POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
When I first started coaching, I was one of the only female coaches in the space. Trying to start off coaching in a sport that was dominated by male coaches was never easy. Not for one moment.

I got told no more times than I can count. I was told I wasn’t good enough, I didn’t know what I was doing, and that I would NEVER compare to the men who coached in our sport. That women just didn’t have what it took. I wasn’t tough enough. I was too emotional. I should just be a cheerleader.

When I got my first athlete on to a Senior World Team in 2015, it was just unheard of to have a female (gasp!) there coaching. That was the start of many years where I was ridiculed, left out, talked about, was told I would ruin athlete’s careers, and I just had to work so much harder to earn respect. You would think I was marked by a Scarlet Letter!

A couple wonderful women asked me this weekend if I had advice for them as a female coach trying to make a name for themselves.

This is what I said:
Don’t take no for an answer.
Be confident and believe in yourself always.
Always be learning.
Never ever look at yourself as a ā€œfemaleā€ coach, or try to be the best ā€œfemaleā€ coach. Put your head down and work hard to be the very best COACH.
Your work and your actions are louder than anything you can ever say about yourself.
Never be backed into a corner.
DO NOT GIVE UP.

I like to think that I broke down a lot of walls, and I hope that the things that I have done in this sport, along with @ursula_garza_papandrea before me, has proven to you that it can be done.

Seeing more and more female coaches at competitions fills me with pride.

I never set out to be the best female coach. I have worked to be the best coach. I will continue to work to be the best coach.

I only hope that I can inspire the next generation, especially my athletes, to carry on my legacy someday. by @aimeeanayaeverett

I started Weightlifting in 1995 when I was 18 years old, and I will be 49 in a month. Almost a third of my life I have had a barbell in my hands.

I have devoted 30 years to this sport I love, as an athlete and a coach.

Every single day my body and mind allows me to lift is a GIFT.

I am so grateful 🄹

I don’t want to go into all the ways commenting on someone’s body can be so hurtful and harmful.

People can be so mean and cruel, and I want to share my thoughts-

I will say that my body as it is right now, as I’m approaching 50 years old, is a result of being truly and undeniably happy, having self love and acceptance of who I am, being confident and not starving myself in order to fit in to some societal standards of what a woman should look like!!
Most importantly, I have a really strong handle on my mental health for the first time in many years. Oh, and let’s not forget perimenopause…

I am ā€œchunkierā€ than when I was younger! Yet my body shows up for me every day in so many ways. And the truth is, I’m getting older. Things start to sag, my stomach, the ā€œflappy partā€ under my arms, even my face! And oh goodness, what about my chins??

But I’ve already been young and naturally thin, there were many times in my 20s and 30s that I was ā€œthinā€ by eating in a really unhealthy way because I cared too much what people thought of me based on my body, and/or society pressures.

I’ve had many many years with a wrinkle-less face, and a flat stomach. I have made the decision that I don’t WANT to go backwards.

This is my choice. Just as some people choose to do Botox or fillers, weight loss medications, or other procedures. Everyone has the right to choose what makes THEM feel happy and confident- and nobody should feel shame for how they choose to age, or what their bodies look like.

I am trying to age gracefully over here, and embrace getting older and this stage of life. I take care of myself mentally and physically, and I simply don’t want to reverse my aging or look like I did when I was 30. I want to look how I’m supposed to look at 48!

I’ve been the hottest version of myself at every age, including this age. And I truly don’t give a shit what anyone thinks!

Anyway, I feel speaking the truth, being real and honest, and being a STRONG WOMAN, is what makes me a role model, not how my body looks. And I would hope nobody is judging my coaching based on my body…

X-
Aimee

WARMING UP!!

Look, I may not look (or act) a day over 35, and i still got that style and glow, BUT I am quickly approaching the age of 50. And my body really feels it some days!

Lately I have been seeing so many people skip warming up with a barbell or technical weights. They just load up their first working set and get to work. I don’t know if your knees and back are bionic, or you have some Wolverine type recovery. Or maybe you’re just not yet over the age of 40! And I get it… I used to be you. In fact, like even two years ago…but i tell you what- my knees and my hips and my back (and now my shoulders) can’t take it anymore!

Regardless of age, y’all should be warming up! I know if you’ve been around for a while you have heard me say no less than 10,000 times, skipping through your warm-ups is doing you an enormous disservice. You go from barbell to working set hundreds of times a month !!! Why are you not being intentional and spending time there?

I often program primers for my athletes—some sort of complex to get their body PRIMED for the movement they’re doing that day. It’s right there in the word guys… PRIMER! I know some (most) people skip it, but I think warming up with the barbell, doing some complexes or primers with a technical weight, is SO HECKIN valuable to your movement and your mind in getting you prepared for your workout.

For myself, I definitely change it up based on how my body is feeling on any given day, for example, today I paid extra attention to warming up my shoulders and overhead position, since I did not go overhead for 6 weeks.

If you are going to tell me ā€˜I don’t have time to warm up’, ā€˜I don’t have time to do a primer’, ā€˜I don’t have time for that’… in the wise words of No Mercy Morris, if you don’t have time to warm up, you don’t have time to train.

Nobody is too good to grab a barbell and spend 5 to 10 extra minutes warming up your movement.

ESPECIALLY if you are an old lady like me!

Save what I did today, which took me about 10 minutes total, and see if it helps you feel better next time you do clean & jerks. If you think this is helpful, I will even post many many more war by @aimeeanayaeverett

A few weeks ago I had a HOEDOWN to say goodbye to my 40s and hello to my 50s 🤠

I turn 50 in January, but I really wanted a summer party… a hoedown in the snow doesn’t sound as appealing or as fun. So I decided to plan an early birthday party!

So I, along with some of the people I love most in the world, put on our best boots and had ourselves a really good time.

I gave a speech to let everyone there know what they meant to me, and how they made my life better. We all laughed and we cried, and we laughed some more. And we ate a lot of yummy food and devoured a dessert table I spent 9 MONTHS planning around @dollyparton ā€˜s butterfly cake she posted for her birthday in January (also a January birthday!). And I am so glad I put such attention in to my beautiful dessert table with @dreamindesserts , because i felt like i was able to honor her.

I am so excited for Part 2 of my story, titled- She is Living Happily Ever After.

…and while I officially don’t turn 50 until January 11th, this last year of my 40s has been an incredible year, and I’m the happiest I’ve ever been.

What a gift it is to have so many people in my life to love and to be loved by.

YEEHAW!!
