✨To the Bursary and Beyond!🌠 📖Read about 2023 Veronica Dunne Bursary recipient Aimee Kearney's experience of the Bursary competition and what she has been up to since! “Winning this bursary at such a pivotal moment in my education meant that I could continue to study and expand my musical horizons in Ireland and internationally. The money and support allowed me to improve my language skills, visit teachers and coaches in Ireland and abroad, and attend regular vocal physio therapy to keep my voice in good shape. I was therefore vocally ready and financially able to audition for the Dutch National Opera Academy, whereby I studied a masters in opera performance from 2024-2026. At the time of the awards, I had recently graduated from my undergrad at the RIAM, and was not fully sure what the next steps for me would be. So to receive such concrete support, feedback and encouragement from an esteemed jury and organisation whilst at this crossroads was invaluable to me, and indeed set me on the path I am on now. Since winning the bursary, I have performed with companies such as The Blackwater Valley Opera Festival, Nederlands Reisopera and Grote Zangers, and in major theatres and concert halls including Wigmore Hall, National Concert Hall and Het Concertgebouw. Finally getting around to posting a little snippet from our performance of @bpwenzmusic’s opera Nighttown, performed in February 2026 with @dutch_national_opera_academy. This is the prologue, sung by Molly Bloom. In this retelling of James Joyce’s timeless novel Ulysses, the story unfolds with Molly as the central character and voice. I never post videos of me singing, mainly because I’m too much of a perfectionist and will always find moments I think I could’ve done better. But, performing this role, conducted and composed by my dear friend Benji, with direction by @robertchevara, was the most important and rewarding project for me at the DNOA. And just like that, my time at the @dutch_national_opera_academy has come to a close! What an amazing journey it has been, and a real pleasure to finish it out performing the Vixen in Janàček’s ‘Cunning Little Vixen’. A huge thank you to every single person who has encouraged, supported, taught, nurtured and helped me in my journey. I wouldn’t be here without you. To my parents who have come to every performance, to my teachers past and present, to Hanneke, Maddalena and Paul, to my wonderful friends within and outside the DNOA, and to my beautiful girlfriend Maura: thank you. To Mathilde, Roman, Milan, Salvador and Pavel, my fellow classmates of 2026; I will miss you all so much, thank you for dazzling the stage with your talent, generosity, humour and warmth. I have loved every minute of our studies together. Happy #Bloomsday! It’s my pride to release this trailer from the European premiere of my opera, NIGHTTOWN: Robert Chevara’s blazing, techno-tragic production of the piece, performed with passion and pizzazz by the Dutch National Opera Academy (clarionly helmed by Paul McNamara & Maddalena Deichmann). The opera is a refraction of Joyce’s Ulysses through the eyes of women & nonbinary characters still finding their voices in this story (and The Odyssey, deeper down), and will be available in full for streaming in the coming months :-) For the moment, I invite you to take in the electric performances and emotional fathoms of these singers & instrumentalists (of the Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag) in the snapshot below; they gave this piece the priceless gift of immense artistry in tandem with equally vivid, inspired, and empowered humanity. Looking back on our wonderful production of Don Giovanni at @b_v_o_f and reading some of the nice reviews that came in! 🤩 It was a joy to make my debut as Zerlina in this festival, surrounded by wonderful colleagues and friends. A very special thanks to @dieterkaegi and @conleth13 for entrusting me with this role, to @tomcreed1980 and @peterwhelanpp for bringing the story and music to life, and to @dominic.veilleux for being a stellar stage husband. Performing in this festival felt like a full circle moment, as Zerlina’s arias were some of the first I worked on in my undergrad many years ago. To perform this role in a festival that has supported me greatly in my artistic development is something I will remember for a long time.
