In honor of 50 years of hip-hop - here’s that time I grabbed the mic in Amsterdam 🙂 #whatsmyname #hiphop50 #loveofmylife #AMYG

Some years ago, in Amsterdam working on a music project, I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw that my favorites, Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek had a show while I was there! Of course I was front and center….. Apparently there were some issues with the sound that night, so I convinced the host to #passmethemic😎 by @aimsmusicnyc

I was teaching music in Milwaukee at the time, September 11th was the day after a professional development day for all of the music educators in the district, where ironically, a whole segment of the day had been dedicated to patriotic songs, and the importance of teaching them to our students. We watched the horrors together that day and wanted to make our own tribute, to write and sing our own words to heal. The community supported us as a recording studio offered time and musicians, many of my fellow educators that I had seen earlier that week, came to play on the song. At a time when the country desperately wanted to help, many Americans donated blood, but didn’t know what else to do, we sold the CDs of our song and donated the proceeds to the Families for Freedom fund, and felt that we had made a difference. We wanted to highlight how the tragedy brought us together as Americans, in hopes that it might inspire an end to divisive ideologies.

Please join me in congratulating this young student of mine, he is an Overall Vocal Winner in the @youngmaestrocompetition and will be performing at Lincoln Center this weekend! It’s interesting to me in many years of teaching how and why and when there are surges of interest in particular songs amongst students of mine, and fitting I think in our current times that the song A Million Dreams is still as beautiful and poignant as ever, especially sung by this guy. I could not be more proud! Enjoy these clips from our Steinway recital earlier this year, and building and learning the arrangement last fall. Hard work truly pays off! And you will see even more progress and a delightful performance on the competition’s YouTube channel after the event!

On a coooooold winter Sunday last month, my students performed Ode to Joy, all at the same time, on the gorgeous pianos on the Steinway showroom floor. Accompanied by Eliano Braz on violin and Melvin Greenwich on cello and the sun shining brightly through the windows, it was a lovely intermission to our annual recital! Please enjoy!

No better way to celebrate spring than by sharing music and making friends at Inspir!☀️🎶

We had students as young as 4 years old performing, and were thrilled to welcome special guest Melvin Greenwich, a professional cellist and performer, who joined us on Ode to Joy, Dreams and Let It Be.
We were also honored by the presence of Inspir resident Jerry Lindenstraus, a Holocaust survivor, making this month’s visit especially meaningful.

Musicians: 12 students— 7 from Ramaz, 1 from Collegiate, 1 from Frank McCourt, and 3 students of @aimsmusicnyc joined us as well
Grades: Preschool through 11th
Instruments: Piano, violin, cello, and voice 🎹🎻🎤

Memorable Moments: Everyone singing along to Let It Be, hearing original works by young composers, and the beautiful conversations that unfolded between students and residents.
Students were especially inspired by meeting residents who were published children’s book authors, psychologists, and talented visual artists, and learning about their lives. ✨

Thank you to everyone who joined us and made this visit so special.

Wrapping up 2024 with the most heartwarming moments from our December Winter Holiday Cheer event at Inspir! It was a joy to spread the magic of music to such a wonderful community and see the residents light up with smiles, tapping feet, and heartfelt applause. A special thank you to everyone who joined us in celebrating the season with the power of music—it’s moments like these that remind us how music connects us all. Here’s to many more events that bring joy, laughter, and melody into people’s lives. Wishing everyone a beautiful start to 2025! 🎶✨❄️

Thank you @morriscohen_ for the post! 🤗
