Last week's experiments with stoneware and terracotta with @aidencanaday, making things for birds and people.

It is always nice to spend a few days with Aiden because he is such a good person to go down music rabbit holes with and he doesn't get too cross if my car runs out of battery and we have to sit in the Tesco car park for hours, or if I draw willies on his pots.

COLOURFUL FLOWERS (2026)

Earthenware vase painted with underglaze colours and then three flower shapes cut out using sgraffito techniques, half dunked (bottom up!) in transparent glaze to show the change/difference in colours and textures.

Have you all been smoking this summer? It seems so!

Thanks to everyone who has used my ashtrays over the past few months in the Star garden. They’re (mostly) still there and in use - keep interacting with the art everyone!

Some have been stolen but that’s part of the fun I think! Thanks to the Star for having them in the garden through the summer - we’ll do a big ashtray sale on the last night of the garden later this year!

Each ashtray is a unique, hand built, coiled earthenware clay pot made to be a play on the traditional upside-down plant pot ashtrays seen in pub gardens up and down the country - they are decorated with bright underglazes, made up patterns and hand-marked sgraffito! Oh how nice to spend 2 days with @aidencanaday in the studio making terracotta experiments in preparation for Tiny Gods exhibition next year. Thanks for showing me how you work!

And also @humanres0urce who dropped in on the way back from buying a magic knitting machine.

Aiden and I made some proto fonts for martlets and other migrating birds, and a couple of caganers in honour of our joint Catalan roots (having resided in utero in Barcelona at exactly the same time)

Are you enjoying the World Cup? What about a World of Cups?

New cups / copas / tazas for your hand held drinking pleasure right here!

They are small but you don’t want to drink too much do you? These hand built slab works are fine for wine or coffee I’d say and you don’t want a big glass of either really!

Decorated vaguely in pairs with underglaze and sgraffito on white stoneware clay - there are roughly scattered ideas of people, human forms, plants and words among them!

Drink away in small, reasonable amounts and clink with friends or to a lost loved one in memory! Always hold the memories of people close!

Last slide shows some of my favourite hand-built mugs and cups from ceramic pals around the world - (L-R) Nicola Farrington, Ginny Sims, Alice Merida Richards, Cecilia Bicknell and Rose de Borman - check their work out and support their art!

New earthenware vase depicting a new mother breastfeeding her child alongside two plants and a flurry of patterned diamonds with different ideas etched in. All in blue underglaze, sgraffito and then vertically half glazed in transparent to see the difference quite starkly!

Aiden Canaday: House of Creativity Artist

Love The World Around You! By Aiden Cananday featured in the House of Creativity 2026.

Love The World Around You! was originally displayed as part of a joint exhibition alongside Shoshana Kessler at Fusion Arts’ Gloucester Green space in March 2023. Other recent exhibitions include ‘Life Vessels’ at the Horse Hospital, London (2024) and Life is Art is Life at Fusion Arts window galleries (2022).

Aiden is an associate lecturer in Fine Arts at Oxford Brookes University and also runs Divine Schism, who are one of the UK’s leading grassroots live music promoters. Aiden’s relationship with Fusion Arts began in 2011 when he started putting on exhibitions and live music nights in the original Princes Street location and he’s been making stuff happen in the music and arts community ever since.

Oh my, May is upon us!

We have 13 shows this month - 10 of them in Oxford and 3 in London!

Here’s the posters for 9 of the Oxford shows (1 of them is sold out) where you can still attend, buy an advanced ticket, rock up on the night (maybe) and fall in love with some new music and make some friends! A wonderful mix of interesting, alternative musical artists from all over the globe! Some are old friends and some will become new ones!

We love the music scene, we love the Oxford music scene, listening to new music being played in different venues and enjoying the rapport with everyone who attends - we have so many regulars coming to a lot of the shows and still at every show we meet new people who might be new to town, new to Divine Schism, new to it all and everyone is welcome!

DON’T GET LED ASHTRAY

Hello! I will be exhibiting a selection of purposefully built ceramic garden ashtrays at The Star from Sat 4th April - the best pub garden in Oxford reopens in early April and it just got more colourful - they have a lot of tables in the garden and I have made loads of ashtrays that can be used for stubbing out your cigarettes.

Please come along and enjoy this interactive, engaging art show - you can touch the work, you can use the work, you can buy the work, you can think about the people in your life who may make use of one of these ashtrays in their own garden or outside space.

They’ll be in situ from 12 noon on Sat 4th April and on show until the end of the month - I imagine many will get stolen but that’s part of the fun perhaps! You can also buy them - there’ll be a price list at the bar!

I have been trying to think of fun exhibition titles but at the same time didn’t want to glamourise smoking! You can also certainly enjoy these ashtrays without smoke - they are hand built, coiled earthenware clay pots made to be a play on the traditional upside-down plant pot ashtrays seen in pub gardens up and down the country - they are decorated with bright underglazes, made up patterns and hand-marked sgraffito!

DRONE BOMB ME

Trophy vii (2025) black and blue earthenware pot named after the song by ‘Drone Bomb Me’ by legendary singer of hope ANOHNI @anohni

This is the seventh and last of the trophies/jugs/vases I made last year and the only one without handles.

This has some smiling, evil people on it dropping bombs on women and children whilst grabbing and running off with their dollar bills! These are all in blue slip and then with the black slip figures we have two men physically fighting whilst children cower beneath them. Below these figures are abstract shapes depicting smashed objects broken by the reverberating fighting. What a world we live in!
