My Meeting with General Ibrahim Gbadamosi Babangida.

I journeyed from Abuja to Minna, the country home of the former Head of State of our dear nation. It was a good day to travel given that Wednesday, September 27th, 2023 was a public holiday.

I received a warm welcome and it was a great moment with the former president. For people like him, the list of guests is endless, so the earlier the better. But I was an expectant guest.

The General remarked after seeing me "Afeez how are you and how was your journey"?. I replied with a gentle voice as I looked at the floor in humility. It was a journey between excitement and extreme caution. Who would not want to be coordinated in front of such an eminent personality?

He communicated like a civilian and joked with me. He said some beautiful words and I must say, he is a living encyclopedia.

"Afeez I heard you are very Hardworking and Honest", keep it up, the General said of me. What could be more soothing than such a word?

I then explained that I am on a mission to be a Global voice for children, educating parents on child development trends and serving my Dear Nation in the Education space. The General said, Afeez, you have what it takes, just be Patient. He said Nigerians want immediate answers to everything but patience is what is needed for everlasting success. He reminded me of how he made Babs Fafunwa a minister of Education without knowing him. He was only appointed based on his good works. So, Afeez go on, the world will celebrate you.

In his final remarks, he told me, Afeez, you are a big tree, you can make a forest just don't stop pushing. He cited Paul Kagame the Rwanda President as an example. That one person can start the educational revolution and he sees me as a big tree.

I am thankful for the opportunity and I pray the General to live long in good health.

May we surpass their success and create a better and more habitable nation for children and the entire populace. by @afeez_abdulrasak

4 Emotions Children Struggle to Name

Children experience anger, sadness, fear, and jealousy long before they can explain them properly.

Before labelling or punishing the behaviour, pause. Stay calm, acknowledge the feeling, and help the child name it.

Emotional regulation begins with emotional language.

WHY DO SOME CHILDREN RARELY FALL SICK?

It may not be luck or an expensive “immune booster.” Good sleep, nutritious food, vaccination, proper hygiene, safe exposure to nature, and a nurturing, low-stress home all support a child’s developing immune system.

Healthy immunity is built through everyday habits by parents and adults around children.

Which habit needs greater attention in your home?

Nigeria at 66: Where Is the Child in Our Progress?

As Nigeria marks 66 years of independence, we must ask: where is the child in our national progress?

My experience in American early-learning settings has shown me what becomes possible when children receive quality education, nutritious meals, safety and opportunity regardless of their family’s socioeconomic status.

Children learn to love a nation that protects, includes and invests in them. The future we desire can only become possible when the child of today is placed at the centre of national planning.

A nation that neglects its children mortgages its future.

WHO IS THE CHILD SAFE WITH?

The recently reported child sex case reminds us that abuse has no gender, and being a parent is not an automatic guarantee of safety.

This is not about blaming men or women. It is about protecting children through boundaries, accountability and attentive listening.

No adult should be above safeguarding.

Toxic Parenting Habits

Toxic parenting is not about one imperfect moment; it is a repeated pattern of shame, threats or dismissal. We can correct children firmly without humiliating them.

Bedwetting Is Not Bad Behaviour: Protect the Child, Treat the Condition

Bedwetting is not bad behaviour and humiliation is not treatment.

Children experiencing enuresis need privacy, reassurance and appropriate support, not ridicule, punishment or public exposure.

Enuresis can be managed. A child’s dignity must always be protected.

During enrolment, some parents focus on the class they want rather than the class their child is developmentally ready for.

However, readiness is not determined by age, comparison or parental ambition alone. When children face expectations they are not yet ready to manage, they may experience persistent frustration, anxiety, reduced confidence and dislike for school.

Parents must listen to professional assessments. Schools must communicate honestly, while teachers should provide individualised support without labelling or shaming the child.

The goal is not the highest class—it is the right class: where the child can learn, belong and thrive.

Have you ever disagreed with a school’s placement recommendation for your child?
