It took me a few hours of sitting on my sofa and listening to Dolly Parton albums to get the feels and tears. And oddly, while I’m extremely saddened that we’ve lost this amazing woman, hearing her lovely melodic voice sing those heartfelt relatable lyrics, and remembering the amazing humanitarian ways she lived her life, put a smile and hope in my heart. She may be the only human that the whole world loves. May we all strive to be a little more like Ms @dollyparton. by @ahubermarie

I started ADHD group therapy this year. I ride the bus a lot. I love my little family. Getting paid to hang out with funny kiddos is pretty great. I may have found a new major to study while finishing my undergraduate degree.

Reading with Amy - Day 2
Notes taken and illustration drawn by @amymhuber_studio
from the book “Mutual Aid”
by @spade.dean

Slide1) photo of the cover of “Mutual Aid” by Dean Spade

Slide 2) Chapter 1 - Three Key Elements of Mutual Aid

ONE Mutual aid projects work to meet survival needs and build shared understanding about why people do not have what they need.

TWO Mutual aid projects mobilize people and build movements.

THREE Mutual projects are participatory, solving problems through collective action rather than waiting for saviors.

Slide 3) where we focus on key element ONE:
Meeting the survival needs and building a shared knowledge of why people do not have what they need.

This includes - exposing the reality that people do not have what they need and proposing that we can address this injustice together.

The most famous example in the U.S. : you got it! The Black Panther Party Survival Programs. 1960s and 1970s

Side 4) Example of Mutual Aid within the Black Panther Party:

The Free Breakfast Program -

Howdy! 👋 Amy Huber, here and I’m trying to learn more about Mutual Aid. This is my attempt to help others learn too. I don’t currently know that much, except that of course I love when people get together to help each other. However, as an elder millennial, capitalism was definitely ingrained into me. So I want to learn more. Feel free to join!

Slide 1: Note Taking - Come and learn about mutual aid with me. - I am not an expert - I was gifted a booked, written by @spade.dean and named Mutual Aid. - I am going to read it and take notes. - Feel free to follow along. - Let’s see what we can discover. 💙 Amy

Slide 3: Notes by Amy H
Part 1) What is Mutual Aid?
“Mutual aid is a collective coordination to meet each other’s needs…usually from an awareness that the systems in place are not going to meet them… those systems…have often created the crisis.”
EXAMPLES:
- People raising 💰 for workers on strike.
- Ride sharing for boycotts and protests.
- Coordinating letter writing to prisoners.
- Putting out 💧 at border crossings.

Slide 2: Example of Mutual Aid, an illustration of cars and protest signs, “Setting Up a Rideshare system…for boycotts and protests.

Slide 3: Example of Mutual Aid, an illustration showing letter writing to prisoners, “coordinating letter-writing to prisoners.”

Slide 4: Example of Mutual Aid, “putting drinking water 💧in the desert 🏜️ for migrants crossing the border…”, an illustration of 4 water bottles in the desert 🏜️ and 4 silhouettes of persons walking across the desert.

Slide 5: Real Life Example of Mutual Aid, Building public benches at bus stops where there are none.”
