For quite some time, I kept my writing to myself. Waiting for the perfect moment to share my work. I didn’t realize how impactful and important participating in open mics would become. Eventually I found my open mic home at @collidezinephilly . There’s so much I didn’t do during my creative journey in Philadelphia. I can count on one hand how many times I appeared as a featured performer. There’s many people who haven’t heard my work or prefer that of someone else. But that doesn’t matter now. What matters are the bonds I’ve forged. The people who have obtained copies of my books and have told me personally the pieces that have spoken to them. The hugs, the smiles, the memorable moments that have carried me through the past two years. I wouldn’t be where I am today, finding an outlet for my infamous negative thoughts, growing in confidence in regard to speaking in front of others, realizing that I’m never truly alone, without the poetry community I found in Philadelphia, my hometown. Orlando is growing. It’s no longer solely the place where theme parks thrive; there’s a vibrant restaurant scene and with that will hopefully come poets and artists yearning to commiserate in misery with each other. I love you, Philly creatives. Thank you for making me, me. #herestous #philly #poetry #phillypoet #phillycreatives #creativecommunity #feelslikehome #openmic #openmiccommunity #phillyopenmic

After months of planning, run throughs and a rain check Language N’ Motion debuted on Sunday, introducing a new form of embodied storytelling to the world!

We’re deeply grateful to those who came out and made space for something different. It was powerful to see folks reflect directly on their mats and take away something personal from an experience we created together.

ELA has officially moved beyond the gallery walls, and into the world of movement.

Language N’ Motion continues on.

When I started this poetry journey 3 years ago, I encountered many lessons, some of which I’m still learning. One lesson is about community. I’ve had discussions with other poets and have written about this topic myself. Anything creative does not come about through solo actions; as hyper-independent as I might be it takes a village to see the world through an artistic viewpoint and to be able to translate those observations into something others can use for their own interpretations. The ‘Squared Circle Human’ book launch provided another lesson in what it means to be a poet in Philadelphia. My husband can tell you that I dwell on the negative. I’d like to start dwelling on the positive. When you ask people to show up for you, if you’ve cultivated the right community, they always will. Focus on what you do have and not what you don’t. Thank you to my featured readers, my open mic participants, Superfan Wrestling zine for sponsoring our open mic, and to @wbmstandish for serving as photographer and for doing an on the spot chip review. Two of the most fundamental parts of wrestling are to make your partners look good and to put other people over. I think we accomplished both of these the other night. ‘The Squared Circle Human’ and ‘Agreeable Gray’ available for purchase. It was an honor to take photos for the launch party for @cheshiresnoop’s poetry collection, The Squared Circle Human at @peoplesgalleryproject. Couldn’t imagine a better slate of poets and performers to celebrate this release. Be sure to pick up The Squared Circle Human, it’s an emotionally powerful dwelling on life, love, and pro wrestling, and honestly what more could you ask for?
