Memories from Amnesty International Nigeria’s Write for Rights Campaign, Kano, held at Northwest University, Kano. ⚖️🖤🤍

It was honestly such an insightful and fun experience. 😇🎉🎊

One of the highlights for me was the letters we wrote to Marwa and the President. That alone showed us how we can reach out to people and help them demand their rights, even without being physically present in their jurisdiction.

This campaign demonstrated that our voices and contributions matter and that they can make a difference in the lives of victims whose rights have been violated. Our simple letters can bring a smile to a victim’s face, give them hope, and even help reunite families. ❤️🥺

A special thank you to Amnesty International Nigeria for this wonderful opportunity to learn more about human rights and for organising such an engaging and memorable event. 🎉🎊

Amnesty International strongly condemns the increasing and unlawful clampdown on freedom of expression, as critics of Kano state government and the governor Mr. Abba Kabir Yusuf face arbitrary arrests, unlawful detention, threats, intimidation and harrassment solely for exercising the right to freedom of expression.

In almost all cases, the victims of this pattern of abuse of power were either arrested or ‘invited’ particularly by security agencies. Some were hurriedly put through sham trials based on bogus charges and sentenced hurriedly. Supporters of opposition political parties are particularly bizarrely targeted for their social media posts. This rising tide of repression prevailing in Kano is increasingly creating a toxic climate of fear and endangering people’s right to freedom of expression.

The case of Abba Ibrahim Kofar Nasarawa Aiha K Nass is deeply worrying as he has remained in detention since August. Also still in arbitrary detention is: Alhaji Murtala Muhammad Dawanau simply for a comment on a Facebook post. Fatima Dayyabu was arbitrarily arrested, arraigned and fined for criticism. Other victims of this abuse of power are: Maryam Usman (Golden Queen) Muhammad Ahmad, Hafsat Muhammad Sauwama Kauwama, Khadija Garba Kadnass, Ismail Hassan Hussain Lajin Dala, and Isa Zanna Isa. Zaidu Magaji was subjected to outrageous threats and intimidation.

These arrests are indicative of the constant harassment of opposition politicians and their supporters, and severe stifling of freedom of expression in Kano state.

Security agencies are increasingly being used to harrass and intimidate persons who criticize the governor. It is perfectly within the right of the people to criticize the President or a governor. No one is above criticism no —matter his status. Arresting critics is unacceptable in a free society.

The right to freedom of expression of young Nigerians is under attack. It is unacceptable that youth are facing the risk of arrests and detention simply for expressing critical opinions online. The government of Kano state and security agencies must urgently respect people’s rights to freedom of expression and association. taken in Kano, Nigeria by @ainigeria

Nigeria: Mitigating Civilian Harm During Military Air Operations

Amnesty International Nigeria held an engagement with the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) during a visit on 15 September 2026. The main focus of the conversations is the protection of civilians during military air operations.

On behalf of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, the Chief of Civil-Military Relations, Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet, noted that the Nigerian Air Force recognises civil society organisations as stakeholders in promoting accountability, transparency and adherence to international best practices.

The conversation also focused on investigations into past and recent military air operations that affected civilians: remedies and justice for families of victims.

The Nigerian Air Force affirmed its commitment to operational and training frameworks that place priority on the protection of civilians. taken in Nigerian Air Force Headquarters by @ainigeria

Minna: Death of over 37 Youth In Detention Must Be Investigated

The Nigerian authorities must immediately set up an independent investigation of today’s death of over 37 youth — including minors — in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna Niger state. The victims were arrested on September 15 and 16, 2026 at mining sites located at M.I. Wushishi/Lukoto axis of Minna. This loss of lives cannot go unanswered.

Government must promptly, thoroughly, independently, impartially, transparently, and effectively, investigate how detention for one to two days descended into a disaster that killed minors. Those who are found to be behind this tragedy must not merely receive internal or administrative sanctions. They must face the full scale of justice. taken in Mınna, Nıger State by @ainigeria

Nigeria: Unlawfully Police Declares Radio Presenter Wanted

Amnesty International strongly condemns the unlawful and outrageous invasion of JKD TV Hamada Radio Network Millennium City Kaduna by a contingent of heavily armed police. Both the General Manager Charles Abah and a security guard were arbitrarily arrested during the raid.

Police said that they had instructions to arrest journalist Zainab Salihu Yabagi, regarding a video explainer produced by JKD Radio & Television on Mr. Ibrahim Kabir Masari, Special Adviser to the President on Political Affairs. Kaduna state police command had already declared Zainab Yabagi wanted.

Government of Nigeria is increasingly making it difficult for the media report on issues of public interest without fear of reprisals. Attacking JKD Radio/Television is part of a wider pattern of attempts to create climate of fear across newsrooms in Nigeria and to make it harder for journalists to do their job.

The targeting independent media is solely aimed at depriving the people of the opportunity to receive fair and objective reporting of issues affecting their lives. No government official — no matter his status is above scrutiny and criticism in the interest of the public. An attack on the media is an attack on freedom. taken in Millennium City by @ainigeria
