We visited the Baths of Caracalla 🏛️✨

Imagine coming to the baths in ancient Rome, not just to get clean, but to spend the day.

Built under Emperor Caracalla and completed around 216 CE, these were among the largest public bath complexes in the Roman world. And “baths” seriously undersells what this place was. There were enormous vaulted halls, marble floors, colossal sculptures, gardens, libraries, exercise spaces, and pools where thousands of people could gather, socialize (and sometimes discuss business), exercise, read and relax.

The scale is absolutely wild. Even in ruins, you can get a sense of just how monumental Roman architecture could be.
And those spectacular marble sculptures? Many were later excavated here and are now scattered across museums around the world, including some of the most famous Roman sculptures in the Farnese collection.

One of my favorite things about visiting ancient sites in Rome is realizing that these weren’t simply “ruins.” They were once busy, social spaces filled with people, conversation, politics, gossip, art, and everyday life.

Rome is basically one giant art-history classroom, and I’m here for it. 💜

Follow along for more art, history, travel, and stories about the artists and people who don’t always get the spotlight.

Food week recap! 🍽️

This past week, all of our program’s cultural activities revolved around trying various local foods! As already mentioned, we kicked off the week with a cooking class at Chefactory Cooking Academy. On Tuesday, we had Gusta dinner in Piazza Santo Spirito where we enjoyed a 3 course meal that consisted of a soufflé antipasto, meatballs and spinach for the main course, and vanilla gelato for dessert! On Wednesday, we got some more authentic gelato at Sbrino, and then ended the week with a day trip to Chianti (more to come)! 🍨🍇🧀

We took a day trip to #Tivoli ⛲️

A day in Tivoli exploring two remarkable villas from very different eras 🇮🇹✨

Hadrian’s Villa (Villa Adriana), built by Roman Emperor Hadrian around AD 120–130, was an enormous imperial retreat (I mean a really sprawling campus more than a villa) featuring palaces, gardens, pools, temples, libraries, and theaters. 🎭

Nearly 1,400 years later, Villa d’Este was built in the 16th century, beginning in 1550, for Cardinal Ippolito II d’Este, who had failed to become pope despite his position as son of a pope. Its magnificent Renaissance gardens are famous for their hundreds of fountains, terraces, and the ingenious water features meant to wow his fellow nobles. All of these fountains are designed with no pumps, just the genius of human engineering and gravity. 💧

A great reminder that even if you don’t achieve the goals you originally set, you can definitely leave your mark on the world. ⛲️

500+ years later, we continue to be awed. ✨

Two extraordinary places, separated by centuries, but each offering a glimpse into Italy’s fascinating history. 🏛️🌿💦

Our students introduction to Rome continues. ✨

Had the morning off from teaching, so I had a leisurely breakfast and wrote in my journal at a lil cafe in Villa Borghese park. I had some work to do back at the apartment, lunch, thought about opening my book 😂 then headed back out. The students had a walking tour of the major monuments of the historic core of Rome today. It as a great introduction to the city for them. I forget how incredible these buildings and sculptures are. The iron entire city really is a museum. After work, I had a spritz with a friend, grabbed a quick dinner, and that’s a wrap!
