For Sound In Motion by @afroconex, I was invited to interpret music from Asante IV through my own movement and creative perspective.

Here I take you inside Sbhujwa interpretation of “Ayo Yo” by Mörda and Chronical Deep and share a little about what I heard in the music and how it shaped my movement. This is a duo prepared interpretation piece (@khilibo_jack), unfortunately my dance partner wasn't available for the shoot to interpret the beautiful work with me.

This is what I heard in “Ayo Yo.”

From the first beat drop of Ayoba James Brown, I was intrigued. Then around 0:21, when the layered instrumentals kicked in, I was sold. By 1:00, with the rhythm fully taking shape, I was completely locked in. And when the lyrics dropped at 2:23, that was it.

What I heard was layers. Different rhythms and sounds constantly giving me something new to respond to. And that’s what I wanted my movement to reflect.

For me, that’s the beauty of AfroHouse. It gives me the freedom to pull from the different styles that influence how I move, while letting the music lead.

What did I hear in this song? This! Stay tuned to see what other movement artists heard in Asante IV

Sound In Motion.

This project is my love letter to AfroHouse music and Mörda’s Asante IV.

I’ve been a fan of Mörda’s music for years. There’s something about the rhythms, melodies and layers in his music that deeply connects with me and excites me to dance.

As I listened to Asante IV, I started imagining how different movement artists might hear and interpret the music in their own unique ways. That idea became Sound In Motion.

I’m opening the project with my own movement interpretation. Over the next four weeks, I’ll share interpretations from different movement artists, each bringing their own style, influences and relationship with the music.

Different artists. Different movement. Different interpretations of sound.

When we launched Comeca, our first collaboration with DJ Vado Poster @vado_poster_mr2em1 we threw a party for the dancers in Luanda—and Vado was the headlining DJ.

The energy was crazy. The dancers were excited to dance, celebrate, and of course get a photo with one of the producers behind so many of the beats that move Angola.

Now, we sit down with the man behind the music.
