Watkins Glen is an absolutely beautiful area, wow, just wow. There were 19 waterfalls and 200 ft cliffs in this one state park.

The deep gorges were formed by thousands of years glacial recession and water erosion through shale and sandstone. The deep, shaded canyon walls create cool and damp microhabitats that allow lush mosses and ferns to thrive.

Interestingly, because the gorge runs roughly east-to-west, one wall faces north and remains mostly cloaked in shadow, while the opposite wall faces south and absorbs intense, direct sunlight. This stark divide splits the trail into two completely different ecological worlds. If you look closely at the second picture, you can clearly see the difference between the two sides.

The shady side of the gorge represents a northern boreal forest or temperate rainforest. It creates habitat for specialized flora, such as eastern hemlock, mountain maple, and Canada yew. Water is able to constantly seep through the shale without being evaporated on this side, making it suitable habitat for mosses, ferns, and liverwort.
The sunny side’s flora is adapted to hotter drier conditions. Instead of mosses, we can see native grasses, shrubs, and sun-loving wildflowers. by @agreskoadventures

Been super into owls lately if you can’t tell… First oil painting of one of my wildlife photographs. Featuring me babysitting and enjoying the nice weather we had for like 2 days.

Spring peepers and wood frogs are among the very first frogs to breed in Maryland. Their calls can be heard starting in late February, and if you’re me and you live near a wetland, they may keep you up late into the late. Spring peepers don’t care about your midterms, they just want to get freaky until 2am.
Spotted salamanders are also a good indication that spring is among us. They migrate to vernal pools during the first heavy, warm rains of early spring/ late winter to participate in the big egg-laying party. by @agreskoadventures

Flammulated Owl - Psiloscops flammeolus.
Trying something a little different by posting my drawings. Not sure if this will stay up since it’s a different aesthetic than my photography, but we’ll see.

Sandhill Cranes + a not-so-subtle photobomber.

Sandhill Cranes are rare but exciting visitors in North Carolina. Seen as seasonal migrants, they often stop in farm fields and wetlands during the fall and winter. These large, grey birds with distinct red crowns are known for their loud, prehistoric bugling calls.

A fun fact I learned while researching these birds is that sandhill cranes have one of the longest fossil histories of any extant bird. The oldest confirmed sandhill crane fossil is 2.5 million years old, while most living species of birds date back to less than 1.8 million years. by @agreskoadventures
