✨ Stepping into the splendor of Palazzo Doria Pamphilj! 🎨

Our Rome study abroad students explored one of the city’s most extraordinary private art collections, housed in a magnificent palace still owned by the Doria Pamphilj family.

From the opulent interiors and gilded ceilings to masterpieces by Caravaggio, Fontana, Rembrandt, Reni, Tiziano, Velázquez, and many other great artists, every room offered a new opportunity to connect the art and history we’ve been studying with the world around us.

One of the highlights? For me, one of the biggest highlights was seeing work by Tiziano! I never tire of his colors and the sensual quality of his paintings. There’s something special about standing in front of a painting you’ve studied and being able to experience its color, brushwork, and presence in person. Reproductions simply can’t capture the same magic. 💜

And of course, Caravaggio’s dramatic use of light and shadow reminds us why his work revolutionized Baroque painting. I also always appreciate Rembrandt’s sensitivity. I could go on and on but 20 slides and a bunch of paragraphs will never suffice!

We also really appreciated this calm, quiet, and uncrowded viewing experience. Such a pleasure to savor the art slowly! It’s good for students to see this salon-style hang too, which is a major contrast to the eye-level, even spacing of contemporary museums of art history. So much educational value at every turn!

In Rome, the classroom is everywhere — sometimes behind the doors of a centuries-old palace. 💜

Beneath Rome lies another world. 🕯️

We descended into the Catacombs of San Callisto, one of the most important burial sites of early Christianity, dating back to the 2nd century CE.

Miles of underground galleries hold thousands of tombs, offering a glimpse into how early Christians honored their dead, expressed their faith, and developed a visual language that would shape the history of Western art.

From ancient symbols carved into stone to the quiet passageways beneath the modern city, this is a reminder that Rome’s history extends far beyond its magnificent monuments above ground.

✨ Art history isn’t always found in museums. Sometimes, it’s hidden beneath our feet.

Siena and San Gimignano day trip! 🌟

Last Saturday, students took a day trip to the beautiful Tuscan towns of Siena and San Gimignano, which was included in the program. 🏰🐎

In Siena, students participated in a guided walking tour of the city, including the Basilica Cateriniana di San Domenico. The rest of the time was free to explore and grab a bite to eat! ⛪️

Then, in San Gimignano, students got to taste gelato from Gelateria Dondoli, which was ranked the top gelato in the world in 2024! This was followed by some time to walk around and take in the views. 🍨
