What is the driving force or voice behind your photographic work? Making more photographs, working on making work, and getting work out are all important for expanding and growing your practice. But without a practice of connecting with your work, learning from your work, and taking risks, it is easy to get “stuck” or “run in circles.”
Do you have a photographic practice of following your intuition and strengthening this part of your creative voice? At some point, you tapped into the intuitive part of creating and identified that as uniquely you. We are born with this within us, and it is waiting to be heard and made a regular part of our practice.
I will be teaching a 5-day workshop in Athens, Greece, November 2 through 7th @palmtreeworkshops . Participants will bring work. We will take photographs in one of the most ancient cities in the world. We will print photographs to critique and discuss your visual language and what questions your work is addressing. There will be exercises throughout the 5 days to bring into your practice of making work. At the end of the workshop, we will make a zine with our curated work that will be seen at Paris Photo.
Take this safe space to cultivate your attention. Learn to sharpen and expand an intuitive practice of making. Get in touch with yourself so you can get behind your work.

“Attention without feeling, I began to learn, is only a report. An openness, an empathy, was necessary if the attention was to matter.”
I often think about this quote by the late, great poet,Mary Oliver. Simply observing things in the world implies a certain detachment between the seeing and the seen. I interpret Oliver’s words as: if you focus your attention with your vulnerability, empathy, and care, you will bridge the gap between what you see and what is observed.
Where do you focus your attention in photography? What is the driving force or voice behind your work? Making more photographs, working on making work, and getting work out are all important for expanding and growing your practice. But without a practice of connecting with your work, learning from your work, and taking risks, it is easy to get “stuck” or “run in circles.”
Do you have a photographic practice of following your intuition? If you haven’t at one point let this part of your creative space take over, you probably would have put the camera down by now. It isn’t “cool” photography or great composition that keeps us yearning to keep making photographs. At some point, you tapped into the intuitive part of creating and identified that as uniquely you. We are born with this within us, and it is waiting to be heard.

I’m leading my last 3 day photobook dummy workshop of 2026: “From Project to Object” @cpw_kingston from October 2 - 4. Limited seats remaining. First come first serve. This three-day workshop is an immersive introduction to the art and process of making a photobook dummy. Open to photographers at all levels, the workshop guides participants through the full arc of transforming a body of work into a tangible, held object: the first draft of a book.
Through guided editing and sequencing sessions, participants will work to find the heart of their project: its logic, its rhythm, its emotional arc. What does this body of work want to be? How does sequence create meaning? How does the viewer enter and leave the work?
Working with workprints, image files, and a blank notebook, participants will build a basic first draft dummy, learning how decisions about scale, pacing, and structure begin to transform a sequence of photographs into an object with presence and intention. The dummy is not a final product. It is a thinking tool, a proposal, a way of seeing your work that a screen cannot offer.
By the end of the three days, each participant will leave with a completed first draft dummy and a clearer sense of their project and its possibilities.
Whether you are curious about how your images might come together in narrative and book form, or you have a project already underway and want to find a way to give that narrative a form, this workshop meets you where you are.
WHAT TO BRING: Digital images on a harddrive or cloud-based online storage, small prints, and a blank notebook of your choice.

Excited to announce I’ll be teaching History of the Photobook online that will begin Sept 14. 10 days from now! Sign ups are open until full.

@icp

This course surveys the history of the photobook, from its origins-just 20 years after the invention of photography-to the present day.

Alongside Parr and Badger's foundational volumes, the reading list draws on photobooks that expand the historical record to include women, people of color, and LGBTQ photographers left out of the dominant narrative.

Each session pairs lecture with open conversation, tracing how these works, canonical and overlooked alike, continue to fuel the photobooks being made today. The course is designed to inspire and inform photographers who are developing, or beginning to imagine, a photobook of their own.

Fabulous Day at @cpw_kingston zine and Book fair. Spent the day at our table with previous photobook student and local artist and photographer, Dana Matthews. We had a wonderful talk with a panel of previous students of the Photobook course. Thanks to the big crowd that showed up! Extra plus was that my kiddos came by for the talk. See ya tomorrow!
If you didn’t make it today, no worries, there is just one more day tomorrow swing by and say hey! taken in Kingston, New York by @adriannaault

Join me in Athens, Greece this November with Palm Tree Workshop.  We will spend a week together looking at work and photographing throughout this ancient city.  Through various exercises we will practice ways to follow and listen to our intuitive guide.  What photographer’s work have you gravitated toward, and why?  What compels your curiosity and how do you navigate that in your work?  What question does your work want to answer? This workshop focuses on discovering the question your work is circling.

-The eye should learn to listen before it looks.  -Robert Frank

An interview I did with @adriannaault for @palmtreeworkshops’ website. Swipe to the end to see the mini video portrait of Adrianna that her daughter @sundayaultnolan shot and edited. It’s really good.

Adrianna is teaching a workshop this November at Palm Tree’s Athens outpost, and I think there are still a few spaces left. See thepalmtreeworkshops.com for info.
