DAR TO MARK TEN YEARS WITHOUT PIONEERING ARCHITECT BEDA AMULI WITH A WALK THROUGH HIS LEGACY

Families, architects, students, and the public are invited to a dawn walk through the city's architectural landmarks on 11 July 2026 — honouring the man who helped shape Dar es Salaam's built identity.

DAR ES SALAAM — On the morning of Saturday, 11 July 2026, the streets of Dar es Salaam will serve as both monument and memory. The Beda Amuli 10 Year Memorial Architectural Walk — subtitled "Walking Through a Legacy" — will bring together architects, urban planners, students, historians, and members of the general public for a guided dawn walk connecting key landmarks that bear the imprint of one of Tanzania's most significant architectural figures.

The event, organised by the late architect's family in collaboration with the architectural association of Tanzania (AAT) under the theme "Designing Tanzania: Architecture for People, Place, and Purpose", begins at the Old Boma Building, one of Dar es Salaam's most storied colonial-era structures, with registration and T-shirt distribution from 6:00 AM, a formal opening ceremony at 6:30 AM, and the walk itself commencing at 7:00 AM sharp.

“Beda Amuli did not just design buildings. He designed civic space — places where Tanzanians could work, learn, trade, and gather. This walk is our way of making sure the city he helped build continues to tell his story," says Architect T'Chawi, President of AAT.

The Route: A City Reads Itself Aloud - Departing from the Old Boma Building at 7:00 AM, walkers will proceed through a carefully curated sequence of sites. Stop 1 takes the group to the Kilimanjaro / Hyatt area at 7:10 AM, followed by Stop 2 at the IFM Building at 7:25 AM, and Stop 3 at the National Cooperative Building at 7:40 AM.

The walk concludes at Kariakoo Market, the commercial heartbeat of the city, at 8:05 AM, with public reflections, media engagement, and a formal closing at 8:30 AM.

Participants are advised to wear the official "Walk of Legacy" T-shirts and caps, available for purchase at TSh 20,000 and TSh 10,000 respectively.

Contributions and support from the public are warmly welcomed.
