Congratulations to Cadet Brian Adams from Det 855—the BYU Air Force ROTC program—for being awarded the 2025 State of Utah ROTC Cadet of the Year by Governor Spencer Cox in May! The award is given to one cadet from all ROTC programs in Utah, including Army and Navy programs.

Cadet Adams led the Air Force ROTC Honor Guard during spring 2025 and was the cadet wing commander during fall 2025. His commanders recognized him for exemplifying the best Air Force ROTC has to offer, strictly adhering to the Air Force core values, with an extra strong emphasis on service before self.

BYU Marriott Beacons of Light 150: What does it look like to bring the light of Christ into the military?

That was the heart of BYU 150 Saints at War Memorial Day tribute, where Air Force and Army ROTC cadets, veterans, and leaders gathered to honor the fallen — and to reflect on how faith in Jesus Christ is woven into the fabric of military service for BYU alumni.

Keynote speaker Ken Alford, a retired US Army colonel and BYU professor, explained: "The gospel of Jesus Christ and service in uniform are not incompatible. When done with humility and purpose, military service can be a sacred expression of discipleship."

As cadets gathered to lay a wreath and speak the names of BYU students and alumni who died in war, one thing was clear: these men and women were more than soldiers. They were disciples. And their legacy lives on in every cadet who chooses to carry that same light forward.

BYU dominates in the 🌭 eating contest with 1 of our guys downing 17 long Costco style hot dogs in 5 min! 🤢. The nearest competitor managed 10.

Other Ws in Trivia, 🏐, and 🏀 sealed the deal for BYU!

Hatch and the other current graduating seniors are going home undefeated Tri-Det 3x champs!!

Detachment 855’s Honor Guard represents the Air Force with pride and professionalism at every event in which they perform. From honoring fallen service members at funerals to presenting the colors at football and basketball games, our cadets rigorous training enables them to embody the highest standards of excellence and respect.

Each ceremony is an opportunity to serve; to honor those who came before us, and to inspire those who will follow. Through countless hours of training and dedication, our cadets ensure that every detail, every movement, and every presentation of the flag reflects the core values of integrity, service, and excellent.

Professionalism on display, tradition on parade.

Each year, the cadets of Detachment 855 hold a Presidential Review, an event where cadets are formally reviewed by BYU President C. Shane Reese, a distinguished visiting official, and the BYU Army and Air Force ROTC commanders. This year, cadets were privileged to hear addresses from President Reese, as well as United States Air Force Gen (Ret) Bruce Carlson, on the topics of heritage, faith, and dedication.

Marked by precision, uniformity, and attention to detail, the Presidential Review reflects the high standards expected of Army, Air Force, and Space Force cadets. The ceremony concluded with the presentation of an award and a painting to the visiting official—recognizing service and strengthening the connection between the university and the profession of arms.

Each year, Det 855 hosts a career day where cadets learn about a variety of Air Force Specialty Codes (AFSCs) from Officers across the Air and Space Forces. This event gives cadets the chance to connect with experienced leaders, gain insight into potential career fields, and discover how they can best serve in the future. A special thanks goes to the Officers at Hill AFB for this opportunity! @officialhillafb

Train to survive. Prepare to lead.

During SERE Leadership Lab, cadets develop skills rooted in Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape, while also training in small unit tactics and Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC). These lessons challenge cadets to think critically, work as a team, and perform under pressure in demanding environments.

By combining tactical decision-making with hands-on application, SERE LLAB reinforces the importance of readiness, adaptability, and leadership; skills essential for future Air and Space Force officers.

Tri-Det is an annual competition in which cadets from Brigham Young University, Utah State University, and the University of Utah go head to head in a series of physical fitness and Air Force competency events to clam the Tri-Det trophy. More than just a competition, it’s a test of endurance, teamwork, and grit. Events like these push us to grow physically, strengthen camaraderie between detachments, and build bonds across Utah’s AFROTC community.

Each year, @brighamyounguniversity ROTC cadets along with @universityofutah cadets meet the morning of the much-anticipated BYU-Utah rivalry “Holy War” football game to exchange a gifted football. This year, University of Utah Army, Air Force, and Navy cadets ran the game ball 27 miles south to gift the football to BYU Army and Air Force cadets, who continued the run to deliver the ball in time for the game at LaVell Edward’s Stadium. 38 cadets from both universities covered a total of 50 miles, honoring teamwork, endurance, and the spirit of the rivalry.

There’s a lot of leadership lessons that must be learned in just a few short years to turn out a capable Second Lieutenant. We asked a few of our POC to share some of the most important lessons they have learned so far.

Work hard. Train smart. Lead strong.

BYU AFROTC has worked in conjunction with the Exercise Science department for over a year to provide top-tier training and workout plans to their cadets. Each physical training session is geared towards success on the physical assessment, while also instilling an attitude of lifelong fitness and health. With our exercise science interns working in tandem with POC cadets to set goals and make plans, our cadets are enabled not only physically but also as leaders at a time when physical fitness is a top priority for the Air Force.
