Ocean Touch is OPEN! On view through September 26th at the Château de La Napoule @la_napoule_artfoundation

This show is the culmination of a summer of absolute immersion with the Mediterranean Sea. As you can see my work has undergone a transformation!Somehow the incredible grounds of the château has imparted its magic once again, and i have found something truly new.

Thank you so much to the foundation @la_napoule_artfoundation and @nelfou for this opportunity to exhibit in this beautiful space. You are family now and my gratitude is as boundless as the surrounding sea! 🥹🙏💦

“The sea is the infinite within the instant.”

Through a powerful dialogue with water, light, and air, Afton Love creates suspended forms and cyanotype paintings in direct collaboration with the shoreline. In her own words, this body of work is an exaltation — a translation of that singular moment when the wave crests, holding both motion and stillness.

Each piece emerges through a delicate and ephemeral process: India ink, sunlight, tides, and fabric converging in nature’s rhythm. From Tide Noir to Azure Tide, the works feel both elemental and ethereal — echoing the vastness of the ocean and the fleeting beauty of light across its surface.

The immersive installation The Eyes of the Sea floats above, capturing the breath of the sea in midair — a choreography of memory, rhythm, and transformation.

Municipal Bonds is excited to announce the gallery’s return to FOG Design+Art in 2027, with a solo presentation of new work by Afton Love titled "Taos/Tamalpais."⁠

A Northern California native and graduate of California College of the Arts, Love brings the landscape of the Bay Area into dialogue with the high desert of New Mexico, where she now lives and works. Across drawing and sculpture, she considers the passage of time, from the fleeting movement of ocean waves to the geological forces that have shaped the land over eons.⁠

In Love’s “Horizon,” an expansive field of waves extends toward the meeting of sea and sky, suggesting a space that continues beyond the frame. Graphite and micaceous clay on translucent silk organza shift with light and perspective, giving the surface a presence that feels mineral and atmospheric.⁠
⁠
Love coaxes earthbound materials toward lightness. Held within steel, the silk assumes the scale of landscape, and the horizon becomes an interior place, vast and unbounded.⁠

These eight porcelain tiles were cast from a beloved sandstone boulder in Abiquiu New Mexico. The beauty of porcelain is that it’s grain is extremely fine. This allows for every detail embedded within the stone to be perfectly recorded while still retaining a structure that is as delicate as a teacup 💕

“Afton Love’s “Prima Materia” takes its form from the weathered surface of a single sandstone boulder in New Mexico. Eight unique porcelain tiles preserve variations in its topography, shaped over millennia. The title refers to the alchemical concept of prima materia, or first matter: the elemental substance from which forms emerge. Together, the work extends Love’s longstanding investigation of erosional landscapes and the material record of time.”

In this work on silk I feel like I am actively playing with earth, water, and air..
I am painting on transparent silk organza with clay and graphite which come out of the ground being both lightfast and water soluble. Amazing! It is a joy to find materials that naturally express their unique qualities - and yet you would never expect to behave like watercolors. Stretched over American pine and framed in steel, I am coaxing each medium towards its own edge of perception and expected function.

“Surface Horizon” is on view as part of Municipal Bonds summer show Wave Comes in, Wave goes out. Catch it while you can!
