600th Post!

This post has been in my Canva for a few months, I've been playing about with it, wondering if I should post it or not but this seemed like the perfect time.

I know it sounds a bit soppy and more personal than our usual posts but I've been reflecting back on how we started this account and how much has changed.

I also want to make sure we keep the account true to us. Our style of posts has changed in a lot of ways, including jumping on some trends, using Canva way more and doing longer reels. But I still love taking pretty photos and sharing them too. And I hope that still shows on our page.

I know we do a lot of reviews now, but I want our page to show our genuine love of games and not just seem like an advertising channel which I'm finding hard to balance sometimes. We are always honest in our review posts and we love chatting to people in the comments & DMs ☺️

Anyway enough of my rambling, basically we are so glad we started up our page and get to be part of the amazing board game community 🥰

Board game people you are the best!

Let us reintroduce ourselves!

Hello!
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Fit like? Is a local phrase that translates to what like - meaning how are you?

We're Adam & Hayley 👋🏼 (AHboardgames)

We've been running this account for just over 2 years & had planned on doing a reintroduction post for our 2 year instaversary but we had a baby in the last few months so life is very full on as you can imagine!

But we came across Martha's page @businesssecretsclub & she's running a Summer Reset challenge to help reset Instagram's algorithm & hopefully let us reconnect with our followers 🥰 #thesummerreset2026

So here we are!

A couple of board gamers from Scotland sharing reviews, recommendations, pretty photos & much more!

Hope you enjoy & thanks for following us! by @ahboardgames

I’ve been reflecting a lot recently & not just about gaming.

It’s made me think about what’s important to us and why we play games as much as we do. When non-gamers ask what we’ve been up to, there can sometimes be a bit of confusion around why we play so many different games, or why this hobby takes up so much of our free time.

These are the reasons I came up with.

I’m sure I’ve missed plenty & I know everyone’s reasons will be different to ours. But if you play games, I hope you’ll relate to some of these.

And if you don’t, maybe they reflect back on how you choose to spend your spare time & what those moments mean to you.

I’d love to know what you think 💜 by @ahboardgames

There was a crazy storm in Rhodes on Wednesday, we got alerts to our phones advising us to limit movement - basically stay inside unless it's an emergency.

It was pretty scary tbh, the electricity kept cutting out and I've never heard thunder so loud. It lasted from the early hours til early evening.

So we spent the day inside playing games, reading, making use of the indoor mini club 😅 and eating lots of nice food!

⛔ I think this covers "no trespassing" for #Boardtober2026 by @getintogames because we didn't trespass outside 😅🙈 by @ahboardgames

DO NOT OPEN! Seriously there's spoilers!

Sagrada Artisans is the last game we played before we came on holiday.

@floodgategames

It's a legacy game, so they are really tricky to make content on without revealing too much so don't swipe if you plan to play the game with all the surprises.

We really love the legacy experience, the games tend to be more expensive which put people off because you only get a certain number of plays. The experience is 100% worth it for us!

What's your favourite legacy game?

👥 2-3 |⏳ 60-90 mins |🎂 14+| ⚖️ Medium

⚙️Deduction | Hidden Roles| Hand management ⚙️

You have witnessed something you weren't meant to see, there may be an assassin after you but there might not be. Cooperate with your fellow players to make it through the night.

💭
These are our first impressions, we've only had one 2 player game so far with the basic set up.

We really enjoyed this game, it does have traitor vibes. When we played I drew the assassin card as my hidden role and I managed to successfully let Adam die which meant I won and he didn't know I was a killer 😅

We liked that the action cards had to be played in suits and that some of them complemented eachother. For example when you played one you benefited from having another suit (as specified on the card).

The unseen events give you a chance to be creative with the game but you need to keep a poker face and be confident with what you're saying is on the card.

It's important to be somewhat truthful as you play otherwise I think you could get obviously found out. Some cards let opponents look at your hand etc so they could find out you deliberately didn't help them.

The actions seem to be the perfect balance of a variety of things you need. There's also a conserved energy box where you can save cards for later or other players can use them. E.g if you have a bullet but you don't have a gun, it might be good to pop it into the reserve.

Recruiting allies is really useful, especially if you draw the right cards to get them quickly in the game. I think I had two in our game & Adam didn't have any!

I absolutely love the art work, it really feels like a 1940s crime film sorta vibe

🕵🏼‍♀️ We think this is such a clever game, we want to play with the asymmetric characters and definitely play with 3 players to see how that changes things up 🔍

When the sun goes down...

Or disappears from Scotland, let's go on a holiday!

Sea Salt & Paper is our all time favourite holiday game and it feels weird to play it at home 😅 We've also played it so much the cards aren't looking their best anymore, but it just shows what a well loved game it really is!

We'll always have room in the case for this!

*We have the extra salt & extra pepper expansions too!

Is there a game that instantly makes you think of holidays?

