I am walking Out of the Darkness in memory of my beloved son. Losing him has changed my life forever. There are no words that can fully describe the pain of losing a child, or how deeply I miss him every single day.

I carry my son with me always. He is in my thoughts, my memories, and in the little things I do to continue feeling connected to him. My love for him did not end when his life ended, and it never will.

I am walking to honor his life and his memory, and in the hope that by sharing our stories and walking together, other families will know they are not alone.

I walk for my son, with love, always.

If you find scientific research intimidating, we get it. But really, research is for everyone.

At AFSP, research informs everything we do, including our public policy efforts, education programming, loss survivor resources and, of course, our scientific research initiatives.

Why I Walk 💙 - Rachel

I walk because suicide prevention isn’t just a cause I believe in. It’s woven into the fabric of my life, both personally and professionally.

I walk for my mother, whose life was lost to suicide. I walk for my sisters and other family members who have died by suicide or struggled so profoundly that they came dangerously close. I walk for my two daughters, both of whom have faced their own battles with suicidal thoughts and moments when I came frighteningly close to losing them, too.

I walk because I know what it’s like to love someone you cannot always protect. I know the fear, the helplessness, the grief, and the questions that don’t always have answers. And through my own mental health struggles, I also know how difficult it can be to find hope when you’re hurting.

As a licensed psychotherapist who has worked with patients in an acute inpatient psychiatric hospital, I’ve also had the privilege of sitting with people in some of their darkest moments. I’ve witnessed extraordinary suffering, but I’ve also witnessed resilience, courage, connection, and the incredible capacity for healing. I’ve seen how profoundly it matters when someone feels heard, understood, and worthy of care.

My experiences have taught me that mental illness doesn’t discriminate, that love alone cannot always prevent tragedy, and that no family is immune. They’ve also taught me that silence, shame, and stigma can make suffering even lonelier.

I walk because I believe that connection can save lives. That asking difficult questions matters. That listening without judgment matters. That access to compassionate mental health care matters. And that hope, even when someone cannot find it for themselves, is worth holding onto.

I walk to honor those we’ve lost, to stand beside those who are struggling, and to remind the people who love them that they are not alone.

Most of all, I walk because I’ve seen what suicide takes from families, and I’ve also seen what becomes possible when people receive the support they need to stay.

I walk for those we’ve lost, for those still fighting, and for every life we still have the chance to save. by @afsp.hvwc
