the prelude
act I reflection

a few hours before reflection, aeitos’ inaugural act, the table began to take shape at patmos’ shipyard.

ceramics inspired by traditional patmian forms, the warm glow of monastery beeswax candles and holy bread shaped a table rooted in the island, setting the scene for the evening to follow conceived with @wanderersupper and @familiar_outliers

λίγες ώρες πριν την έναρξη του reflection, της πρώτης πράξης του aeitos, το τραπέζι άρχισε να παίρνει μορφή στο patmos marine, το καρνάγιο του νησιού.

με κεραμικά εμπνευσμένα από παραδοσιακές πατμιακές φόρμες, το ζεστό φως των μοναστηριακών κεριών και τον άρτο, στήθηκε ένα τραπέζι βαθιά συνδεδεμένο με το νησί, για τη βραδιά που σηματοδότησε την αρχή του aeitos.

ιδιαίτερες ευχαριστίες στην κλαιρη παπαγρηγορακη που συνέβαλε στην εύρεση του ιδιαίτερου χώρου, στον σπύρο του spiro για τα κεραμικά που διακόσμησαν τα τραπέζια μας και στον κύριο σώζο του tarsanas marine club που μας προσέφερε τον χώρο του ναυπηγείου στο aeitos.

Over the weekend I had the pleasure of showing in Greece on the island of Patmos performing “Cleaning”.

Thelonious Stokes mops the space with charcoal-infused water. Through the repetitive gesture of cleaning, charcoal is diluted and dispersed across a space, transforming an act of removal into an act of accumulation.

It feels special because Patmos is apparently the island where John the apostle saw God and wrote the Book Of Revelation. Earlier this year I climbed Mount Sinai where Moses received the commandments. by @aeitos

is announcing thelonious stokes as one of the two artists behind presence, the second act of the prelude.

an american artist working across painting, performance and design, stokes explores the relationship between body, history and space, using performance as a way to approach collective memory and the social dimensions of art.

for aeitos, he brings “cleaning” to patmos. through a repetitive gesture transforming an act of removal into an act of accumulation.

what begins as a gesture of care slowly alters the space itself. the body moves, the mark remains, and what is meant to disappear becomes increasingly present.

ο Thelonious Stokes, με καταγωγή από τις ΗΠΑ, διερευνά μέσα από τη ζωγραφική, την performance και το design τη σχέση ανάμεσα στο σώμα, την ιστορία και τον χώρο. στο έργο του, η περφόρμανς γίνεται ένα μέσο προσέγγισης της συλλογικής μνήμης και της κοινωνικής διάστασης της τέχνης.

aeitos is announcing dafni krazoudi as one of the the two artists behind presence, the second act of the prelude.

a greek artist based in berlin, krazoudi works across choreography, language and installation, creating site-responsive environments where mythology, memory, belief and fiction begin to overlap.

for aeitos, she brings physical to astivi, one of chora’s historic buildings, where the work will unfold in dialogue with the particular character of the space.

somewhere between melancholy and ridicule, the sacred becomes physical.

drawing loosely from the ancient egyptian opening of the mouth ceremony, physical approaches ritual as a way of giving form to what resists closure. through repetition, objects, spoken words and movement, meaning is not simply represented, but produced through the act of doing.

at astivi, these questions enter a place already carrying its own layers of memory, use and time. the building becomes neither backdrop nor stage, but part of the encounter.

ελληνίδα καλλιτέχνις με έδρα το βερολίνο, το έργο της Δάφνης αναπτύσσεται μέσα από τη χορογραφία, τη γλώσσα και την εγκατάσταση. δημιουργεί έργα σε διάλογο με τον εκάστοτε χώρο, όπου η μυθολογία, η μνήμη, η πίστη και η μυθοπλασία συνυπάρχουν.

για το aeitos, η Δάφνη παρουσιάζει την performance με τίτλο physical στο Astivi, ένα από τα πιο ιστορικά κτίρια της χώρας της πάτμου. το έργο ξεδιπλώνεται σε διάλογο με τον ιδιαίτερο χαρακτήρα του χώρου.

κάπου ανάμεσα στη μελαγχολία και στο σαρκασμό, το ιερό αποκτά σωματική υπόσταση.

