The happiest of happy birthdays to the #BwayBirthday boy, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1962, Dr. King celebrated his 33rd birthday attending the 100th performance of the original staging of #PurlieVictorious on Broadway starring the play’s author #OssieDavis in the titular role and his wife #RubyDee as #LutiebelleGussieMaeJenkins. Dr. King was actually quite the theatre fan, making an effort to take in as many Broadway and theatrical productions as possible whenever he spent time in New York - notably attending the original stagings of the musicals #MrWonderful, #SouthPacific and #DamnYankees. He was also on hand for #BroadwayAnswersSelma at the Majestic Theatre in April 1965 and took part in the fundraising benefit with his buddies and Civil Rights icons in their own rights #SammyDavisJr and #HarryBelafonte (he also hung out with and chatted up #NatalieWood at the stagedoor for “Broadway Answers Selma” - Dr. King stagedoored just like us). Just a glimpse into another side, an often not talked about but in my humble opinion incredibly cool side, of this special man who was, in part, just another Black Broadway and theatre lover. Happy #BroadwayBirthday, Rev. Dr. MLK, always and forever!

Swallow it down … What a Jagged Little Pill! 💊@alanis was on to something when she said that, as what a #JaggedLittlePill it is that’s playing right now at @broadwayinchicago ‘s #NederlanderTheatre. This is a show I’ve been excited for since I first heard it was in development, and you oughta know that it certainly did not disappoint. It touches on some heavy subject matter and forces the audience to stomach some serious jagged little pills, some very important and inconvenient truths about ourselves, our society and the way we interact with and treat each other - but I promise you that it feels so good once it’s swimming in your stomach 🙃 The story of “The Healys” and their journey towards personal healing and how they live and learn through all the loving, crying, losing, bleeding and screaming is delightful. The entire ensemble is one of the most solid of a Broadway road show I’ve ever seen. @heidiblick, with a voice that cannot conceivably be of this celestial plane and a skillful balance between comedic timing and raw emotion, anchors this production as matriarch “MJ Healy,” and the phenomenal talent that is @jadeemcleod is something to see as “Jo.” @the.laurenchanel is adorable as “Frankie,” the Healys “unprodigal daughter,” and @dillon_scott_klena puts his own stamp on and is captivating as the “Captain America” Golden Child and Older Brother “Nick” (a role he inherits from his own elder sibling derek_klena). Also, @rishigolani_ is definitely a mythical bird of flame and not a third-rate city in his gorgeous interpretation of “Phoenix.” The set and video projections are visually stunning, and the unique choreography that fits so well with the show’s concept and pop rock score and is breathtaking. If you want to know more about my experience and thoughts, you can check out my “JLP” review - up on my website now at www.PaigeEight.com - but “all I really want” and recommend is to get to the Nederlander Theatre before April 23rd to take in @jaggedlittlepill while it’s still here with @broadwayinchicago (and then call me in the morning, a.k.a. hit up my comments section, and tell me how you feel). But then again, what do I know - I’m “not the doctor.” 😉

Attention! @roundaboutnyc ‘s #ASoldiersPlay National Tour, brilliantly executed under the command of legendary theatre artist / director @iamkennyleon, is one of the most dutiful, riveting and entirely excellent pieces of theatre you will ever experience. And that’s no Bravo Charlie. Read all about it in my review up on my website www.PaigeEight.com now - and be sure to march on down to the CIBC Theatre where “A Soldier’s Play” is playing @broadwayinchicago through April 16th before this astounding work deploys to the next tour stop.

Paige Eight P.S. And did I come fully dressed for the theatre #BroadwayBounding as one of the Fort Neal Army Bas privates in the ensemble in my @stevemadden fatigues (bestowed upon me by @beingdinalinne)? Affirmative! That would be a big “Roger That!” 😉 🪖🧑🏽‍✈️

You, thinking I didn’t #BroadwayBound as @maddisondenault as #KathrynMerteuil in @kokandyprods ‘ production of @cruelmusical ? Now, we’ll, that’s just cruel 👿 Of course I had to show love to one of my favorite productions with one of my favorite go-to cast recordings (the #OffBroadway cast recording is my 90s pop heaven) and dress up in a black suit and some red lace just like the Kathryn costume in Kokandy (one of the best theatre companies in the city, by far) ‘s imagining of “Intenciones Crueles.” Also, my #MusicalCrushMonday @maddisondenault is simply too cool for prep school (I mean, just look at her) and is an exceptional talent, so any chance to emulate her is an honor / must be seized 🙃 Love ya’ll X Love, The Marcia 🤬 Brady of the Upper East Side

Happy #BroadwayBlackHistory Month ya’ll! Do me a favor - for this Black History Month, go read at least one play written by a Black woman (and extra extra points if it’s a play written by a Black woman about a Black woman or Black women). I’ve dropped you some suggestions here of some of my favorite plays by and about Black women - but from Katori Hall’s “The Blood Quilt” to Lydia R. Diamond’s “Toni Stone,” Ntozake Shange’s classic “For Colored Girls …,” I’ve got a ton more recommendations (and trust me, that’s not even scratching the surface and including some more under the radar pieces and playwrights). Let me know if you plan to read a play and which one you’re going to delve into!

