It's been an action packed summer at AGNI studios and here's one of our biggest highlights: designing an outfit for the iconic @ravjotmehek for Pride month! 🌈 She was so kind to reach out & have us custom make her look for the Queens pride parade in New York 🥹 Together we found the perfect way to celebrate queer, Sikh, and Punjabi culture through fashion, and we're so proud of how this turned out! An ode to Pansexual Punjabis 🌈 Every detail of this custom @agnistyle was filled with history and culture from the paranda braid that creates the structure of the piece, to the superhero like dupatta with “Asi Sare Ik Haan” embroidered in Punjabi, to the pink, blue, and yellow beaded embellishments symbolizing the pansexual flag, to the Punjabi Sharara bottoms, to the beautiful Nirbhau Nirvar text paranda by @parandaparty 💕 @itsnehalicious worked so so hard to bring a silly sketch of mine to life and added so much of her love, energy, insight, and design masterfully into this iconic Pride outfit that I wore to honor @kingsunnyb being the first Sikh Grand Marshall of the Queens Pride Parade. I am SO inspired by Neha and her work, and have been fortunate enough to have worked with her several times on art exhibits over the past few years. She is such a kind soul with incredible talent to match. It is my true honor to have worked with her and created something so meaningful together. I believe in representing ourselves fully, as does Neha. We do not have to choose between our identity and our faith. There are no rules that we must pick one even though society often forces it upon us. We can be as multifaceted as we want and there is never any limit, and that is exactly what this piece represents to me 💕 unity, pride, heritage, and true expression of our full selves. I had a friend who once pointed out that I was a “bad hugger”. She was right in that statement because I always became awkward and stiff. Embracing a person had felt uncomfortable to me. I’d try my hardest to escape someone coming in for a hug by rushingly saying goodbye. Sometimes I’d succeed, other times I was caught in someone’s arms, just waiting for the moment I could leave this awkward stance. _ My dislike of hugs stemmed from the lack of affection or expression of affection in my South-Asian household. Saying “I Love You” to my parents always seemed unnatural. Uttering those 3 words and 8 letters felt foreign. _ I no longer have contact with this friend, but if I did, I’d tell her that I hug all my friends now. It doesn’t feel like a chore or something I dread. It’s a pure expression of my endearment towards them. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine myself being a model, walking a runway, let alone being able to smize. Last week feels like a fever dream. When @itsnehalicious and I met 4 years ago, it was through a Facebook group for South Asian creatives. For years, i have admired her edgy street style she shares through her brand @agnistyle. Bold colors, confidence, and most importantly, pushing the boundaries of what South Asian fashion could be. When she asked me to be a model, i was in shock. Like many people, I struggle with body dysmorphia and many times lack self-confidence when put in positions where other folks are much more experienced. But as someone who is passionate about being comfortable with uncomfortable, I knew I had to take the opportunity. With hurting my ankle (and almost breaking it) the day before, the heat wave that was really testing all the models, and my inner battles with my own confidence, I am so proud to have walked my first runway, and that too during New York Fashion Week as a part of the first ever @asiannyfw ! And what makes me more proud is not walking, but seeing a room full of people celebrate my friend's hard work and energy that she has put all these years! Being a small part of showing her art is such an honor. And as someone who owns some of her clothes, they're all made so meticulously with so much attention to detail. Her quality handwork to material selection and composition is so impressive. When I wear Agni, I have the ability to channel a different energy and confidence, which I might not feel all the time. With that, I CAN'T BELEIVE I WALKED IN NYFW! Here's to adding something to the bucklist and immediately checking it off! Last weekend was so surreal! I still feel like I’m half day dreaming when I think back to a week ago walking the runway at our debut New York fashion week show! AGNI (@agnistyle) has been a journey and this show was very much the story of the past 7 years. I don’t even know how to begin describing what this means to me, but I’ll start by saying, for those of you who don’t know, AGNI means “fire” in Hindi. When creating this line I thought of a flame as a metaphor for life because while on one hand fire can burn it can also bring light to dark spaces, which is very much true of people as well. We all have the ability to showcase our fierceness just as much as we have the ability to shine our light on the world, whether that be through fashion, our personalities, or our sense of expressing ourselves, we are all born with dualities! And that’s exactly what last Friday was about, the dualities of design, edgy vs. feminine, high end vs. street, Desi vs. western, warm tones vs. cool tones, fiery energy vs. classy elegance and everything in between! I love that the when you think of who the ideal AGNI girl is, there’s no one vibe or style that comes to mind! The AGNI girl is everyone and everything and I’m so proud of the 11 uniquely different stories that were showcased on the runway! AGNI is a scientist, a drag queen, a disability advocate, a nurse, a fellow small business owner, a model, the 9-5 girlies, students and every type of creative. A week ago I walked my first runway during @AsianNYFW for @AgniStyle x @WZN.Official ! To think 7 years ago I was in high school struggling to walk due to excruciating chronic pain, not sure where life would take me. Looking back after finding the incredible communities online who’ve brought me opportunities I could have never imagined I am so grateful to be here. It’s artists like @ItsNehalicious of @AgniStyle who have led me to dive into more creative outlets drawing inspiration from my culture. There are truly so many incredible Desi artists out there. Meeting @MalihaBhuiyan and representing @WZN.Official as a fellow Bangladeshi muslim. It was an honor to walk for two talented women whose work is clearly their pride and joy. To represent both artists and the love they have put into their art meant the world to me! I loved donning a dark, edgy look. Embodying the personification of fire. A stone cold heart at the center of my chest. As a giggly, softhearted #Desiabled being I enjoy stepping into a character with a stark difference to my own personality. Being a tiny Bengali at less than 5 feet tall I never expected to be here. Thank you @AsianNYFW for accommodating & including me. @Ailan_EdgeEva.MUA brought Neha’s vision artistic vision to life. @AymanVisuals_ captured me feeling most like myself than in a long time. Who knew I would feel most confident walking with a cane meant to show off? Instead of to be embarrassed of? Over the years, the Disabled community has shown me how to embrace being Disabled. #BabesWithMobilityAids Chronic and iconic ya know? all the Disabled models & fashion lovers out there who have taught me how to step into my power most of all. I can’t forget to mention @NeoWalkSticks who’ve been creating the perfect mobility aids to accessorize with any look. So blessed to have had my love @ChronicallyC with me throughout this whole process. Borrowing this beautiful cane for this unforgettable moment meant so much to me.