αντλώντας έμπνευση από το τελετουργικό του ανοίγματος του στόματος των αρχαίων αιγυπτίων, η performance physical προσεγγίζει το τελετουργικό ως έναν τρόπο να δώσει μορφή σε ό,τι δεν επιδέχεται ένα οριστικό τέλος. μέσα από την επανάληψη, τα αντικείμενα, τον προφορικό λόγο και την κίνηση, το νόημα δεν αναπαρίσταται απλώς, αλλά παράγεται μέσα από την ίδια την πράξη.

is announcing yiannis pappas as the artist behind reflection, our inaugural act of the prelude.

born on patmos and based in berlin, pappas works across performance, photography, video and installation, with a practice deeply concerned with the relationship between space, the body and the ways we inhabit the world.

for aeitos, he returns to his birthplace through sound, bringing revise to the island through an archival audio excerpt of the work.

first presented at the royal theater carré in amsterdam as part of no intermission, a project by the @abramovicinstitute, revise invited audiences to reflect on freedom, justice, impunity, environmental responsibility, everyday life and peace.

at its centre, a question remains: if human rights are truly universal, how can we embody them in our daily lives?

this return is an act of collective listening. as a voice from patmos, carried away to see the world is now brought back to the island to question it.

το aeitos με χαρά παρουσιάζει τον Γιάννη Παππά για την εναρκτήρια πράξη της prelude edition, το reflection.

γεννημένος στην πάτμο και με έδρα το βερολίνο, ο Παππάς κινείται ανάμεσα στην performance, τη φωτογραφία, το βίντεο και την εγκατάσταση. η πρακτική του εστιάζει στη σχέση ανάμεσα στον χώρο, το σώμα και τους τρόπους με τους οποίους κατοικούμε τον κόσμο.

για το aeitos, ο Γιάννης επιστρέφει στον τόπο όπου γεννήθηκε μέσα από τον ήχο, φέρνοντας το έργο revise στην πάτμο μέσα από ένα αρχειακό ηχητικό απόσπασμα του έργου.

το revise παρουσίασε για πρώτη φορά στο royal theater Carré στο Άμστερνταμ, στο πλαίσιο του no intermission, ενός πρότζεκτ του @abramovicinstitute , προσκαλώντας το κοινό να αναλογιστεί την ελευθερία, τη δικαιοσύνη, την ατιμωρησία, την περιβαλλοντική ευθύνη, την καθημερινή ζωή και την ειρήνη.

αυτή η επιστροφή γίνεται μια πράξη συλλογικής ακρόασης. μια φωνή από την πάτμο, που έφυγε για να γνωρίσει τον κόσμο, επιστρέφει τώρα στο νησί για να το θέσει υπό αμφισβήτηση.

after a long wait, something begins.

ritual starts before the gesture itself. in the preparation, the repetition, the moment of gathering. it gives shape to time and turns an ordinary act into something shared.

on patmos, ritual is woven into the fabric of the island: into its seasons, its movements, its silences, and the ways people come together.

μετά από μια μεγάλη αναμονή, κάτι ξεκινά.

η τελετουργία αρχίζει πριν από την ίδια την πράξη. από την προετοιμασία, την επανάληψη, τη στιγμή της συνάντησης. δίνει μορφή στον χρόνο και μετατρέπει μια καθημερινή πράξη σε μια κοινή εμπειρία.

στην πάτμο, η έννοια του τελετουργικού είναι συνυφασμένη με την ίδια τη ζωή του νησιού: με τις εποχές, τις κινήσεις, τις σιωπές του αλλά και τους τρόπους με τους οποίους οι άνθρωποι συναντιούνται.

memory settles into a place over time.

in patmos, interiors carry traces of the people who have lived, gathered and passed through them.

a door opens, a window lets the air in, and suddenly a room feels inhabited by something that is no longer there.

aeitos is interested in these traces. in how a place holds memory, and how our presence, even briefly, becomes part of it.

η μνήμη ριζώνει σε έναν τόπο με τον χρόνο.

στην Πάτμο, οι εσωτερικοί χώροι διατηρούν τα ίχνη όσων έζησαν, συναντήθηκαν και πέρασαν από αυτούς.

μια πόρτα ανοίγει, ένα παράθυρο αφήνει τον αέρα να περάσει, και ξαφνικά ένα δωμάτιο μοιάζει να κατοικείται από κάτι που δεν βρίσκεται πια εκεί.

