GOT A WALL? WANT IT TO STAND OUT? 🎨

Whether it’s the side of a building, inside your business, a downtown wall, restaurant patio, school, office, or a giant blank space begging for something more interesting, I create custom murals designed specifically for the people and places they belong to.

And yes, I travel! ✈️

I’m based in McKinney, Texas, but my murals have taken me across Texas, around the country, and internationally. Big walls and new destinations are kind of my favorite combination.

Here’s what working with me looks like:

✨ We talk about your wall, your ideas, and what you want the space to feel like.

🎨 I create a custom concept and work with you through the design process.

🪜 Then I show up and make the magic happen. I handle the details from setup to cleanup so you get to watch a blank wall completely transform.

Mural projects start at $1,000, with most projects falling between $5,000–$20,000+ depending on size, complexity, location, and design.

Businesses, cities, nonprofits, developers, restaurants, visitor centers, public art programs, homeowners, and anyone else with a really good wall... I want to hear from you.

👇 COMMENT “I WANT A QUOTE” and I’ll DM you with the next steps!

Know someone with a wall I should paint? Tag them below.

Let’s make your wall impossible to ignore.

I’m painting 100 bird murals around the world. 🐦🌎 And I’m looking for the next walls.

Wings Across the World is my mission to create 100 large-scale murals celebrating birds, the places they call home, and the communities that share those places with them.

Each mural features a bird native or meaningful to its location, paired with local plants, landscapes, history, or other elements that tell the story of that community. No two murals are meant to be the same.

So far, these wings have taken me from Texas to Hawaiʻi, Nevada, Austria and beyond, and we’re just getting started.

Want to bring a Wings Across the World mural to YOUR town?

Here’s what I’m looking for:
🪽 A publicly accessible wall of at least 200 sq. ft.
🪽 Permission from the building/wall owner
🪽 Funding through a commission, sponsorship, grant, tourism funding, EDC/MDC, donations or community partners
🪽 A community excited about public art, birds and telling its story

Businesses, cities, visitor centers, nonprofits, birding organizations, universities, arts organizations and private sponsors can all participate.

Have a wall? Know a wall? Know someone who needs to see this?

Comment “WINGS” below and I’ll DM you information about bringing Wings Across the World to your community.

And tag a city, business or organization where you think I should paint next. 👇

100 murals. 100 stories. One very big flock. 🐦

#WingsAcrossTheWorld

1.	“Wings of McKinney”
📍 500 S. Tennessee St., McKinney, TX 75069
🐦 Bird: House Finch

🤝 Important to the project: This is mural #1/100 and the mural that launched Wings Across the World. You chose the House Finch because you frequently saw them around Downtown McKinney, where you began your mural career and where you call home.

2. Wings of the Cotton Mill
📍 McKinney Cotton Mill, 610 Elm St., McKinney, TX 75069
🐦 Birds: Three Barn Owls
🌸 Plants/flowers: Pink coneflowers
🤝 This is one of the largest early Wings murals at approximately 25 × 50 feet.

3. “Wings of Hawaiʻi”
📍 University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo
🐦 Bird: ʻAkiapōlāʻau, an endemic Hawaiian honeycreeper
🌺 Plants/flowers: Koa, ʻōhiʻa lehua and other native Hawaiian vegetation

HI BIRDTOBER PEOPLE! 👋🐦🎨

Before we start drawing, painting, stitching, sculpting, collaging, or otherwise making 31 birds in October, I thought we should actually meet each other.

I’m Andrea Holmes! I’m an artist, muralist, author, traveler, mom, professional bird-noticer, and the person who started Birdtober eight years ago.

A few things about me:

🎨 I’m a full-time artist and muralist at A. Holmes Art Studio.

🐦 I’m painting my way through Wings Across the World, my project to create 100 large-scale bird murals around the world featuring birds native or meaningful to each place.

📖 I’m the co-author of Art Makes Magic with Beth Fields, a book about creativity, building an art practice, and making the dang thing.

🧚 I’m one half of My Fairy Art Mother, where we help artists build creative careers and figure out all the weird business stuff nobody teaches you in art school.

😂 I’m also one of the people behind 60 Second Bad Portraits, where we make intentionally questionable portraits of people in approximately one minute.

