I am proud to share that my work has been included in Surreal Salon 18. This year's exhibition was juried by @swoonhq, and I'm thrilled to be part of a dynamic collection of pop-surrealist and lowbrow art.

You can see the full artist list and preview via the @juxtapozmag link in my bio. If you're in Louisiana, I'd love to see you at the opening night on Jan 2nd at @brgallery

“Untitled I” is more than a photograph, it's a window into forgotten histories and contested landscapes. Captured by our documentary team during fieldwork in the rural South, this black-and-white image juxtaposes interior domestic quiet with the raw power of the land outside, a place still owned and tended by Black families whose stories often go untold.

This photograph represents a quiet form of resistance. While today's political climate leans toward censorship and erasure, our work aims to preserve voices and spaces too often left out of the American narrative. The window isn’t just a compositional frame, t’s a metaphor. A vantage point between inherited limitations and expansive possibility.

Shot in grayscale to evoke memory and reflection, the image strips away distraction and asks you to consider your relationship with freedom, land, and legacy.

Proceeds from each print help fund our independent documentary project, an urgent, visual archive of Black Southern life, land, and lineage.

Own a piece of the story. Invest in the truth.

Introducing Gee’s Bend: Welcome To The Hole, a stunning documentary that offers an insider’s look at the soul of a rural Black community in Alabama—most known for its legacy of quilting, resistance, and cultural brilliance.

🎬 From Director/Producer Phillip Loken:

"Hello everyone, my name is Phillip Loken, Director and Producer of Gee's Bend: Welcome To The Hole, a documentary film giving an insider’s perspective on the nuances that have shaped a rural Black community in Alabama, most known for its rich, intergenerational legacy of quilting.

This film matters to me because Black people have historically not been at the forefront of telling our own stories, and this film is the antithesis of that statement with a Gee's Bend descendant, X aka Brian Xsavior Pettway, as the Executive Producer."

Pop Box Gallery, The Art Chose Me & Queen Street Magic Boat present:

.

Death Planted a Garden, on view September 6 - October 20, at Queen Street Magic Boat.

.

.

Queen Street Magic Boat was conceived in the historic home, garden, and studio space of artist, organizer, and dive instructor Catherine Edgerton as “a surrealist hub for building and sustaining visionary community connections through water, the arts and wild imagination."

.

Death Planted a Garden is a uniquely immersive art experience featuring 21 Triangle-area visual, sound, literary, and multidisciplinary artists exploring their lived experiences of loss through activation of the entire property: the house, outbuildings and the land. “If death is a moment, what follows is timeless and fluid. In these post-mortem ecologies, we plant orchards, we fall off wagons, we fuel spaceships, we follow mirages, we float on life rafts. The harvest is at once devastating and gloriously expansive”.

.

.

.

📆 Opening Reception September 6, 2024

📍406 N Queen Street, Durham, NC 27701

This weekend, the @geesbendwtth documentary team is headed back out to Gee's Bend, AL for our next major production date for "Gee's Bend: Welcome To The Whole (fiscally sponsored by @southerndocfund).

We had a great time amongst the community last year during the #AiringOfTheQuilts festival ( @fqb.legacy, @gees_bend, @visitgeesbend, @soulsgrowndeepfoundation ), but this time around we'll be documenting the community's homecoming celebration May Day.

As the filmmaking process has progressed, the vision of the documentary became more refined and we wanted to share an updated version of our brief pitch deck.

A full detailed version of the pitch deck (which includes work samples, budget, visual inspiration, impact strategy, why this film is different from previously released Gee's Bend-related films, etc.) is available upon request, but this post includes the log line for the film, the synopsis, a bio on one of the film's main subjects@X_TheArtist, and select team bios.

We deeply appreciate the support we've received so far from individuals and organizations! Whether financial contributions or other forms of support, it is all appreciated; thank you!

If you would like to financially contribute to the production of this film, we are accepting donations (all tax-deductible) for funding through checks, wire transfers (donation forms available upon request), and a PayPal link where you can choose to make a one-time, monthly, or annual donation.

Feel free to DM @geesbendwtth or email us (GeesBendWTTH@gmail.com) if you're interested in seeing the full pitch deck, donating, sponsoring the film, or have any other related inquiries.

Click the links in the @geesbendwtth bio to sign up for our newsletter, make PayPal donation, follow our Facebook page, and visit the documentary's webpage.

Thank you for the support! by @afro_daakye

It Ain't All Black and White is coming to Durham!! This deliberately curated collection of black and white photographs will be hosted by the DAG Truist Gallery at 120 Morris St. Durham, NC 27701 April 19, 2024 through June 6, 2024.

Please join us on April 19th at 6pm to celebrate the occasion!!

Statement:

Black people are often asked to shrink their complex emotions into two categories, joy and pain; sitting high on joy as a reaction against the impact of colonization or burdened by pain that is exploited as the focal element in galleries, news, and social media. It Ain’t All Black and White is a photography exhibition that encourages us to consider emotions such as serenity, apprehension, yearning, and more. Captured by 11 dynamic photographers dedicated to documenting the fullness and complexity of Black life, this exhibition offers each of us an opportunity to see ourselves with renewed attention.
