eating disorder awareness week. this one feels different for me—heavier. i recently had two friends from treatment pass away. there was a point in time i would’ve rather died than eaten food. i’m unimaginably glad death wasn’t the choice i made. when you’re in it, eating disorders consume all that you are & all you imagined your life to be. for a period of time, i lost all of me, & the journey back to myself was the most important one i could ever take. for as long as i can remember, i always felt like too much & wanted to take up less space; now i believe my muchness is the reason i’m alive. i’m grateful for every hospital bed, ensure plus, telemetry monitor, orthostatic vital sign check, 5AM blood draw, treatment stay, therapy session, journal entry, pound gained, & tear cried to get here. i started recovery 6 years ago & have been working in ED treatment nearly 3, & i intend to spend the rest of my existence fighting for other people’s lives & a world where everybody & every body feels safe & loved. here are some pics of little ailis before they felt like they needed to shrink their muchness—i wish they could see me & my life now with all of its beauty, queerness, silliness, selfness, authenticity, community, & joy. the world’s better with you here. please keep sticking around & taking up the space you deserve. recovery is so worth it, all the time everyday forever <3
