at the Landmark Sunshine Cinema in SoHo to a packed house. Michael Moore introduced the film. Jeff Garlin showed up and jokingly claimed that Larry David’s whole persona was basically stolen from Jack Rebney. NY1 came out and did a piece on the opening.

I was a young filmmaker from Austin who had spent years making a documentary about an angry RV salesman I’d first seen yelling on a VHS tape. And suddenly we were opening a movie in New York City.

The whole thing felt completely surreal. Honestly, it still does watching this 16 years later.

One of the things I love most about finding old footage like this is seeing all the people who helped make these moments happen. Movies are never made by one person.

Huge thanks to Paul Lovelace, Jessica Wolfson, Damon Cook and Robert McFalls for making this featurette and capturing a weekend I’m very glad somebody thought to document. And to Jessica Edwards, who handled publicity and helped turn the opening into an actual event. Also to Kino Lorber who pushed the film and trusted in our vision.

And of course producer, Joel Heller, prodcer/editor, Malcolm Pullinger, DPs Bradley Beesley and Berndt Mader and all many, many people who worked on this movie.

Like Jack Rebney said, "Do you believe any of that shit?"

Big sponsor shoutout to our friends over at @thebear.us an Austin-born, woman-led, Emmy-winning production company making some of our favorite commercials, branded films, and documentaries around.

Founded by Texas Playboys @bensteinbauer and @admiral_bernside (Berndt Mader), The Bear has collaborated with folks like Richard Linklater, David Gordon Green, and the Austin Film Society, all while helping tell stories for some pretty iconic brands.

Around here, Ben and Berndt are more than sponsors, they’re teammates, familiar faces in the dugout, and longtime contributors to everything we do at The Long Time.

And while you’re at it, give Ben’s new podcast @docwalkspod a follow. Hosted with Ben and Keith, it’s a walking conversation about the art, craft, and business of nonfiction filmmaking. If you love documentaries (or just hearing smart people talk shop while getting their steps in), it’s worth a listen.

Thanks, Bear, for supporting sandlot baseball and tellling good stories.
