The Artificial Extinction Archives project examines how algorithmic and machine-learning–based creative practices can offer new modes for narrating, and mourning, species extinction in the Anthropocene. The AEA is a new media artwork wherein a TensorFlow audio model has been trained to recognize the audio vocalizations of fifteen extinct or likely extinct bird species. Computational media can make perceptible the haunting presence of lost species by staging encounters with fragmented translations of these vocalizations. The AEA produces partial, poetic textual apparitions when contemporary environmental sounds partially resemble archived recordings. This intentional incompleteness highlights the unnarratability of extinction, which is a vast, multispecies, multi-scalar process, and aligns the work with post-classical narratology, where narrative becomes fragmented and cognitively co-created by readers. In the article about this work published in the Open Library of Humanities Journal, I draw on extinction studies, material ecocriticism, and computational narratology, to argue that fragmented, combinatory, algorithmic narrative and poetry forms can reflect the discontinuities and absences of ecological loss.

In my latest series of works, I'm interested in how we can create (semi)intelligent systems that are inspired by the perceptions or communication methods of other species, rather than focusing on creating AI systems that mimic or replace humans. What sorts of outputs and forms of creativity could come from such systems? The next example of this is my new work and first real foray into software design: Thigmotropism. A browser-based environment that uses biomimicry (translating biological processes into making processes) to let images grow through plant-inspired movement and interaction. Its title refers to plants’ directional responses to physical contact, such as a tendril coiling around a support. The software has learnt aspects of how plants move and respond to their surroundings and applies this to inages *you* upload. Its movement model draws on 1) a plant trajectory dataset by Simonetti (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.14288939) reconstructed from stereovision cameras, which records the looping movements, or circumnutations, of a pea plant through three-dimensional coordinates reconstructed by two observers. Functional principal component analysis identifies five principal patterns of variation, which my software recombines to generate new movement paths. Separate training fits this model to 84 potential tendril outcomes, estimating the relationship between tendril length, support diameter and attachment. 2) 17 annotated curl shapes trained from CC licenced images provide further training on how curls will shape. What the system has learnt is a limited statistical repertoire of movement, shape and contact relationships thqt plants use to engage with their surroundings.

CreaTeMe Lab Opening av Kraftverk // A space built to bring sound, technology and creativity together. The CreaTeME lab is a space for immersive sound which is unique in the world because it makes the highest quality technology accessible as a learning environment. It is a major milestone in achieving CreaTeME’s goal of making Kristiansand an international hub for innovative, inclusive, and responsible use of technology in higher music education. The opening centres on The Logos, a sound installation by Andrew Melchior, presented together with Thomas Lund of Genelec. This sound installation was developed for a cathedral in the 2026 European Capital of Culture and has been specially adapted for the CreaTeME lab. 🤳 @aprilsonsteby

Thankyou Norway! Just finished a workshop for @alexmurrayleslie's students (@chicksonspeed) at the Trondheim Academy of Fine Arts @kit_ntnu. Fun it was! As I was rushing to the bus and we both looked more "street" than "stage", I quickly improved our appearance with ChatGPT Image 2.5 - I wonder how many ai-beautified images I have seen on insta without noticing already? I put the original vs. the edit in this post for you to compare: a hybrid prompt-edited PR image vs. a documentary photo. Monday I enjoyed visiting the @mishmash.no Opening Conference in Kristiansand! MISHMASH feels genuinely unique: artists, scientists, technologists and researchers coming together not just to ask what AI can do, but what it is doing to creativity, culture and society. We urgently need spaces like this, where making, experimenting and critical reflection happen side by side. AI is changing the conditions of creativity, and understanding that transformation needs many disciplines, not just tech. Thanks for the inspiring conversations and the beautiful mishmash of perspectives! 🖤 #aitheory #artacademy #aiartist #contemporaryartist #mishmashconference

Around 300 researchers, artists, creatives and partners gathered in Kristiansand for the MishMash Opening Conference. Across two days, we explored how AI is reshaping creativity, culture and society, through research, artistic work, conversations and new connections across disciplines and borders. A strong start for MishMash, and for a community that is only beginning to grow. Thank you to everyone who joined us in Kristiansand.
