Come see the premiere of “You are all so far away”, a new piece I wrote for this year’s musicON festival! It is on the 5pm concert today, October 4, at the Blanc! Also featuring many other premieres by friends and other nyc composers!! by @aidan.gold

Program Note for “You are all so far away”——Aidan Gold

We’re all so close, and I can’t move without bumping into one of you. I suppose that’s natural being crammed together in a big city like this. Looking back, maybe that’s what I hated the most about it, ironically. Everyone is only a half step away, so you can reach them at any time. Yay voice leading!
Now we’ve each moved a step apart – we made a third! We have a bit more room now to do our own thing, and it’s still pretty easy to cross a third. But now it’s a fourth. A fifth, then a sixth. The gulf is getting so wide. I keep crossing back and forth, but it’s harder each time. It sounds more and more awkward. It takes more effort, more money, more time.
I want to dissolve back to my half step, where we were all in the same place. Our instruments would melt into voices – our own distinct voices, yet somehow all so similar. These voices would echo in an empty room – but it’s not empty? There are so many people here. I hope they join me. They are all just so far away – can anyone actually hear me anymore?

This work will be premiered on October 4 at 5:00 PM at The Blanc in New York City. We warmly invite everyone who is interested to join us and celebrate with Aidan the premiere of this highly anticipated new work. by @aidan.gold

The fourth Contemporary Composers Concert will feature six works.

This concert brings together outstanding composers: an acclaimed French-Chinese composer active in Europe and winner of the Isang Yun International Composition Competition, along with five young American composers who have received either the ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Award or a BMI Composer Award, showcasing the diverse musical expressions and vibrant creative energy of a new generation of composers.

Six works featuring a diverse range of chamber music settings, including solo piano, solo guzheng, mixed chamber trios, a piano quartet, and a mixed chamber quintet.

The concert will take place at THE BLANC at 5:00 PM on October 4. Everyone interested is welcome to join us in person. Please scan the QR code to reserve your seat. by @aidan.gold

Today, we are delighted to introduce our featured guest composer, Aidan Gold.

Aidan was one of the five winners of the inaugural MusicON Composition Competition. His music is lively, playful, and full of character, and the musicians of the MusicON Ensemble are very excited to collaborate with Aidan once again!

Aidan Gold is a composer, conductor, percussionist, and educator. His work often focuses on musical games, improvisation, theatricality, and narrative/storytelling. He is fascinated with the idea of music as a social act – a game/ritual that we perform to allow us to communicate and connect with one another, defining, challenging, and expanding our individual and collective identities.

Aidan has a DMA in Composition at the Juilliard School. His music has been performed by the the Juilliard Orchestra, the JACK Quartet, the Aizuri Quartet and others, and has won awards including the Arthur Friedman and Palmer Dixon prizes.

Aidan is passionate about collaborating to create new kinds of performance. He is one of the founding members of AFK, a NYC contemporary chamber music collective that focuses on creating interactive musical experiences. Aidan is a composition/theory faculty at the Walden School and Opportunity Music Project. His other interests include origami and Hiking.

Doctor of Musical Arts.
I’ve been in school pretty much my whole life (13 years of college - 6 at UW, 2 at USC, and 5 at Juilliard), so being “done” still feels incredibly strange and surreal. But I suppose there’s no escaping the “real world” now (unless I decide to get another degree haha)

Over the past five years, I have met so many incredible artists and people both at Juilliard and throughout New York City, and I am so thankful that I get to hear and see their art and work with them in so many different ways.

Thank you to everyone in my doctoral year for being such a close and supportive community throughout all our classes, writing, and other adventures!

Thank you to the other members of @afkcontemporary for exploring crazy musical games and interactive performance with me!

Thank you so much to my parents and my brother Janick who flew out to NYC to see this commencement, and for supporting me throughout this very long journey!!

Thank you to the countless other people I’ve met here- composers, performers, interdisciplinary artists, and more- who continue to inspire me!! by @aidan.gold

What if the orchestra was a giant metronome that shifted in and out of sync with conductor improv? Find out at the Chelsea Symphony concert this Friday (May 15) at 8pm at DiMenna! by @aidan.gold

Some fun shenanigans getting ready for the Wednesdays at One chamber music concert next week! I wrote a new piano trio for the Juilliard Gena Raps prize called “A Step-by-Step Guide to Making Friends”, and it’s going to be premiered next week at Alice Tully Hall on Wednesday, March 25th, at 1pm!
So much fun working on it with the amazing @themidcenturymaude @ariperazacello and @baronfenwick !

This piece was written for the Walden School Faculty Commissioning Project and was performed by myself and three members of the Friction Quartet: Otis Harriel, Mitso Floor, and Doug Machiz. It's a musical guessing game with hints (like "hot and cold")! Full recording link is in bio! by @aidan.gold
