This is love. Glimpses of Italian ambient maestro Gigi Masin (@gigi_masin) with Reflections on his first-ever US tour this month.

From LA to NYC, we’ve been honored to share his gifts with each and every one of you, with support from Cole Pulice (@cole.pulice) and Spencer Zahn (@spencerzahn ). Gigi’s sounds are now more relevant than ever, a quest for simple connection and emotional truth, like his lyrics to “Call Me”:

Announcing 𝗨𝗡𝗦𝗘𝗘𝗡 𝗩𝗜𝗦𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦: 𝘈 𝘕𝘦𝘸 𝘈𝘨𝘦 𝘔𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘤 & 𝘊𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘚𝘺𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘶𝘮 ✨

Across two days of live music, film, conversation, and archival media, Unseen Visions brings together voices from New Age, ambient music, visionary film, and West Coast counterculture. It’s the brainchild of our friend Jacob Smith, professor at Northwestern University, in support of his forthcoming book 𝘉𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘨𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘯 𝘜𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘚𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘦: 𝘕𝘦𝘸 𝘈𝘨𝘦 𝘔𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘤 𝘢𝘴 𝘝𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘈𝘳𝘵 (University of California Press). We’re honored that Age of Reflections is featured in the text, capturing a divine moment from one of our journeys into sound, light, and space.

𝙽𝙴𝚆 𝚈𝙾𝚁𝙺 𝙲𝙸𝚃𝚈 ~ This Friday night, 𝗦𝗣𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘𝗥 𝗭𝗔𝗛𝗡 (@spencerzahn) takes the Reflections stage once again. We have one last night with the great 𝗚𝗜𝗚𝗜 𝗠𝗔𝗦𝗜𝗡 (@gigi_masin), here all the way from Venice for what’s been a run of spellbinding shows.

On this spring’s I Envy Light, Spencer’s plaintive work on fretless bass meets guitarist Will Graefe’s 12-string magic. Layered with soft-focus electronics, it folds that textural conversation out into countless shimmering shapes. It’s a recent favorite of ours from his nascent Sudden Quarterly imprint, a new home for bicoastal collaborations between musicians across the jazz and ambient gamut. An early highlight among what’s sure to be many.

We’ll gather Friday at the storied Brooklyn cathedral that is St. Ann & The Holy Trinity, awash in projection-mapped light. Some tix still available, 🔗 in our bio

Twenty five years on, The Disintegration Loops by 𝗪𝗜𝗟𝗟𝗜𝗔𝗠 𝗕𝗔𝗦𝗜𝗡𝗦𝗞𝗜 (@musex1) holds a mythic place in the canon, linked as it is to the tragic, surreal circumstances of its genesis.

Today, the record plays on loop in the 9/11 Memorial & Museum at Ground Zero. Its story, wrote the late theorist 𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗞 𝗙𝗜𝗦𝗛𝗘𝗥, “a recording of tapes that destroyed themselves in the very process of their transfer to digital — is a parable (almost too perfect) for the switch from the fragility of analog to the infinite replicability of digital. What we have lost, it can often seem, is the very possibility of loss.”

Strange, maybe, that this particular piece of music would come to evoke that brief flash of violence that broke everything. “What is the music that is closest to air?,” asks 𝗟𝗔𝗨𝗥𝗜𝗘 𝗔𝗡𝗗𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗢𝗡 in her foreword to DLP Arcadia Archive Edition, “subliminal, atmospheric…close to mantras, meditation and tai chi.” In that gentle repetition is an invitation to reflect and to mourn, even as the world keeps shifting in jarring, ever-accelerating ways. A quarter century later, its haunting power hasn’t degraded in the slightest.

This November, Basinski revisits his masterpiece live at Reflections Detroit (11/13) and Chicago (11/14). Special guests 𝗪𝗜𝗡𝗗𝗬 & 𝗖𝗔𝗥𝗟 (@windyandcarlofficial) will join on accompaniment, plus an opening set from 𝗣𝗨𝗥𝗘𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗞 (@pureliiink). by @ageofreflections

Welcome to 💿 Reflections w/ Gigi Masin: Playlist 023 💿

For his official playlist, the Italian master of mood leads us on a nostalgic dig through the crates, full of touchstones that call long-lost memories to mind. There’s a healthy dose of Laurel Canyon here, with all-timers from Joni and Tim Buckley, alongside sweeping 1960s Italian soundtracks and classic soul steppers. If you’ve spent time inside the tender, ruminative worlds Gigi conjures, these selections offer a kind of map of the emotional landscape underneath them.

a special one for us next thursday, september 3, joining @ageofreflections to welcome the legendary @gigi_masin gigi_masin to SF ⛪

i loved gigi’s music before i knew who made it, a gift from the mighty main attrakionz and friendzone. “clouds” was (naturally) part of the genetic source code that coalesced into cloud rap. his early records — the ’86 masterpiece ~wind~ and the split lp with charles hayward — were almost lost to time, with many of wind’s og 500 copies having been quite literally washed away by a flood in gigi’s native venice.

so maybe ironic that his ode to the ephemeral feels resonant as ever? then again, nothing has staying power quite like impermanence, as a long trail of samples + reissues can attest. now at 70, gigi’s setting off on his first-ever US tour. honored to have him here, with the great @cole.pulice leading off on sax + electronics 🌻
