🍋‍🟩When the lemon trees grow-Zoulfa Katouh
After quite a long gap,a book made me cry and my new way of reading,of slowly absorbing, pausing ,contemplating and being overwhelmed by the emotions made me take a long time in completing this book.I still am in a emotional overwhelmed frame of mind so I can just give reasons why it is an excellent read:
🍋‍🟩Syria has been a conflict country from decades ,a land first under dictatorship and then a civil war ,a war which has been going on for so long that we have all but forgotten what unimaginable horrors are still going on in war ravaged and conflict zones.
The resistance and gut wrenching horror which the people of the land with a beautiful civilization face on a daily basis, the hope which keeps them going ,which forces them to leave behind the land they call home , inspite of not wanting to,the loss of innocence and the trauma which they face is unthinkable for us!
I cried while reading this book, I who am so privileged and blessed to not have to worry about the basic needs of life,to have my family and loved ones safe and sound , would never have thought these simple everyday things and an ordinary life is a blessing denied to many, while we live blissfully ignorant or turn a blind eye, since it doesn't affect us.I hope and pray that conflict across the world (mostly based on greed, power and politics) is resolved because the sufferers are the ordinary people and mostly children, elderly, pregnant women and the disabled suffer the most.

Remnants of Partition-Aanchal Malhotra
The division of the Indian subcontinent leading to the formation of India and Pakistan was not merely the creation of two countries from a single country but also the cleaving of people suddenly and randomly. The tragedy was that even though religion was the main cause of the partition ,the similarities in the culture, whether it was the food, language, love for the land of one's birth remained the same on both the sides of the border even after the displacement/migration.
Aanchal Malhotra excellently brings out the emotions, the circumstances, the nostalgia and the stories of people who lived through one of the most horrific genocides of world history.
Her unique perspective of discussing the partition through the objects/things that the migrants brought with them while fleeing.Mundane daily objects acquire a new meaning when they become the foundation of stories ,times and memories of an era gone by.
This is a highly recommended read as it made me realise that what we take for granted can change at any time and that everything in this world, animate or inanimate has a story associated with it and unfortunately most stories are lost forever.

As someone who loves classics when I started rereading my favourites,I came across this abridged version of the much loved and well known Jane Austen 's Pride and Prejudice. On rereading this version, unfortunately I didn't feel the happiness or interest as I had felt when I read the other version. The very essence ,the language ,the clever ,witty replies and other nuances have been simplified to such an extent that it seems boring.I wonder if it would have been among my much loved books if I had read this version as my first Jane Austen read .
My question to all of you is do you feel that abridged versions of popular books are necessary in order to reach out to a larger reader group who might not necessarily be interested in good language or find delight in the style of writing?I agree children do need simplified versions (at times) and time does change our appreciation of the language and characters but a completely watered down version just changes the book (my opinion).Thank you for reading my rant ,as I couldn't accept that a favourite book could be turned into such an unreadable version.

Mrs.Simon is waiting and other stories-Dinesh Pathak and translated by Sneha Pathak
There are books which make you recognise certain characters immediately and which feel familiar. The essence of this book is human nature and its fragility.Every story captures everyday life snippets extremely well.Unfortunately couldn't read it in its original language but the excellent translation by Sneha is in a very reader friendly language and does manage to transfer the emotions and the nuances of the original language associated with the characters and story in a very clear manner. Each story , although short depicts the various human emotions very intensely. The stories capture the thoughts, the circumstances and behaviour of the protagonists profoundly. The emotions are after all universal.A wide range of emotions from nostalgia, desperation of a father with three daughters, society 's double standards, the precedence of money over love, sacrifice, selfishness all tend to make it a thought provoking read. Each story is a world in itself and I enjoyed reading such an anthology after a while
Thank you for sending this book@sneha pathak..tags in the comments..

A Gentleman in Moscow -Amor Towles
Consider being sentenced to life confinement in a building for simply being born in a class at the wrong time .Our protagonist Count Alexander Ilyich story begins in this manner at the onset ,being confined to the Hotel Metropol for the rest of his life by the Communist Government.
The Count is an intelligent, witty ,charming man who after being confined forms lifelong friendships within the world of the hotel, particularly with the 9 year old Nina who through the eyes of a precocious child decided to be his friend and through this most unlikely friendship changes his life completely. He discovers a different approach towards life and discovers a totally new world in the hotel itself.
The story is filled with humour, moments of self discovery , poignant moments and thoughts and many snippets of wisdom and insights.
The story is also one of how a person can adapt and utilise one's skills and knowledge to make the best of any circumstance .The journey of many years and the beauty of loyalty, friendship and circumstances is well etched throughout the story
A highly recommended delightful historical fiction especially for those who want to or like reading about the Russian communist revolution (described quite frequently here),the events during and after the Communist revolution from 1920-1960..⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 by @aeon725