Just a bit more than a month after the 20th of May (otherwise known as “Eliza Doolittle Day”), did I have the most fun and one of the best nights out at the theatre I’ve ever had attending the #BroadwayInChicago Opening Night of the @lctheater production of “My Fair Lady” … and did I wear head to toe floral (a floral dress and earrings from @sheinofficial @shein_us and some classic thrifted green floral heels and a literal flower basket purse courtesy of the fashion maven that is @14th.st.vintage) #BroadwayBounding as Miss Eliza’s basket of flowers in doing so? ABSO-BLOOMIN-LUTELY! 🌸🌷🌺 The touring production of @lctheater ‘s @myfairladybway directed by @bartlett.sher was beautiful. It is one of the most aesthetically pleasing shows I’ve ever witnessed and so incredibly well-crafted, just like the finest bouquet from the best Camden Market florist shop. This take on this tale is is classic but in many ways smells fresh like new cuttings and leaves more room for the story to blossom and reach its full potential. Of course, seeing such a beautifully cast diverse group of 1912 London inhabitants with this piece, lead fearlessly by the most disarmingly talented and dazzling #WOC @shereen_ahmed as the strong female protagonist, made this staging all the more enchanting. Further thoughts and a more in-depth review will be published on my webpa(i)ge, but know that this imagining of “My Fair Lady” is very highly-recommended for anyone, from the budding performing arts enthusiast to those with deeply-rooted love for Golden Age musicals, looking to engage in some sweet, bright, warm, boldly-colored, amazing theatre this summer. Be sure if you want to see this #FirstNationalTour production before it plants itself in the next scheduled city, make sure you MOVE YOUR BLOOMIN’ AR*E and get yourself down to the @cadillacpalacetheater before July 10th! Thanks so much #BwayInChicago for having me and for the most loverly time! 💐👒

“No one really knows how the parties get to ‘Yes.’ The pieces that are sacrificed in every game of chess. We just assume that it happens. And no one else is in the room where it happens.” - Aaron Burr, @hamiltonmusical @hamiltonwestend

I’ve had a themed room pretty much my entire life. When I was a baby, I had a “Noah’s Ark” nursery. At age 2, the decor transitioned to Disney Princesses. When I was 5, me moved into a new house and I got a 90s fever dream of neon hearts and geometric prints. Then, upon turning 8, we redecorated based on my favorite film and literally turned my room into “Oz.” For my 13th birthday, we did another overhaul and I became the new proud resident of a pink and black Old Hollywood glam palace. I entered college, and I got a Japanese cherry blossom - themed room at home and a #TeamJacob / Twilight-themed dorm room. We moved again, and I got a Purple - Periwinkle - Zebra Print refuge with a canopy bed and fairy lights. My room has always expressed me, my personality, and where I am on my journey. So I knew when I bought my home 4 years ago, I wanted to continue this tradition of making my space reflect me at my core and who I am; and I knew I wanted to pay homage to the greatest love of my life and one of the biggest parts of my identity - #Theatre and #Broadway. But one of the coolest things about every time I’ve designed / redesigned a theme bedroom for myself, no one else has seen the process. No one has seen the magic that happens in transitioning my space, all the effort put in and the precious memories being made. No one else has ever been in “the room where it happened.” And, honestly, I think that’s sort of neat. But now that it’s done, I’m officially raising the curtain on this production (just as theatrical as I am) and inviting you all into #TheBroadwayBedroom! If you want to see the entire Grand Tour of my newly renovated space, a true immersive experience and sanctuary of the dramatic arts, check it out on my webpa(i)ge at www.PaigeEight.com. No one else was in the room where it happened - but now you’re here, and I’m so glad you are. Welcome.

To be young, gifted and black. Sitting in front of the house that has allowed me to be, allowed us to be, despite bigotry’s best efforts. Sitting on the steps of The Hansberry Home at 6140 S. Rhodes. Reading the play “A Raisin In The Sun,” the first play by a Black woman ever performed on #Broadway, that was inspired by this house and the Supreme Court case it sparked; and the Pulitzer Prize - winning play “Clybourne Park” that was inspired by that one. Inhaling the prolific words of my #MondayMuse, Ms. Lorraine Hansberry, on this hallowed ground. In front of the home that raised her. The home that challenged Chicago’s racist restricted covenants. Where bricks were thrown through the windows narrowly missing an 8-year-old Lorraine as she was trying to grow up. The home that, in spite of white mobs’ protests, hosted the likes of Duke Ellington, W.E.B. DuBois,
Paul Robeson, Jesse Owens, and Langston Hughes (the same Langston Hughes who wrote the poem “A Dream Deferred” that would inspire the title of Lorraine Hansberry’s masterpiece and most celebrated work). Oh what a lovely, precious dream indeed.

My newest review of @timelinetheatre ‘s #Relentless presented at the @goodmantheatre is up on my website. It was a powerful work to watch, and this piece was a powerful one to write. Go to my webpa(i)ge and have a look at what I was able to conceptualize about this play - www.PaigeEight.com.