🧳 I created the Travel Sticker Suitcase because apparently simply traveling wasn’t enough. I needed a giant visual record of everywhere I’ve been, too.

🐦‍⬛ And, of course, I created Birdtober. What started as my own October art challenge has turned into one of my favorite parts of the year. This is YEAR EIGHT!

🥊 When I’m not painting, there’s a decent chance I’m boxing or lifting something heavy so I can continue climbing lifts and painting giant walls.

✈️ I LOVE to travel, especially when art, murals, birds, weird roadside stops, or an adventure are involved.

❤️ I am also a mom to a really awesome kid.

That’s a little bit about the human behind this challenge. Now I want to meet YOU.

Make your own introduction post or carousel and tell us:

Where are you from?
What kind of art do you make?
Is this your first Birdtober?
What are you most excited to create this year?

Use #birdtober2026 so we can find each other, then go through the hashtag and say hi to a few other artists. taken in McKinney, Texas by @aholmesartstudio

Day 17 of #Birdtober2026: Andean Cock-of-the-Rock! 🧡

That bright orange crest deserved a wall of its own, but I gave him a colorful neighbor anyway! I included a keel-billed toucan and surrounded them with bold flowers and geometric patterns inspired by Peruvian textiles.

I imagine this mural bringing a big burst of color to a street in Lima, Peru. I had fun mixing the detailed birds with simpler shapes and letting the flowers overlap the giant white letters. Another imaginary wall I’d love to make real someday! 🎨🇵🇪

For all 31 days, I’ll be creating bird mural mockups using a mix of Procreate, Canva, and image editing apps. My hope is that some of these concepts might actually turn into future murals.

Day 16 of Birdtober: Blue-capped Cordon-bleu! 💙

A day behind, but catching up! This little bird got a bold makeover with flowing blue lines, creamy shapes, and a bright orange background. I imagine this one painted on a wall in Kenya, bringing a big pop of color to the street!

I’m having fun experimenting with different styles throughout this challenge. Some days are detailed and dreamy, and others are all about simple shapes and playful patterns.

If you’re behind too, consider this your reminder to keep going. A day late still counts! 🎨🐦

🐦🎨 WE’RE HALFWAY THROUGH BIRDTOBER 2026! 🎉

There have already been OVER 5,000 POSTS under #birdtober2026! 🤯🐦

That is SO MUCH BIRD ART being created all over the world, and it makes my heart so happy!

Whether you’re following my official prompt list, making up your own, painting, drawing, sculpting, or experimenting with something completely new, I LOVE seeing all this creativity. The whole point of Birdtober is to make art, learn about birds, and have fun doing it!

🐦 FALLING BEHIND? DON’T GIVE UP!

We are only halfway through, and there is still plenty of time to jump back in! Here are a few tips:

🎨 Make a few quick sketches! Not every bird needs to be a masterpiece. Some of my favorite pieces are the ones I didn’t overthink.

🐦 Skip ahead to today’s bird! You can always go back and catch up later.

⏰ Set a timer for 15–20 minutes. Sometimes giving yourself a time limit is the best way to get out of your own head.

🖌️ Try something different! Switch mediums, simplify your style, or make a tiny bird. This is supposed to be FUN!

🎁 DON’T FORGET YOUR FREE BIRDTOBER GOODIES!

If you complete all 31 birds by November 5, you’ll be able to sign up to receive a FREE Birdtober sticker and postcard! So don’t count yourself out if you’re a few birds behind!

👀 WANT TO SEE WHAT EVERYONE ELSE IS CREATING?

Head to my Instagram profile and click the TAGGED tab on the far right (I’ve included a photo showing where to find it!). You’ll see Birdtober artwork from artists who have been tagging me in their posts. It’s such a fun way to discover new artists, find inspiration, and support each other! It’s the way it used to be on the explore page!

Thank you to everyone who has participated, shared, commented, encouraged another artist, or simply followed along. I can’t believe how much this little bird challenge continues to grow! I’m having a hard time keeping up! 😅

Now tell me, how many birds have YOU finished so far? Are you all caught up, a little behind, or just jumping in? 👇🐦

Day 15 of #Birdtober2026! 🐦💚💙

Meet the Long-tailed Broadbill! That bright green body, yellow face, black cap, and those incredible blue tail feathers! 😍 It’s also giving Beatles haircut vibes 😆

These beautiful birds are found in parts of Asia, including southern China, where they live in forested mountain regions. I imagined this mural bringing a little piece of that lush forest into the middle of urban China.

