Restorative Representation. 1.) a change in representation that more accurately reflects the diverse and inclusive makeup of a space, community, society or ecosystem. 2.) opportunities of representation that create intersectional diversity within the demographics of identity that exist in a limited pool (utilized when full inclusion within an ecosystem is unable to be met).

At AFECT, we believe in the power of community and know the only way to improve upon it is if every voice is heard and accounted for. As we continue to build our community and AFECT ecosystem we are taking thoughtful and conscious action to create space for those who have never felt included, to build a platform that raises a collection of individual voices, and invest in the value of each person and what they have to offer.

Co-Founder, Eden Espinosa, reflects on the last year of AFECT, what she has learned, and how that will impact how she moves forward.
•
[Video Description: Eden is wearing bold black glasses with a soft pink lip. Her hair is down, and she is wearing a white tank top. She begins to speak. “Here we are. A year later, and, um, what a crazy ride this year has been. I’ve learned so much about myself, about our industry, about our country. About how I want to move in this world as a human. We have so much work to do. We had little baby steps that have made an impact in the ripple effect of things. My stance hasn’t changed. My convictions haven’t changed. I feel like I have more work to do in vetting who I want to align myself with artistically and personally, and professionally. I have to really dig to make sure that I am education and that I am vigilant in knowing the ins-and-outs of the financial structures and the inequities within that. So, uh, I have learned that I have a voice. I have learned that I have been called to speak up for people who don’t feel like they have a voice. And I’ve learned that I’m powerful and that the word no is powerful and can have an impact for the betterment of our community, and our world. And I feel called to empower others in that same way. So, here we are a year later. And we keep on walking. And we keep on working. Together. by @afectchange

At AFECT, we value meeting people where they are, and inviting them into conversation and shared space for mutual love, learning, and understanding. We believe in creating a space where people not only feel included but belong and know that their voice holds value. We believe in equity and equality and empowering people to find both.

Economic transparency is the organizational practice of making financial data available. This includes but is not limited to sharing annual budgets, salaries, profits, and income. As a society we have been conditioned to not share our individual wages with our colleagues to help companies conceal their distribution of funds and salary ranges, it’s also a means of control. Economic transparency is in our name and one of our core values because we believe transparency should be standard practice in every industry.

Radical empathy is an active choice in expressing compassion for and a willingness to understand yourself and/or others even if they are undeserving. To note, the amount in which you empathize is at the discretion of the giver and you should never overextend if you believe it will bring you harm. We value meeting people where they are and engaging in radical empathy to allow for greater connection and understanding.