Maybe you don't play games on holiday? Let us know ☺️

Sunday 23rd August 2026, the night everything changed...

The night our friend introduced us to Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Trick-taking game!

Since then we have had 41 plays of this with us marginally beating the game 22 to 19 😅 (we're counting each game we've played - some chapters require multiple games to win)

It's safe to say we're fully invested in finishing our 3 player campaign and moving onto the two towers next!

@officedoggames are definitely hinting at The Return of the King being released this year... maybe even this month, so that is very exciting!!

Mistakes were made...

We love a thematic history game, but it's topic where mistakes change how we see life today.

Here's five history themed games we've picked from our collection!

Sabika @germanpmillan @ludonovajuegos
A euro game with 3 rondels - if you haven't tried it why not!

Men Nefer @germanpmillan @ludonovajuegos
We can't get enough of this euro game it's so thematic, we love everything about it!

Middle Ages @studio_h_games @hachetteboardgamesuk
A fantastic tile laying game which we really need to play more often

Dinner Party @failure_factory
This is a fun game where you are trying to sit guests around a dinner table and use their abilities to your advantage

@World in Turmoil - an expansion to World Order @hegemonic_project_games
We're actually still to play with this expansion but it contains events which are based on real events that occurred after 2010

What's your favourite history themed game? Which one would you pick from our collection?

In an effort to fit in...

Trying to be spooky, joining in with boardtober! But also #mysterymonday🎲 was the first community # that we joined in with, in an effort to fit in with the board game community! And this is the answer to our mystery from 2 weeks ago!

Swipe once for game review ☺️

Trail to the Temple

One of Reiner Knizia's newest games

👥 1-4 |⏳20-80mins | 🎂 8+ | ⚖️ med-light

We were kindly gifted this for review from @mindwaretoys

▶️ A group of 3 explorers are trying to reach the temple, collecting coloured artifacts along the way

Everyone can control any explorer they like, they move by playing one movement card from your hand - they move that many spaces & you pick up the tile they land on - it's yours & removed from the map. Draw back up to 5 cards

Your aim is to collect the most valuable colour of artifact.

The value of the colours change throughout the game so you're trying to collect the most valuable colour.

There's 6 drones that match the colours of the artifacts & the value of the artifacts is controlled by the drones on the track.

You can increase the drone value by landing on a drone tile or once all explorers have past uncollected tiles on the map the coloured artifacts left over cause the matching coloured drones to move up one point per artifact symbol

There are other fun tiles you can land on during the way, like the big location tiles which are face down events. Or you can collect point tiles for which explorer you think is going to reach the temple first.

💭
This is a typical Knizia game that seems simple on the surface but there's some clever strategies underneath.

We liked the clean up mechanism of passing the explorers over tiles and the value of the leftover tiles increasing on the drone track. If you know other players have collected a certain colour you might not want to leave it, but if you collect it's not going to go up in value immediately. There's so many things to think of and there's such a fine balance with the artifacts, drones and explorer movements. Which explorer do you move & how much?

The location tiles keep the game exciting with hidden events. The e by @ahboardgames

September 2026 Round up

I think September has been our best month of gaming this year and Tabletop Scotland probably contributes a lot to that. Not just playing at the convention but there's a the hype and excitement before and after where you're all consumed by gaming 😅

Ok, let's take a look at the numbers!

Totaling up the table & BGA plays:

★ 89 plays       ☝🏼 20 on last month
★ 42 games     ☝🏼 6 on last month
★ H-index: 4     ☝🏼1 on last month
★ 15 games were brand new to us! ☝🏼5

💻 10 of our plays were on BGA

Mostly games with the instagamers group but we did have a great game of Terraforming Mars one evening together.

That leaves an incredible 79 plays on the table!

⭐Highlights:

We have been playing lots of LotR the trick taking game and loving it, we're almost finished the fellowship of the ring as a 3 player campaign!

A stand out game for Adam was Countdown where he annihilated me 😂

At Tabletop Scotland Personal Demons was definitely our favourite demo! We backed it on the first day of the Kickstarter!

We were so happy we got to preview Excursions we think it will be such a hit next year ☺️

Too many great moments to talk about this month, but in general getting lots of games in with more players than just the two of us has been fantastic!

__

⚔️ Head-to-head stats

Adam: 15 wins
Hayley: 7 wins

Still not great from me 😅

🎯 Challenges

We played 12 games in our 15*5 challenge taking us to 65% and 26 plays left to go!

Play every game in our collection saw 10 more plays. Taking us up to 63% if our collection played!

__

October is definitely not going to live up to September, we're off on holiday so hoping to relax and switch off for at least half the month. We will take travel games but gaming overall will be slowing down as will content. Hoping to play Shallow Sea which was the game we were looking forward to playing last month though!

How was your month in gaming? Any thoughts on any of these games?

Claiming "It has woken" prompt for this from #Boardtober2026 because we'd clearly been sleeping on making this round up post and September has definitely ended!😂🙈
