Det 855 cadets recently had the opportunity to lead teams through obstacle courses and paintball at the Officer Development Course Extended Training Exercise. These activities gave cadets hands-on experience in leadership, effective decision-making, and communication, while also practicing skills such as small-unit tactics and TCCC.

Events like the ODC ETE provide crucial training opportunities, posturing our cadets for success at Field Training and future leadership roles.

Week 4's LLAB gave our cadets the opportunity to develop and apply vital expeditionary skills, including small unit tactics, TCCC and first-aid, identifying and reporting IED and UXOs, and operational security. Putting these skills into practice reinforced our cadet’s abilities to lead, communicate, and work as a team in challenging environments.

This LLAB gave cadets their first experiences with these skills, preparing them to put them to the test at the ODC ETE.

Building stronger Airmen, one workout at a time.

Det 855 cadets put in the work at early morning PT to prepare for the upcoming Physical Fitness Assessment. Physical fitness builds discipline, endurance, and readiness required for future active-duty service.

GMC Academy:

GMC Academy gave our cadets a closer look at Det 855’s auxiliaries and extracurricular activities, including Honor Guard, Arnold Air Society, and Friends of Special Warfare.

Honor Guard challenged our GMC cadets with a drill-down, giving them hands-on experience with the precision of drill movements required for Honor Guard. Arnold Air Society gave GMC cadets the opportunity to write cards to veterans, reflecting the organization’s commitment to service and community. Det 855’s High Intensity Cadet-Led Fitness Group introduced GMC cadets to the mission of the group, emphasizing mental toughness, high fitness standards, and teamwork under pressure.

Det 855’s auxiliaries and extracurricular activities give GMC cadets additional opportunities to develop their leadership, serve others, and challenge themselves to grow outside of the classroom. by @afrotcdet855

Pet the Jet:

Our cadets had a unique opportunity to go for a flight in a KC-135 Stratotanker! A special thanks to the aircraft commander and BYU AFROTC Det 855 alum, Capt Winegardner, and the crew for showing Det 855 cadets firsthand what a refueling mission looks like. Cadets interacted with the pilots, asking questions and learning about the training and day-to-day life of a USAF Pilot. Cadets also had the opportunity to observe a takeoff, flight, and landing from inside the cockpit. F-35s from Hill AFB joined us in the sky to refuel, and cadets watched the refueling boom operator coordinate and connect with the jets. This experience provided Det 855 cadets with a special opportunity to connect their AFROTC training to the mission of the USAF.

Precision. Discipline. Teamwork.

Det 855’s Honor Guard Drill Team welcomed BYU’s newest students to campus with a precision rifle demonstration during New Student Orientation.

Honor Guard is one of the many opportunities available to cadets at Det 855 to challenge themselves outside the classroom. Through hours of practice, cadets develop discipline, attention to detail, and trust in their teammates while representing the Air Force, BYU, and Det 855 throughout our community.

For the freshmen in the crowd considering AFROTC, this is just one of the opportunities waiting for you at Det 855.

Our predecessors who fought in WWII left behind a legacy of courage, initiative, and selfless service that continues to shape the Airmen and Guardians of today.

This summer, Det 855’s senior class traveled to England and France for a Staff Ride tracing the Normandy invasion from its strategic planning and decision-making to the battlefields where those decisions were put into action. Walking the ground gave our cadets the opportunity to study leadership, decision-making, and the lessons of those who came before them as they prepare to become officers in the United States Air Force and Space Force.

Det 855 provides its senior cadets with a 12 day staff ride every year, using historic battlefields and military campaigns as an immersive classroom for the study of leadership. Staff rides challenge cadets to examine the decisions made by leaders, understand the consequences of those decisions, and consider how those lessons apply to their own future service. Just as importantly, the experience brings our senior cadets together as a team before they take on the responsibility of leading Det 855’s 200-cadet Wing for the year. Experiences like these are an important part of how Det 855 develops thoughtful, capable officers and are made possible through our cadets' fundraising throughout the year and the generous support of those who invest in our cadets and their development.

Congratulations to Cadet Brian Adams from Det 855—the BYU Air Force ROTC program—for being awarded the 2025 State of Utah ROTC Cadet of the Year by Governor Spencer Cox in May! The award is given to one cadet from all ROTC programs in Utah, including Army and Navy programs.

Cadet Adams led the Air Force ROTC Honor Guard during spring 2025 and was the cadet wing commander during fall 2025. His commanders recognized him for exemplifying the best Air Force ROTC has to offer, strictly adhering to the Air Force core values, with an extra strong emphasis on service before self.