Maybe You Should Talk to Someone -Lori Gottlieb⭐⭐⭐⭐.5
Talking to someone, especially about one's personal issues or pain isn't easy even if one is a therapist who goes for therapy, inspite of knowing that without showing one's vulnerability one cannot find a solution. The book is a memoir of the author and many of the insecurities, losses and confusion experienced by her as well as the description of how inspite of knowing we are in pain we rarely acknowledge that we need therapy or help .Many situations were very relatable and her style of writing was one which explained the most difficult emotions ina simple,at times hilarious and thought provoking manner.I felt a personal connect with this book as it came to me exactly when I needed it!
Some important insights from the book:
🌱Nobody is going to save you but they can help you save yourself
🌱In the best goodbyes there's always the feeling that there is something more to say
🌱 Uncertainty means possibility
🌱The four ultimate concerns are death, isolation, freedom and meaninglessness
🌱 Avoidance is almost always about fear,a simple way of coping without having to cope
🌱Our awareness about death helps us to live more fully
🌱The nature of life is to change and the nature of man is to resist change..continued in the comments... Highly recommended.

The joy of seeing your childhood books is incomparable as there are so many memories associated with it.Seeing a part of my childhood collection made me so nostalgic and feel so Blessed as I have always been sitting by books. Most has already been given away during shifting or damaged by silverfish so only few remain. My Mom's collection of Hindi books has also diminished similarly even though she still reads daily before going to sleep like she has always done throughout her life, something I aspire to do.
Qotd-Do you have any favourite childhood book or does any book take you back to your childhood?

Elena Knows-Clauda Pineiro
A profoundly moving story of an objectionable and outspoken elderly woman suffering from advanced Parkinson's who stubbornly persists against the odds in investigating the untimely death of her daughter.
🕸️The central plot takes place within the span of a single day in the present,an ardous journey to seek help interspersed with flashbacks. The whole story stems from a single decisive intervention by Rita (her daughter)which had devastating consequences for all of them.
🕸️The issues dealt with are universal -
The obstacles to a woman's right to control her own body
🕸️The myths and realities surrounding motherhood
🕸️The increasing challenges of an illand ageing body
🕸️ Sidelining of elderly and disabled people by the society at large
🕸️ Religion is a determining factor in conditioning
🕸️Elena's daily life /time is measured in pills and her physical disability limits her perspective
🕸️A few personal views-One can know something once one has experienced it in life, life is your greatest test.
🕸️The story is more about what Elena doesn't know as she assumes that she knew her daughter more than anyone and so knew how she would behave under any circumstance
and so decides to find her daughter 's killer
🕸️A small gesture / word of kindness can be very impactful, especially when the elderly and disabled are used to being ignored and rudely spoken to..
🕸️ People are united by their conditioed convinctions
🌼An excellently written book which touched my heart because it is made me much more aware (although I have seen milder forms) awareness is very important because aging is inevitable and especially all those who face such degenerating diseases face such difficulties daily and don't receive support because of lack of awareness .

Small Great Things-Jodi Picoult
This book.was an eye opener about the term 'Racist'and how racism is subtly present in the US and in various ways in our lives .
Before reading this book I never realised how privileged I am .,how people face unfair discrimination..The profound story of a African American woman ,her struggle in every aspect of life because of her colour and the re-examining of the non racist beliefs of her lawyer, who never realised how we are all part of the discrimination process.
🌗There are so many subtle ways in which racism is prevalent everywhere,be it the ordinary comments or simple behaviour.
🌗 Someone's misfortune is directly related to another's good fortune.
🌗 Prejudice goes both ways, some suffer which others profit
🌗Not everything that that is faced can be changed. But nothing can be changed until it is faced-James Baldwin
🌗 Equality and Equity are different and equity is what is needed for change.
🌗Racism is about power and who has access to it,whoever gets a boost because of their skin colour is a racist.
🌓True change will be when people get what they require to become the best version of themselves and successful while equality is giving people the same thing, which is not as effective as every single human is different.
🌗These were a few of the points which make me ponder ,there are many more which are equally if not more important to understand this topic from all angles .
🌗 Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are -Benjamin Franklin
🌓This book is highly recommended for every human because we are so conditioned that we need to understand and realise that we all must participate for the world to change ,we are all capable of making the world a better place, one person, one step at a time.
🌓A topic which is necessary to understand, because bias can be of various types,be it ace, religion, caste, educational qualification, language, regional, skin colour, food habits ,accent and much more more..
Qotd-Do you see discrimination based on any reason in your daily life?
