Synthetic shadows and twisted mirrors: co-improvising with machines

NOTAM
Myrens verksted 3A, Oslo
6.10.2026
Doors 18:30
Concert 19:00

In this concert at NOTAM, we explore improvisation with artificial musical agents. An artificial musical agent is a computer program that listens to a musician’s live sound, and responds by controlling a sound synthesizer. The concert consists of four sessions in which solo musicians co-improvise with live computational musical agents they trained using selected recordings of their own performances.

The concert presents computer music system SCSCI (synthesizer control system for co-improvisation) for the first time in a public performance.

Performances:
@aandrew_andre_ + SCSCI and chaotic synthesis
@eleperalesandreu + SCSCI and granular synthesis
@petter.asbjornsen + SCSCI and FM synthesis
@stefanos_skialivas - Optical scores
@vincenzo_madaghiele + MAAL and synthesizers

Ars Electronica Festival 2026: Contribution from the Centre for AI and Creativity MishMash, Norway.

What forms of Artistic Intelligence become possible when artists, institutions, scientists and technologists organise around shared needs rather than disciplinary boundaries? How can AI support—not determine—those new collaborations? How do we build alternative infrastructures? This embedding event stages the question as an exchange: participants set down what they need, have built, and refuse with AI, cluster where their answers meet and trade concrete offers and requests into a shared ledger.

Wed 9. Sep 2026
12:30–14:30
Ursulinenhof Linz, Gewölbesaal
OK QUARTER

Language: EN
Max. Participants: 20
Info:
Registration needed. Target group: artists, institutions, scholars and technologists who are struggling with how to relate to Gen AI. All participants should bring one idea of something they need (conceptually, infrastructurally), and one idea of something they can contribute (conceptually, infrastructurally).

“Interdisciplinary Research on AI in Cultural and Creative Ecosystems”

Monday, September 14, from 10:00 a.m. CET at the Theater and Opera Hall Kilden (Sjølystveien 2, Kristiansand, Norway).

The MishMash Center for AI and Creativity, one of six Norwegian AI centers, combines three approaches: it creates AI-based systems, tools, and artworks; exploresAI in relation to creativity and learning; and reflectson the impacts of AI.

The MishMash opening conference showcases frameworks and examples based on the center’s three approaches. It features discussions among researchers from diverse backgrounds, from the perspectives of machines, humans, and society.

On April 8th, we celebrated the public launch of the MishMash Centre for AI and Creativity in Oslo. A national centre of excellence in Norway, MishMash is a globally minded networked consortium of researchers, artists and technologists with manifold partnerships and collaborations across the globe with aims to make groundbreaking contributions to the field. We had an introductory speech by the centre director Alexander Refsum Jensenius, and congratulatory speeches from the Minister of Research and Higher Education Sigrun Aasland and UiO Rektor Ragnhild Hennum. The evening showcased critical discourses and innovative artworks born within the extended family of MishMash.

Details of the proceedings and a video recording can be found on the MishMash website: https://mishmash.no/events/aulaen2026/ by @aimishmash
