This week, we hosted a CAS Film Screening of “The Trials of Winnie Mandela”, an @ichikowitz.foundation and African Oral History Archive documentary series, streaming on @NetflixSA, examining the life of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. Winnie was one of South Africa’s most consequential political figures and a central leader in resistance and struggle, with the film focusing on her legacy, leadership, and political marginalization.

A panel followed the screening to discuss how African women leaders are recognized and how gender shapes revolution:

🎥Joining us virtually was Swati Dlamini-Mandela, the granddaughter of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.

🎙️Dr. Panashe Chigumadzi is an award-winning writer and Assistant Professor of African History at Brandeis University. As rapporteur for the African Union’s Committee of Experts, she drafted the AU Framework for Reparations.

🎙️Tori Ichikowitz is an award-winning South African filmmaker, director, and producer based between Los Angeles and South Africa. For Tori, film is a tool for real-world change. She makes work that challenges audiences to question what they accept and carry those conversations into their own lives and communities.

🎙️Dr. Marius Kothor is an Assistant Professor of Studies of Women, Gender, and Sexuality at Harvard University. Dr. Kothor is a historian of 20th-century West Africa whose work examines the political and economic lives of Togolese women.

Visit our Youtube channel for a short clip of the conversation, visit the @thetrialsofwinniemandela page to stay updated on screenings, and stay connected to our network at africa.harvard.edu.

CAS Student Funding supports Harvard students as they pursue meaningful research, projects, internships, and other learning opportunities across the African continent. We are highlighting two students who completed CAS-funded internships.

This summer, Adaolisa Mba ’27 (Harvard College) received funding to complete an internship with On The Move e.V. in Kenya, a nonprofit organization dedicated to building capacity in mental health. Through partnerships with universities, hospitals, and community-based organizations, On The Move e.V. supports mental-health education, research, and the development of community-based initiatives. It is also one of five CAS-funded internship programs.

During her internship, Adaolisa engaged directly with mental-health work at both the community and clinical levels. She gained insight into how mental-health initiatives are developed and implemented in partnership with local communities and healthcare institutions, while learning more about the role of education, research, and collaboration in strengthening mental-health services.

Applications for the next round of Student Africa Fund opportunities are now open, with the first deadline on October 15, 2026. Learn more and apply at africa.harvard.edu/funding. taken in Kenya by @africaharvard
