It feels absolutely insane that the new Deerhoof album is called Divine Schism. They’re a band I’ve loved ever since I first heard Dummy Discards a Heart well over 20 years ago, and have been responsible for some of my favourite music and some of my favourite live music memories (a 12 minute jam of Panda Panda Panda at the Cellar for one, wow). To have somehow impacted or influenced or inspired them in this way to have become a part of their music feels surreal, and humbling, and also such a huge honour that I can’t really put it into words.

Divine Schism isn’t even mine really, it’s Aiden, Cunning and Grillo who got it all going and made it what it is, I’ve just been a small part of the most recent chapter - but even so, i’m touched and proud beyond measure. Watch Aiden and I succumb to the weight of our massive egos now 😅

Yesterday was the 11th anniversary of my mother's passing. A substantial amount of time which has in some ways gone by in a blink of an eye. The old adage that time is a healer is true of sorts but in other ways it's made more difficult because they feel further away from you. You miss them when life and family milestones are made and sometimes feel they are reduced to mere dreams and distant memories.

She was a very talented musician, artist, linguist and teacher. An amazing mother who cared a lot about the people around her and the people of the world, sometimes to a fault. I'd like to think I'm still doing her proud, as are the rest of my wider, lovely family. She was a great friend to my brother Aiden and I and instilled in us a love of life, laughter, music and art. I miss her sense of humour and the old times playing music together. She no doubt inspired a lot of people without realising it and that gentle inspiration we still carry with us today.

She'd love the fact that friends old and new were still listening to her music, keeping her spirit alive, so please feel free to follow the links below and enjoy :)
