🎉I’m honored to be featured in Cincinnati Magazine as part of its City of Immigrants series, sharing what it has been like to build Afromeals as an immigrant.

When I moved to the U.S., I never imagined that my passion for sharing African and Caribbean cuisine would grow into a business, a nonprofit, and a platform to bring people together through food.

This feature isn’t just about me. It’s about every immigrant who has dared to dream, work hard, and create opportunities for others.

Through Crossover Community Development (COCD), we are proud to partner with community advocates, including Dayton’s Equity Center, Miami Valley Meals, Catholic Social Services of the Miami Valley, Ohio University, and Afromeals to create pathways that support New Americans and strengthen inclusive communities, advancing the mission of a thriving Welcome Dayton!

Together, we are building access to opportunity through programs such as the Healthcare Bridge Program and the Forklift Certification Program. These initiatives strengthen English language skills, provide career-specific training. Together it is our honor to help foster confidence and job readiness for long-term success.

As part of Immigrants Feed America, Chef Gabi Odebode is bringing a curated plant-forward dining experience celebrating traditional West African cuisine through flavor, culture, and storytelling! The Food Network’s West African recipe developer and an Ohio media expert on Afro-Caribbean cuisine, chef Gabi will prepare a vegan feast of West African favorites, sponsored by the BIPOC Food and Farming Network. Proceeds from the meal will benefit AfroMeals Foundation’s work with Miami Valley Meals. Chef Gabi and Afromeals Foundation were recently honored for partnering with Miami Valley Meals to prepare culturally appropriate meals for Haitian and African refugee communities in the region.

2025 COMMUNITY PARTNER AWARD: MIAMI VALLEY MEALS AND AFROMEALS FOUNDATION

When we learned that refugee clients would permanently lose eligibility for monthly federal food benefits in October 2025, we reached out to community partners. Miami Valley Meals, already a valued partner through their chef prepared meals for our Choice Food Pantry, stepped forward, collaborating with Chef Gabi Odebode, founder of the AfroMeals Foundation, to donate culturally appropriate meals for African refugee families in Dayton. This partnership not only meets an urgent need but also honors the deep connection between food, identity, and comfort, showing families that they are valued.

If you feed a person, they will eat for a day, but if you teach them how to cook, you empower them to reconnect with their culture. 🍛

@afromeals.foundation sees food as a tool for dignity, health, and long-term resilience. It was established by Chef Gabi Odebode in 2025 with a mission to fight food insecurity. Starting this non-profit was personal for Chef Gabi. “Afromeals Foundation was inspired by both my childhood experiences and my work as a chef,” she says. “Growing up in Ghana, I witnessed communities and children living with severe food insecurity, often scraping together whatever they could find to eat. That experience stayed with me.”

After immigrating to the United States as a child where she was unfamiliar with the cuisine, Chef Gabi faced food insecurity herself. It was then that she began to learn how deeply culture, familiarity, and dignity are tied to food. She continued to witness this experience into adulthood, seeing families and children going to bed hungry, not knowing how to use the ingredients they receive at food pantries. This shaped how hands-on cooking and food education became such a critical part of the Afromeals Foundation’s work. They carry out their mission through a meal distribution system providing culturally relevant meals, ingredient boxes with recipes, and food and nutrition education through cooking classes for underserved communities.

The Afromeals Foundation partners with food pantries, community organizations, schools, and service providers to reach families in need in the Cincinnati and Dayton area. They don’t just work to provide communities with food, but to empower them by equipping them with the knowledge they need to make meals that taste like home.

You can get involved with the foundation by volunteering at cooking events, helping pack ingredient boxes, supporting fundraising efforts, or donating funds or in-kind resources to help sustain their programs.

Together with @miamivalleymeals and @afromeals.foundation we spent the day cooking up a culturally meaningful Congolese meal for our Dayton community👫🍱

@miamivalleymeals sends out over 4,000 chef-prepared meals every week. They believe in dignity, inclusivity, and really taking the time to explore what comfort food looks like for the different people who call this city home. Even got to learn a couple things from @chefgabio 👩🏽‍🍳😹

Chef Gabi’s @afromealsfoundation started as an extension her cooking classes and signature spices, and has grown into a mission to share culinary education and culturally meaningful meals with families facing food insecurity. And even though this dish is Congolese, it’s the kind of comfort meal anyone would love.

🎉Catering for @carrythemministries Gala.

This weekend we had the pleasure of catering for an amazing Organization @carrythemministries . They are based in Jos Nigeria where they help save Infants and mothers who are malnourished and do not have the means to feed themselves. They have saved many infants and mothers.

It was a pleasure to join forces with them this week to raise money for the organization to expand this capacity to rescue more infants and mothers.
