🍽️ Get a sampler plate to taste a bit of everything. That’s what we ordered and we loved it

💬 Ask the staff for recommendations. They’re super helpful and great at steering you toward new flavors you’ll love

🍫 The Nutella pita was a sweet surprise for the kids. Coloring pages and a kids menu were a hit with the little ones

Tips to visit Salmon Days and Issaquah Salmon Hatchery👇

🎉 Issaquah Salmon Days @salmondaysfest runs Oct 3-4, 2026 10am-6pm, with a parade, live music, food booths, and a kids’ Field of Fun

🚌 Parking is tight during the festival - park free at the Issaquah Transit Center and take the shuttle (marked “Special”) straight there, $2.75 for adults, kids ride free

🚗 About 15 miles east of Seattle, roughly 20-25 min by car outside rush hour

🍽️ The Kiwanis Salmon BBQ is the actual salmon bake - $20, cash or card, 10am-5pm, across from the hatchery

🐟 Issaquah Salmon Hatchery @issaquahsalmonhatchery - Washington’s most visited hatchery, where over 20,000 salmon use an incredibly sensitive sense of smell to find their way back here every fall

🆓 Even outside Salmon Days, kids can feed trout and watch salmon up close for free, year round

🍢 Sanyoung Surf & Turf BBQ @sanyoungbbq - northern Chinese skewers by the handful, plus seafood, creative fruit drinks, and beer, in Bellevue near Seattle

🔥 The skewers are the star - mouthwatering and flavorful, and I was surprised by everything they can skewer. All of it was great!

🦪 Save room for the seafood - we ordered the clams and oysters. They were delicious!

🌽 Ask your server for recommendations for kids - they have great ones!

🍹 Creative fruit drinks and beer are both on the menu and pair perfectly with the meal

⏰ Opens at 4:30pm - we went at 5:30 and the room was already lively

🌈 Rainbow chasing is our favorite free rainy day activity with kids in Seattle. All you need is rain, a little sun, and a reason to go outside.

🌤️ Rain with sun breaks is the magic combo, so watch for bright patches opening up while it’s still drizzling

☀️ Keep the sun at your back and look toward the dark rain cloud, that’s where the rainbow shows up

🕗 Go early morning or late afternoon when the sun is low, midday sun sits too high

💧 Bigger raindrops make brighter colors

🚗 Be ready to move, the rainbow shifts as the rain does

🍎 Swans Trail Farms is a kid-friendly working farm in Snohomish, about 30 minutes from Seattle. There is so much to do, they have an apple orchards, pumpkin patch, corn maze, and more!

🍏 Picking right now: Cosmic Crisp, Ambrosia and Jonagold. Cosmic Crisp was developed in Washington and took about 20 years to create

🌳 The orchard is planted with dwarf trees, so kids can reach the apples themselves. Over 4,000 trees across 5 acres

🧺 Head to the back and the sides of the orchard for the bigger, riper apples. The front rows get picked over first

🍩 Cider mill with apple cider donuts made fresh daily

🎃 U-Pick apples and the 50-acre pumpkin patch are both free to enter, you only pay for what you pick

🌽 The Harvest Festival side needs an attractions wristband: 12-acre Washington State corn maze, hayride, cow train, zipline, duck races, petting farm and play area

🐟 Issaquah Salmon Days @salmondaysfest - Washington’s largest two-day festival, held every first weekend of October to welcome salmon back to Issaquah Creek, with the hatchery as the star attraction.

📅 Every first weekend of October (2026: Oct 3-4), 10am-6pm, and admission is free

🚌 Easiest parking: the Issaquah Transit Center is free on weekends, and the shuttle marked “Special” takes you to the festival

🚗 Not into the shuttle, or have little kids? Park in the neighborhood by Veterans Memorial Park. Early or late afternoon gives you better odds of finding a spot. It’s right next to the Field of Fun but a longer walk to the hatchery.

🎁 Make sure to visit the Nick’s Magnificent @nicksmagnificent booth right across from the library. They’re a primary sponsor of Salmon Days, with great goodie bags and an amazing play space in Issaquah.

🍦 The hand-dipped ice cream stand from Boehm’s Candies @boehmscandies was a hit with us, so grab a cone, then explore “Foods of the World” in the train depot parking area

🍂 The leaves are changing colors in Issaquah, and the golden leaves as a backdrop for the festival are dreamy

Christmas in September 👇

Leavenworth @visitleavenworthwa is a Bavarian village in the Cascades that never packs Christmas away. My kids loved celebrating Christmas and opening presents in September. This would make a perfect Seattle day trip.

🍪 The Gingerbread Factory @gbfleavenworth - the building looks like a gingerbread house. Cookies come out warm all day.

🎄 Kris Kringl - Christmas shop on Front Street, open every day since 1986.

🥜 Leavenworth Nutcracker Museum @nutcrackermuseum - over 9,000 nutcrackers, the largest collection in the world. Arlene Wagner started it in 1995 and still runs it at 101.

🎁 To make it even more special, let each kid pick one thing and open it right there.

📍 All three are on Front Street in Leavenworth - 2.5 hrs from Seattle on Highway 2.

🎨 Coliseum of Art @coliseumofart - a free, kid-friendly art exhibit filling a whole floor of Seattle’s 1916 Coliseum Theater, with interactive pieces, glass and light you walk straight into.

📅 Open Wed to Sun, 12 to 6pm, through September 28, 2026 (go soon before it closes!)

🍿 Free popcorn and drinks as you enjoy the art - no ticket, no reservation.

🦣 A woolly mammoth bone is set into the rock base of the big copper sculpture - easy to walk past if you don’t look down.

🕐 Guided tours at 1, 2 and 3pm - the full tour gets you into upper levels that have been closed to the public for decades.

🎬 This is understood to be the first theater in America built specifically for movies, and it spent thirty years hidden behind a clothing store.