το aeitos στρέφει το βλέμμα του σε αυτά τα ίχνη, στον τρόπο δηλαδή με τον οποίο ένας τόπος διαφυλάσσει τη μνήμη και στο πώς η παρουσία μας, ακόμη και περαστική, γίνεται μέρος της.

on patmos, there are moments when dusk resembles dawn.

as light dissolves the horizon, the island quietly unsettles our sense of direction. the sun seems to rise where it should set, and to set where it should rise.

aeitos inhabits this threshold: a space where performance becomes less an event than a passage from one way of seeing to another.

our journey begins not by finding our bearings, but by allowing them to disappear.

στην πάτμο υπάρχουν στιγμές που η αυγή μοιάζει με το σούρουπο.

καθώς το φως σβήνει τη γραμμή του ορίζοντα, το νησί ανατρέπει αθόρυβα την αίσθηση του προσανατολισμού μας. ο ήλιος μοιάζει να ανατέλλει εκεί όπου θα περίμενε κανείς να δύει και δύει εκεί όπου θα περίμενε να ανατείλει.

το aeitos γεννιέται μέσα σε αυτό το μεταίχμιο: έναν χώρο όπου η performance παύει να είναι απλώς ένα γεγονός αλλά μια μετάβαση του τρόπου με τον οποίο αντικρίζει κανείς τον κόσμο.

το ταξίδι μας δεν ξεκινά αναζητώντας τον προσανατολισμό μας, αλλά αφήνοντας αυτόν να εξαφανιστεί.

begins in patmos.

shaped by centuries of departures and returns, solitude and gathering, the island still asks those who arrive to slow down before it begins to reveal itself.

not because patmos is set apart from the world, but because it offers a way of looking that reaches far beyond its shores.

a view from patmos is never only a view of patmos. it is a way of thinking about our relationship to place, to one another, and to the world we share.

το aeitos ξεκινά στην Πάτμο. σμιλεμένο από αιώνες αναχωρήσεων και επιστροφών, από στιγμές μοναχικότητας αλλά και συναθροίσεων, το νησί εξακολουθεί να καλεί όσους φτάνουν να αφήσουν πίσω τους κάθε αίσθηση βιασύνης, πριν αρχίσει να τους αποκαλύπτεται.

και αυτό συμβαίνει όχι επειδή η Πάτμος βρίσκεται μακριά από τον κόσμο, αλλά επειδή προσφέρει έναν τρόπο να αντικρίζει κανείς τον κόσμο όπως εκτείνεται πολύ πέρα από τις ακτές της. από την Πάτμο δεν αντικρίζει κανείς μόνο την Πάτμο. είναι ένας τρόπος συλλογισμού της σχέση μας με τον τόπο γενικά, των σχέσεων μεταξύ μας αλλά και με τον κόσμο που μοιραζόμαστε.

we often think of performance as something to watch. perhaps it begins earlier than that. perhaps it begins with the simple decision to remain still long enough for attention to become an act in itself.

across patmos, small seats were carved directly into this rock. some overlook the sea, others face the changing light. they were places of retreat, where one sat in stillness long enough for the landscape to become more than a view.

aeitos is interested in creating these moments where landscape, body, and time meet, and where presence becomes a shared experience before anything is performed.

συχνά θεωρούμε πως η performance είναι συνυφασμένη μονάχα με τη στιγμή που την παρακολουθούμε. Ίσως όμως τελικά να ξεκινάει πολύ νωρίτερα από αυτή την στιγμή. αν παραμείνουμε ακίνητοι αρκετό χρόνο σε ένα συγκεκριμένο σημείο ίσως η προσοχή αυτή να αποτελεί πια μια πράξη performance από μόνη της.

σε όλη την Πάτμο, μικρά καθίσματα είναι σκαλισμένα απευθείας πάνω στους βράχους.
Κάποια έχουν θέα στη θάλασσα, άλλα κοιτούν προς το φως που αλλάζει. τα σημεία αυτά αποτέλεσαν χώρους απομόνωσης και περισυλλογής στους οποίους όποιος καθόταν ακίνητος αρκετά, τότε το τοπίο μεταμορφωνόταν σε κάτι περισσότερο από μια απλή θέα.

το aeitos στοχεύει στη δημιουργία αυτών των στιγμών όπου το τοπίο, το ανθρώπινο σώμα και ο χρόνος συναντώνται, και όπου η παρουσία καθεαυτή γίνεται μια κοινή εμπειρία πριν ακόμα ξεκινήσει οποιαδήποτε performance.
