I just got back from leading my first multi-day field excursion with biology students, and we had a blast. These types of field experiences were a big part of my time as a bio student, and were foundational for my career. They set me on my professional path, but also honed skills and "street smarts" that are valuable to a field biologist.

I look back on these experiences fondly, and I'm grateful for the professors that made those trips happen. So, I was rightfully stoked to be able to share this type of experience with my own bright-eyed and enthusiastic students, themselves in the early stages of their careers, in hopes that they might learn about, enjoy, and appreciate the natural world around us in a way that can only be done through trips like this.

In more recent years, I've been lucky to extensively explore the National Wildlife Refuge System in eastern North Carolina with some great friends in a (probably insane) effort to see as many species as possible while enjoying some of the incredible diversity of habitats found on the NC coastal plain, each having their own set of special species that inhabit them. When the opportunity came to take students on a field experience, it was a no-brainer that this special place was the first one to try.

In visiting 5 different refuges, we tallied 117 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and inverts, covered about 1400 miles in four days with some special experiences with a few species.

But of all the great moments, the first photo here is probably my favorite. In the closing minutes of sunlight on our last day, after coming off the high of having just sighted perhaps the rarest carnivore on the planet, we all just silently watched a gorgeous sunset over the expansive refuge as the frogs began to strike up chorus for the night. Nobody said that they wanted to stay and watch the sunset - it just drew us in and everyone was silently on the same page in enjoying our surroundings in silence and reflection at the end of a tiring but good trip. Doesn't get much better than that.

Thanks for the great time guys! I hope you all enjoyed it on some level.
Can't wait until the next trip.
