Drape a Wool Throw At the End Of Your Bed
‘As the temps cool, it’s nice to give your bed an extra layer,’ says designer Alexa Harris-Ralff, founder of AHR Designs. ‘When making the bed, I like to add a quilt or coverlet to a bed and then fold the duvet at the bottom for a layered look. If our clients only sleep with a duvet cover and insert, then oftentimes they will swap the insert for a heavier version for the cooler temps. A chunky throw blanket is also a nice addition in the fall.’

Black and white are a classic ALWAYS. We design homes that feel timeless and comfortably elegant for the families that live there. Our “tradition with a twist” Upper Northwest DC project is a perfect example of this.

Our client had an amazing collection of Princess Diana memorabilia that she wanted to find a place to showcase. She also had a very basic powder room that needed some AHR Designs love. Did we mention she LOVES the color turquoise?
What we created here was a delightful example of why we love what we do.

Warning -Executing a themed space well isn’t for the faint of heart.

I keep seeing everyone’s pics of their kids being moved into their dorms for the first time and I remember that feeling so specifically. It’s a special kind of melancholy- an equal parts “sadness & joyfilled” sandwich dressed with some angst and a sprinkle of excitement for what’s to come.
My own delightful kin left last week to go back to college and while I love my kids @wyatt_ralff @averyralff SO much I am choosing to focus on the things I enjoy while they are away.

Empty nest things I am choosing to celebrate:
1. A clean house
2. Reuniting all of your glassware to its appropriate cabinet
3. A reasonable number of baseball hats on the mudroom hooks
4. A foyer without shoes
5. Fluffed pillows
6. Leftovers
7. Towels off the floor
8. Empty jars, bottles, cans thrown away
9. Matched socks

This epic Summit NJ basement gut reno was render worthy as the design development unfolded. Our clients wanted to maximize the various zones for their active crew and needed our vision to bring it to life.
An amazing custom sectional was imagined with a pit-like ottoman that slides right in for family movie night.
The game table nook was designed with a custom bench for poker and game nights.
Everything was upholstered in fabrics that will hold up to our clients 3 teen boys who spend lots of time down here.

The walls are a showcase for the clients’ collection of amazing sports memorabilia.

Even though I’m an indoor cat this vaca reminded me why it’s important to get out into nature. I escaped the office with my people to Colorado this past week for an amazing adventure.

Few thoughts-
I only wish I liked skiing because this state is insanely beautiful in ways I never imagined.

I thought I was in good shape until I hiked with my family. I clearly need to amp up the cardio asap.

I can push past fear and survive. I won’t EVER kayak (duckie) on a rapid again but it was a good lesson in growth. Also a reminder of what it’s like to be fully underwater for the first time in about 25 yrs. This story will have legs for years to come.

@steveralff for the red rocks win. We somehow got VIP seating and were high fiving @mtjoyband. This blew this bucket list experience out of the park. Made it worth the hr plus rain /lightning delay. Super thankful for raincoats. Truly they work!

Our kids are really great sports. Up at 6am for red rocks yoga even though I know they’d rather be sleeping in.

I’m going to be super controversial here. I still like a pillow chop. A good pillow fill will naturally give you that sweet little divet. I was never into the aggressive rabbit ear look, just a subtle valley.

In the meantime- make sure your fills are 2 inches bigger than your covers. Don’t listen to retail sites who tell you a 20x20 pillow takes a 20x20 fill. It needs a 22x22 insert!
Etsy can be a great resource for pillow covers. Pick a down alt insert to avoid being poked by sharp feathers. The Company store has some good ones.
