I call this one the polka dot bird!

October 25: Red-and-yellow Barbet (Trachyphonus erythrocephalus)
Native to East Africa, the Red-and-yellow Barbet is found mainly in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia and Tanzania. It lives in dry savannas, open woodlands and thorny scrub, especially in areas with scattered trees, termite mounds and exposed earth.

❤️💛 It certainly lives up to its name, with a brilliant red-and-yellow head, spotted black-and-white plumage and flashes of blue and green!
🕳️ Instead of nesting in a tree, it often digs a tunnel into a termite mound or earthen bank, creating a sheltered chamber inside.
🍓 It has a varied diet and eats fruits, seeds and insects, sometimes searching for food on the ground.
🎵 Pairs often call together in lively duets, producing a rhythmic series of notes that helps them communicate and defend their territory.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Red-and-yellow Barbets are social birds and may live in small family groups, with older offspring sometimes helping to care for younger chicks.
🦜 Despite their dazzling colours, they spend plenty of time hopping and running on the ground —an unusual sight for such a brightly coloured bird!

Love nature.💚 Consume responsibly.🌺 Plant trees.🌳

The hoatzin is today's #birdtober. It's the national bird of Guyana, going by the name of Canje pheasant. Love the spiky feathers and red eye!

I am a day behind!
Day 23 of Birdtober is a Lesser Flamingo. The Lesser flamingo (Phoeniconaias minor) is the smallest and most numerous species of flamingo in the world, standing about 2.6 to 3 feet tall and weighing between 2.6 and 6 pounds #birdtober #birds #birdlovers #feathers #birdart

#birdtober2026 is hosted by @aholmesartstudio . #birdtober2026day24 is the Hoatzin. The hoatzin is notable for its chicks having primitive claws on two of their wing digits, similar to the fossil bird Archaeopteryx. It is unique among birds in possessing a digestive system that significantly supports the fermentation and the effective breakdown of plant matter, a trait more commonly known from ruminant mammals. This bird is also the national bird of Guyana, where the local name for this bird is Canje pheasant. #hoatzin #birds #manitobaartist

#birdtober2026 is hosted by @aholmesartstudio . #birdtober2026day23 is the Lesser Flamingo (Phoeniconaias minor) a species of flamingo occurring in sub-Saharan Africa and western India. The flamingo is one of my favourite birds for it’s odd pink beauty. #flamingo #birds #manitobaartist
