Zion is about to turn 5. She’s been officially training Jiu-Jitsu for about a year and a half.

But the reality is... sometimes she just doesn’t want to train.

I wear two hats with her: Daddy and Professor. But to her, I’m Daddy 100% of the time.

It took me a while to understand that.

Sometimes she does the entire 45-minute class. Sometimes she tells me, “I just want to teach with you,” so I let her “help Daddy” demonstrate the exercises while she’s actually doing exactly what the other kids are doing.

And sometimes she just wants to sit matside, eat her snacks, watch me teach and come into my arms because she’s tired from school or simply wants Daddy.

A year and a half ago, that would frustrate me.

Today, I understand it differently.

I’m not in a rush to promote her. I’m not in a rush to have her competing.

We had promotions last month and I tried giving her third stripe. She didn’t want it. So guess what? She didn’t get it.

I’ve learned to respect her time.

I don’t want to force Jiu-Jitsu on her to the point that one day she doesn’t want to be on the mats with me anymore.

I just want her to be a kid.

She was on these mats within weeks of being born. She learned to crawl and walk here. The academy is her second home. She was never really introduced to Jiu-Jitsu... she was born into it.

Today she barely participated in her own class.

Then tonight during Adult No-Gi, she was playing around doing cartwheels. I looked at her and said:

“Zizi, push the shoulder, cartwheel over the guard, go to mount and armbar.”

I only said it once.

She did it... and then drilled it by herself for the next five minutes.

I just watched her and smiled.

No pressure. No expectations. No rush.

Just letting her grow up on the mats, at her own pace, with Daddy by her side.

Count your blessings.

The little things you can’t buy are usually the things worth the most.

We are spirits living in a material world, all walking our own path.

Sometimes that path takes us through the desert. Through moments that force us to look within, face our own demons, learn from our mistakes, and decide who we want to become on the other side.

It doesn't matter how long ago we walked through that desert, or how long it took us to find our way out. The scars on our feet remain. Not to keep us trapped in the past, but to remind us of the lessons we learned there, how our actions made others feel, and the person we never want to stop working to become.

Life isn't about pretending to be perfect. It's about growing. Loving. Showing up. Taking responsibility for who we are and doing our best every day to become better for the people we love and the people who trust us.

My family at home is my foundation. My family at the academy is something I've been blessed to build through years of teaching, learning, sacrifice, and sharing the mats together. Both remind me that who we choose to become matters far beyond ourselves.

These moments remind me what really matters.

Family. Purpose. Love. Growth.

The desert may be behind us, but we carry its lessons wherever we go.

One day at a time.

VA Academy Black Belt #02 — Pedro Arellano

Pedro joined VA Academy in February of 2021 as a purple belt.

At the time, he had stepped away from Jiu-Jitsu after some frustrating experiences and had lost much of the love he once had for the sport. He came to us out of shape, unmotivated, and trying to find his way back.

For a long time, our 6 AM classes were just me and Pedro.

We drilled, did circuit training, rolled, and pushed through those early mornings when nobody else was there. The goal was not only to get him healthy again, but to help him fall in love with Jiu-Jitsu again.

Little by little, he did.

A while back, I gave Pedro the responsibility of taking care of our 6 AM classes. What he may not have realized was that I was preparing him for this moment.

Everything has a meaning. Everything has a purpose.

When I first came to the United States as a purple belt, I was also given the responsibility of running morning classes and helping teach other classes. Years later, I found myself doing the same thing with Pedro.

I wanted to see him lead, teach, and understand the responsibility that comes with helping others grow.

And he embraced it.

The technical level, toughness, consistency, and perseverance of our morning crew today are a reflection of the work Pedro has put into them.

There is something special about seeing someone who once needed help finding his own motivation become the person responsible for motivating and leading others.

Yesterday, in front of our students and his family, I had the honor of tying a black belt around his waist.

Congratulations, Pedro. Thank you for trusting me with your journey and for everything you continue to give back to VA Academy.

One of the things I appreciate the most is having friends and teammates who enjoy the atmosphere and culture we’ve built at VA Academy enough to come spend time on our mats.

Black belts who still come to learn, ask questions, exchange ideas, and at the same time share their own knowledge and experiences with us.

That’s one of my favorite things about Jiu-Jitsu. No matter how long you’ve been doing this, there’s always something to learn from each other.

And when good people come through the doors, train with us, bring their families around, and contribute to what we’re building, it only makes our culture stronger.

Grateful for another good day on the mats with friends and the next generation running around together.

Thank you @dcpessoa for coming to spend some time with us!

Zizi decided her teammates deserved some “Good Job” and “Awesome Job” stickers after class today. 😂❤️

A big thank you to my Checkmat brothers for making the trip to train with us tonight. It was great having you and your students on our mats.

The strongest teams are built when we train together, share knowledge, and help each other grow. Iron sharpens iron, and every time we get together, our entire association gets better.

My goal is simple: to make Friday nights a place where Checkmat teammates from across DFW can come together, train hard, exchange ideas, and continue building the culture that brought us here in the first place.

One of the things I love most about jiu-jitsu is that no matter how long you've been on the mats, you're always a student.

The sport is constantly evolving, and as professors, practitioners, competitors, and students, it's our responsibility to keep learning, adapting, and passing that knowledge on.

This back attack is one of those techniques that always takes me back to 2008, when Ronaldo Jacaré @ronaldojacare came to my former academy for a seminar while I was a purple belt living in Ludlow, Massachusetts. Out of all the techniques I've learned over the years, this is one that has never left me.

Over the years, I've made small adjustments to fit my own game, body type, and style. That's one of the beautiful things about jiu-jitsu. We all start by learning the same concepts, but eventually we make them our own.

As a professor, I don't expect every student to perform a technique exactly the way I do. My goal is to help each person understand the concept and adapt it to their own body type, attributes, and style. I truly believe there are a thousand ways to teach the same technique to a thousand different people.

It's funny how certain positions carry memories. Every time I teach this sequence and many others, I'm reminded of the people who invested their time and knowledge in me. Those lessons become part of your own journey, and years later, you find yourself passing them on to the next generation.

If you make it all the way to the last slide, you'll see a picture from that seminar back in 2008. Looking back now, it's a reminder that we're all products of the people who took the time to share what they knew with us. I'm still one of those students, and I'm grateful to have the opportunity to pass those lessons on today.

Keep learning. Keep sharing. Keep growing.
