“They don’t match our vibe.”

Without speaking, a person’s presence can shift a room. Why is that?

Because sometimes, simply being present can mean crossing an Invisible Border.

In my second paper of the Social Architecture Diagnostic Trilogy, The IICE Framework, I explore what happens when social boundaries are crossed: two predictable group behaviors that follow, and the internal impact on the individual who crossed the boundary.

IICE stands for:

Invisible Borders
In-group Retreat
Cultural Recoil
Emotional Displacement

It maps four connected social dynamics that subtly regulate cultural legitimacy through what people are allowed to express, associate with, or embody.

The paper can serve as a tool to name and understand these behavioral patterns and to consider alternative ways of belonging that don’t require social punishment for a person’s expansion in who they choose to be.

The Social Architecture Diagnostic Trilogy is a six-paper project exploring how legitimacy is regulated, gatekept, and internalized across social life. I’m releasing it as three movements:

Movement 1: The Architecture of Social Enforcement
Movement 2: The Architecture of Gatekeeping
Movement 3: The Architecture of Psychological Residue

You can read or listen to the second paper, The IICE Framework, using the link in my bio.

Why is it that everyone always gets silent when that one person shares their ideas?

Sound familiar?

I explore this in the first paper of my Social Architecture Diagnostic Trilogy: The Socialized Tools of Power (STOP).

STOP names four common behaviors individuals and institutions use to protect legitimacy, manage recognition, and maintain power. These behaviors are often learned socially through ordinary interactions and can leave the people on the receiving end carrying the emotional and cognitive labor of decoding what’s really happening.

Over the next several months, I’ll be releasing the trilogy as six papers across three movements:

Movement 1: The Architecture of Social Enforcement
Movement 2: The Architecture of Gatekeeping
Movement 3: The Architecture of Psychological Residue

Together, the trilogy explores how legitimacy is regulated, gatekept, and internalized across social life.

You can read or listen to the first paper, the Socialized Tools of Power; the link is in my bio.
