ADD version here, watch the full performance of Believer in the bio link <3

Two women parallel play their way through the many dimensions of reality, fantasy, altered universe, and dream; giving the audience a tour of a shared psyche built from contemporary constructs. Instead of succumbing to the demands of these environments, a desire to continue drives the women to transform their facades in order to uphold the mysteries of their powerful, untouchable, and unknowable interiors. Survival creating the visionary. Action generating pleasure. Exploring the incessant act of being man-made. As Woah Vicky once tweeted, “What shall I render”.

Born out of extensive research of how contemporary existentialism is collectively expressed through social media sites, Believer is a meditation on what it means to pass through the rabbit hole, and continue living once you reach the other side. Believer is an exhibition of choice–choice that is both specific and unoriginal–displayed by the mirroring of two bodies moving through the same, though not always exact, passages and actions. There are no new ideas, and this reality can be both comforting and disturbing, depending on the day.

The two women dress alike, listen to the same music, and have a shared body language built out of acceptable iterations of self-expression according to social norms and media, but underneath another state of being smolders. Is it ever fully revealed? Is the truth ever known? Is there any growth over time? Is one state more real than another? The two women shift from the personal to the public to the haunted to the ceremonial to the ethereal, unconcerned about what is occurring beyond the present moment. They are not saved, they do not want to be saved, and they will live to tell the tale.

Believer is a foundational work, laying the grounds and logic for this current era of making. It took a very long time to make because I was reworking how I make whilst making it. Alongside the piece itself, I explored the exercise of branding–through original and plagiarized content–using social media as the tool it has turned into to promote the work throughout its year and a half process. The next project is underway, the universe expands.

YOU ALREADY KNOW HER NAME Molly Elizabeth Ross posted some rehearsal clip on her stories doing I don’t even know what but obviously it was cool as shit in 2022-3 ?? And I tucked that information away in the back of my brain thinking, “this person can actually dance. Like MOVE dance. Plus she looks like she enjoys doing it.” Thank god for the dance thirst trap cuz I literally don’t know who else could be pulling the rabbit out of the hat in this sleight of hand I’ve named Believer. She’s charm, she’s grace, she gives extremely good and versatile face, and the work wouldn’t exist without her. If for no other reason get yr tix to see Molly Ross be talented af, duh.
