What if children could understand nutrition through superheroes they already love learning about?

At our Cincinnati Summer Cooking Camp, we introduced the Healthy Plate Heroes, a fun and interactive way to teach children about food, nutrition, and the important roles different foods play in keeping their bodies healthy.

Meet our four heroes:

1) Captain Carbo – The Energy Hero: Carbohydrates provide the energy children need to play, learn, and stay active. Foods like rice, potatoes, and pasta help fuel their day.

2) Mighty Muscle – The Strength Hero: Protein helps children grow, build strong muscles, and repair body tissues. We explored protein sources such as chicken, fish, eggs, and beans.

3) Rainbow Ranger – The Colorful Hero: Fruits and vegetables provide vitamins, minerals, fiber, and other nutrients that support growth and overall health. The more variety on the plate, the more nutrients children can explore.

4) Captain Hydro – The Hydration Hero: Water helps regulate body temperature, transport nutrients, and keep the body functioning properly.

The learning didn't stop with identifying the heroes. Through hands-on cooking, our young participants explored ingredients, prepared balanced meals, and connected what they learned about nutrition to the food on their plates.

This is what food and nutrition education looks like at Afromeals Foundation; making nutrition understandable, engaging, and practical so children can develop healthy habits and cooking skills they can carry into everyday life.

Because when children understand why their bodies need different foods, they're better equipped to make informed food choices.

A church space became a place for children to discover what they could do with food.

During our Cincinnati Summer Cooking Camp at St. James Episcopal Church, we brought free, hands-on food and nutrition education to children in our community.

Why does this matter? Because not every child has the opportunity to learn how to prepare a balanced meal, understand what different foods do for their bodies, or develop cooking skills they can carry into adulthood.

Through partnerships with community organizations like St. James Episcopal Church, we are able to bring these opportunities closer to the children and families we serve.

Every child deserves the knowledge and confidence to make informed food choices, and that's part of the work we are committed to at Afromeals Foundation.

It’s Wednesday evening. There’s rice in the pantry, some vegetables in the fridge and chicken that needs to be used. Now what?

That moment is one reason the recipes we teach matter.A recipe can check every nutrition box and still not be very useful if it requires hard-to-find ingredients, special equipment, complicated techniques or more time than someone realistically has.

At our Senior Cooking Class, we prepared brown fried rice with mixed vegetables and chicken breast. But the real value of that meal wasn’t learning to make that exact plate.

It was learning how everyday ingredients can come together: a grain, vegetables and a source of protein. Change the vegetables, use what you already have, choose another protein, adjust the seasoning etc. The meal can change while the basic idea stays with you.

That’s the kind of food education we want to provide at Afromeals Foundation, skills that still make sense when there’s no instructor standing beside you and no recipe laid out on the table.

Because the real test of a cooking class is what happens in your kitchen afterward.

Eat a balanced meal” sounds simple. But what does that actually look like on a plate?

At our senior cooking class, we took that advice out of the abstract and into the kitchen.

On the menu: brown fried rice with mixed vegetables and chicken breast. One meal gave us a practical way to talk about bringing carbohydrates, vegetables and lean protein together without making cooking complicated.

And then everyone made it themselves.

That last part matters to how we teach at Afromeals Foundation. Instead of only talking about nutrition, we use cooking to make the information tangible.

Participants can see the ingredients, prepare the meal, taste the result and leave knowing, I can make this at home.

A balanced meal doesn't have to be elaborate.

Sometimes it starts with understanding what belongs on the plate, and knowing what to do with it once you get into the kitchen.

Who do we serve? Our seniors are part of that answer.

As we get older, what we eat continues to matter, but so does having practical ways to prepare meals that work for everyday life.

That’s why during Healthy Aging Month, we spent time in the kitchen with seniors at Forest Park Branch Library. We cooked together, talked about nutrition and prepared a balanced meal they could realistically make at home.

At Afromeals Foundation, food education isn't something we believe should stop at childhood or adulthood. We serve people at different stages of life because our relationship with food continues to change as we do.

For our seniors, that means creating opportunities to keep learning, cooking and making informed choices about the foods they eat.

Because good nutrition matters at every age.

We have a few more opportunities to cook, learn, and connect before the year comes to an end!

From our Family Cooking Class in October to our Diabetes Awareness Cooking Class in November and Winter Kids Cooking Camp in December, there’s still plenty happening at Afromeals Foundation.

And we could use a few extra hands along the way. 🙌🏾

If you enjoy giving back, working with people, or simply want to support what we are doing in the community, we would love to have you volunteer with us.
