Who is ready for the fourth weekend of Pit-jama Parties?

In celebration of National Pit Bull Awareness Month, we are looking for people to open their homes to a shelter pittie for a weekend. Every week brings a new group of dogs the chance to relax outside the shelter and show off what makes them special.

Meet this weekend’s sleepover guests:

🐾 Whitney #A1405361 is back for another chance at a weekend getaway, and she can't wait to trade shelter life for pajama time!

🐾 Blue #A1044039
🐾 Nova #A1414439
🐾 Fazbear #A1415123

Ready to be a weekend foster? Sign up to be a weekend foster by filling out our Pit-jama Party Foster Interest Form at bit.ly/SJPit-JamaPartyFosterForm

All you need to provide is a little space on the couch, some love, and a chance to enjoy life outside the shelter. We will take care of the supplies.

Pick-up is Friday, October 16, and we will send your pittie home with the supplies they need, pajamas included!

Can’t foster this weekend? There are still two additional weekends in October to join the party! Sign up to give a shelter pittie a cozy weekend at home, or stop by the San José Animal Care Center to donate new or gently used dog pajamas. There is still time to make a difference!

✨ The 3-3-3 Rule: Bringing Home Your New Shelter Pet ✨

Bringing a new pet home is exciting but adjustment takes time. The 3-3-3 Rule helps set realistic expectations and supports a smooth, successful transition for both pets and their people.

🐾 First 3 Days
Your pet may feel overwhelmed or unsure. Stick to a routine, stay calm, give them space, and avoid forcing interactions. Patience is key.

🐾 First 3 Weeks
Stress starts to fade and personality begins to shine. This is a great time to build trust, reinforce training, and stay consistent with boundaries. Celebrate the small wins!

🐾 First 3 Months
Your pet feels at home. Trust grows, routines are understood, habits form, and the bond truly develops.

Every pet is different, some may need more time while others adjust more quickly, but the 3-3-3 Rule reminds us to lead with patience, compassion, and understanding. 💕

We know the first week can feel overwhelming but slow progress is still progress and we promise, it will be sooo worth it!🐶🐱

Lucky (ID #A1402809) spent the weekend in a Pit-Jama Party foster home, and his foster family gave us a wonderful glimpse into what it was like to have this affectionate, laid-back guy at home. Here is what they had to say:

"My husband and I fostered Lucky for the Pit-jama Party this past weekend and wanted to share our experience with him.

Lucky is very affectionate with kisses and his favorite thing is being close to you, ensuring he's firmly pressed against you as he receives pets. After a walk, a meal, or going out to the bathroom, he almost always immediately sought out a comfy spot to snooze. He seems very much like a couch potato pittie, which worked great for us being in an apartment.

He was great on leash when we went for walks; he'd have little bursts of energy initially, but then walks gently next to you the rest of the walk.

Lucky was non-reactive to different types of dogs, barking or not, and other animals. His tail would wag when he saw one, but he wasn't overly interested beyond a possible sniff or two. He was also not reactive to loud noises, including cars, people, and random apartment noises.

He had no accidents the entire stay, sleeping contently on his blanket/pillow outside of a crate each night without issue.

In general, Lucky is a very quiet and chill dog who gets excited when it is time to go outside. He does not consistently respond to his name but does respond to kissy noises and similar sounds. His foster noticed he may be slightly hard of hearing, but he is not deaf.

He appears to know basic commands like sit and shake, taking treats very gently.

All in all, it was really wonderful having him with us for the weekend and we miss him already. Anyone that adopts him will be lucky to have him in their family!"

Thank you to Lucky’s foster family for opening their home to him for the weekend and sharing such a thoughtful look at this sweet couch potato.

Lucky is still looking for his forever family. Come meet him at the San José Animal Care Center, 2750 Monterey Road, San José.

Whitney (ID #A1405361), an affectionate, calm, and easygoing pup who knows how to make the most of a Tails & Trails adventure!

Whitney hopped in the car, explored a busy park and PetSmart, and took in the sights and sounds of people, dogs, joggers, bikes, geese and crowds like a pro. She started her walk with a little enthusiasm, then quickly settled into a lovely loose-leash stroll, checking in with her handler along the way.

And her favorite activity? Getting pets and attention from her new friend, followed closely by a few dramatic rolls in the grass.

Whitney:
🐾 Handles busy environments beautifully
🐾 Loves affection and is learning that calm, quiet behavior is the best way to ask for pets
🐾 Walks nicely on leash after settling in
🐾 Rides wonderfully in the car
🐾 Enjoys a good sniffari and finds squirrels very interesting

Whitney is ready to trade her shelter days for more walks, more adventures and, most importantly, more people to love. Could you be her next adventure buddy? Come meet her at San José Animal Care Center, located at
2750 Monterey Road, San José, CA 95111

Smoke (ID #A1409217) had a wonderful weekend in a Pit-Jama Party foster home, and his foster gave us the sweetest glimpse into what life with this gentle giant is like. Here is what they had to say about their weekend with Smoke:

"I had such a great time with Smoke.

Smoke loved his pajamas! He was extra cuddly with them on. He may be 60 pounds, but he thinks he is a tiny lap dog! He loves to cuddle on the couch with you.

Smoke and Milo (my cat) bonded over the weekend. At first, Smoke was nervous with the cat and ran away from him. As the day went on, Smoke and Milo had lots of fun running around the house. Once they were both tired, they took a nap on the cold floor. Smoke had zero reactivity with the cat. From what I saw this weekend, he seems to be good with cats!

Another great thing about Smoke was that he is a very good listener. We went on a lot of walks around the neighborhood. I would make him stop and sit every now and then, and he listened every single time. He doesn’t pull on the leash and does not get distracted by other dogs or squirrels.

Overall, Smoke is looking for someone to love on him. He is a big baby that loves to be cuddled with. Smoke is a great walker and likes playing fetch. He may look big and scary, but he is one of the sweetest dogs I’ve seen. He is a gentle giant and I really hope someone can give him the chance!!!"

A huge thank you to Smoke’s weekend foster for giving him a break from the shelter and sharing such a wonderful update.

Smoke is still looking for his forever home! Come meet him at the San José Animal Care Center!