I love the contrast of colorful wildlife against city buildings. Imagine walking down the street and seeing this giant bird flying across a wall! 💚

We are officially almost halfway through Birdtober! 🎨

For all 31 days, I’ll be creating bird mural mockups using a mix of Procreate, Canva, and image editing apps. My hope is that some of these concepts might actually turn into future murals.

Day 14 of Birdtober! 💙 A crown this fabulous deserves a whole wall.

Today’s bird is the Victoria crowned pigeon, paired with New Guinea impatiens. I imagined this mural in New Guinea, with those bright pink flowers framing that incredible lacy crest.

I had less time for this one, so I went with simpler shapes and outlines. It ended up reminding me a little of Art Nouveau.

October is always a little wild. You’d think I’d be better prepared for an art challenge that I host myself, but apparently not. 😂 Today’s post is coming in late, but I’m not behind yet! Calling that a win.

For all 31 days, I’ll be creating bird mural mockups using a mix of Procreate, Canva, and image editing apps. My hope is that some of these concepts might actually turn into future murals.

Anyone else making it through October one day at a time? 🙋‍♀️

🦚 Birdtober Day 13: Himalayan Monal 🇳🇵

Meet the Himalayan Monal, a stunning pheasant found in the Himalayan mountains, including Nepal! Its iridescent feathers are an absolute dream, and I would LOVE to paint one at this scale!

I imagined this mural tucked away on a charming street in Nepal, surrounded by colorful flowers and mountain views.

I paired this beauty with Himalayan blue poppies, which grow in the same region. 💙 I had never seen these flowers before. One of my favorite parts of Birdtober is researching birds and discovering the incredible flowers and plants that share their habitats. Every day I learn something new, and my list of things I want to paint keeps getting longer!

For all 31 days, I’ll be creating bird mural mockups using a mix of Procreate, Canva, and image editing apps. My hope is that some of these concepts might actually turn into future murals.

Day 12 of #Birdtober2026! 🦅🌵🌸

Today’s bird is the Sharp-shinned Hawk! These little raptors may be small, but they are fierce! They’re found throughout North America, including New Mexico, where I imagine this colorful mural coming to life.

I paired this hawk with some giant, colorful prickly pear cactus blooms! I LOVE painting prickly pear cactus, especially when I get to play with all those beautiful pinks, corals, and yellows! 🌸

I’m dreaming of this mural on a big adobe-style building somewhere in New Mexico. The turquoise background, desert flowers, and pink hawk make me so happy!

For all 31 days, I’ll be creating bird mural mockups using a mix of Procreate, Canva, and image editing apps. My hope is that some of these concepts might actually turn into future murals.

Birdtober Day 11/31: The Shoebill! 🩵🩷🦤

Isn’t this scene dreamy?! I am LOVING the pinks and blues in this one! Meet the shoebill, one of the most prehistoric-looking birds on the planet! These giant, slightly intimidating birds are found in the wetlands of East Africa, and yes, they really do look like dinosaurs!

I added a tilapia swimming below, which happens to be one of the fish shoebills eat! And of course, MORE protea flowers because apparently I can’t get enough of them. 😂🌸

For all 31 days, I’ll be creating bird mural mockups using a mix of Procreate, Canva, and image editing apps. My hope is that some of these concepts might actually turn into future murals.

Where in the world should I paint this one?! 🌍

Birdtober Day 10: Crimson Rosella! ❤️💙🦜

We’re officially about 1/3 of the way through Birdtober! Only 21 more birds to go!

Today’s bird is the Crimson Rosella, a gorgeous red and blue parrot native to Australia! 🇦🇺

I’ve been wanting to incorporate pomegranates into a mural lately, so I was excited to discover that they’re grown in Australia too! Fun fact: I remember painting pomegranates in my very first painting class, so this one feels like a little full-circle moment. ❤️

For all 31 days, I’ll be creating bird mural mockups using a mix of Procreate, Canva, and image editing apps. My hope is that some of these concepts might actually turn into future murals.

10 birds down, 21 to go! Which bird has been your favorite so far?
